I totally loved the idea of Devil's Roar concept but I was really curious about how an actual part of the map being icy/frost would look like in-game!
We had many ice related stuff during event such as accessories, weapons and boat set, why not a region of the map with icebergs or stuff like these?
I would admit that we have the winter event but I really would admire a region like this (in the north for example), with frozen squeletons, snowstorm or stuff like that?
I have no idea if it's a good idea at all and if it doesn't, I really apologize but I felt to share it so bad
Icy lands?
This common suggestion being polarizing is one of the great mysteries to me about the social side of the sot community.
To me it makes perfect sense in a fantasy game like this. In fantasy it's not hard to explain things like this especially now with adventures and mysteries.
I'm indifferent on it existing but the idea itself makes sense to me.
I can just about guarantee that a well done ice area with some story to it is going to get significantly more attention from the casual crowd than a good chunk of what already gets fairly ignored on the map. Ice curse ole faithful would be fun as heck.
It would be screen shot popular and casual play popular.
I definitely don't want to see a map expansion unless we can get more than 6 ships per server. However, I could get behind a map alteration.
The Devil's Roar is a perfect candidate for some temporary changes to spice it up (or cool it off) once in a while. Make it a "Hell freezes over" situation and give the people the ice zone that they've been begging for. Make it something that can be triggered. Make it part of an adventure. Make it for a Season. Whatever length of time, just make it an alteration and not an addition.
No. Never. Because:
-
Ship Density is already too low, another area would make it worse.
-
Doesn't make sense lore-wise.
-
Would feel like it was glued on, like the DR. Half the reason the DR is useless is because it doesnt get included in the rest of the map and feels more like a bonus are off the side. Your adventures rarely take you through it, so an Ice Area would be devoid of activity.

@icedragon5491 Given that the Sea of Thieves is in the Caribbean an ice or arctic area doesn't rally make sense. Here are some tweets on the matter.
I really want this, but there are some issues that need to be resolved first... I also believe that an update like this should come after the flameheart storyline is over, bringing ancient skeleton lords trapped in ice as a new threat, I even imagine that this area might not naturally have ice but be the result of a curse of the ancients to imprison certain enemies.
The problems that need to be solved:
- Increase the number of ships per server, and this is not a very simple thing to do because of stability.
- Making devil's roar and this new area an interesting place to venture, attracting players' attention somehow to not concentrate all ships in the 3 regions.
Ignoring the ship count and possibility to use portals to go to an instanced area, what is really different about an ice area that everything thinks would be great? Everyone comes up with ideas like players slipping, icebergs, ability to slide, etc... but I don't think it's worthwhile to create a special set of rules for an area that is likely to be abandoned. It would basically be a white textured set of islands with maybe some snow in the air instead of rain.
Ice Region is to Sea of Thieves what Night Maps are to FPS games; a cool idea that in reality are not played nearly as much as you'd think.
