New guild - The Cartographers Guide - a different type of grind

  • Okay, so the idea is to solely promote exploration. So.…

    1. A basic reputation increase is given per island you visit,
    2. Upon visiting an island, you get access to a new more detailed map of that island when interacting with the map table.
    3. when you click on the island the world map is replaced with a gold-hoarders style map you can zoom into.
    4. Further reputation is gained in this faction hand-in-hand with gold hoarder riddle quests and discovering cave paintings etc and upon completion you obtain a small marker on the map to mark a place of interest.
    5. outside of gold-hoarder missions, you'd have a paper and pen in the inventory wheel where you could mark your latest find and if it's relevant, you'd get a "congratulations you've discovered a place of interest". message
    6. any discoveries you make have to reported to the Cartographers guild to obtain your reputation gain in that area and retain the information on your more detailed map.
    7. "uncharted" islands would become "chartered" upon discovery... I mean come on, we'd be stupid pirates not to keep note.

instead of reputation it would be a % to complete, (I normally hate these but in this case I think it could work) This could scale as new areas become available

    1. Detailed maps would just be available to the pirate who had discovered the most, but you could "show each other"
    2. you could introduce new "hidden" areas this way without telling the community causing a buzz of excitement. Where is this new place? is it a hidden cave? an underwater place? etc etc.
    3. The tall tale tales could also add to this... I've not complete the Tall tales but if you were aiming for 100% exploration I'm assuming you'd have to.

  • I like this idea, and I think one of the top level rewards (getting lvl 50 in the explorers guild, for example) should be a world map you can access and interact with through your equipment radial, so you can still use a map even when separated from your ship

  • You could unlock map table, looking glass & compass cosmetics. I think it would produce more exploration co-operation within crews too. Also cause an online buzz. People would be comparing maps to find out what they had left to discover.

There're sooo many cave paintings, graves, lost anchors, and skeletons now that to reach top level would take an age and would be a whole different type of adventure

  • I would grind non-stop to 50 in this trading company if it meant I could open up a map (similar to the current map table) while on foot or in a rowboat!!!

Also all-in for map table cosmetic choices. Bring it!

  • Ewww....

  • I suggested something similar to this well over a year ago - mine was much simpler though, only really suggesting that they add cartography-based commendations for exploring each of a region's islands for the 1st time - similar to how you can already get them for the Devil's Roar...

    There would be:
    Shores of Plenty Cartographer,
    Ancient Isles Cartographer, and
    The Wilds Cartographer, along with
Devil's Roar Cartographer, which is already in the game.
Get all of them to earn the Master Cartographer/Master Explorer title.
Doubloons would be earned for each one completed.

  • I think something like this would be a great addition to this game.

I mean I know it's not full of swashbuckling excitement but it would give us a REALLY good reason for completing riddle quests which never give a balanced reward for the effort put in.

I also want a reason to investigate all the interesting nooks and crannies SOT currently has. When you first start playing the game and find, "the smuggling tunnels on Sailors Bounty" but then after looking about you find, "they are just aesthetically pleasing" it's a bit disappointing. Something like this would bring a "little" excitement into exploration
