A game mechanic to extend "Lazy Beard"

  • You know when you're playing and you get a phone call or you need to eat dinner or oversee bath time and you lean your controller on a pillow so your character revolves in circles to keep you on the server you're playing because you're half way through an Athena quest and don't want to get booted for being lazy? Well how about a game mechanic that gives you a 30 minutes break? (it wouldn't stop you from getting sunk though)

Perhaps a shabby toilet door on your sloop. or sleeping in the bed. They'd be an onscreen countdown to tell you when you're gonna get lazy bearded. You'd also only be able to use the function twice in a 12 hour period and that would apply across server merges.

We all do the "lean controller on pillow" maneuverer in an emergency and a mechanic such as this could be funny..... You could get a flame of fate from the Ferry "Died peacefully in their sleep"

  • Man i was readin this idea. And come to the thread and see your name....
    Should have guessed.
    Another solid idea mate.
    Did u just say toilet?
You know whos gonna show up now

  • @nwo-azcrack LOL. Yep, a good reason to have a bog on board

  • On a ship, the toilets are called "heads". The reason for this is that, in the days of sail, the crew did their business over the bow of the ship, clambering into the beakhead. So, a shabby door would not fit.

However, I don't mind the idea, of there being some mechanic to allow an extended absence. Sometimes, you do have a legitimate need to step away from the game for up to 30 minutes, or so. It could be as simple as using the sleep emote on a bed (or anywhere below decks on a sloop).

yes why not have the pirate in the hammock and then your idea would work

    @Deckhands? mate

  • Actually I think this is a very helpful idea. As long as the whole crew agrees to it having an extended away option could be useful. Only issue I could see would be to not have the option availible at any outposts as it would make spawning a ship in a conflict.

  • No problem for a crew, you can rejoin.
    Only helpfull for solo players.
Can i kill you while you are sleeping?

  • @surveyorpete cool, I had no idea about the "heads" thing. interesting news. In that case I like @ClosingHare208 idea of hammocks. That would work.

  • @bugaboo-bill Yes you could kill the person that's AFK. You can't have "safe places" for pirates. Yep, mostly this would be for the solo guy, but also for Open crews. If you've joined an open crew you wouldn't want to loose your space in the team to another. That's the reason for the twice in 12 hours limit. You can't have someone sleeping all the time and reaping the rewards.

  • I think it is great idea!

  • I like the idea but make it a crew vote like getting Brigged.
    Grant request to sleep 15
    Grant request to sleep 30
    Grant sick leave 60

  • @guybrush3pwood2 By using a crew vote you can eliminate the "twice in 12 hours". There will be no need for it. Two solid ideas this morning......... Someone posted on Spinning the wheel. I love both these posts!

  • @duke-of-spire Yeah I saw that post. Great idea.

  • That's the reason for the twice in 12 hours limit. You can't have someone sleeping all the time and reaping the rewards.

It sounds like you'd want it as a mechanic to save progress rather than loot. It could even be made so that you don't get rewards (from your own crew and alliances?) while you are away, if needed.

And indeed, it should not be available at outposts or in Arena (I've seen enough AFK people in Arena as is).

Would megs, krakens and skeleton ships still attack you when you are AFK?

  • @caudipteryxzoui Yep, that's basically it.
Anything could happen whilst you're sleeping. We wouldn't want to introduce ways pirates could avoid encounters.

If you did die whilst sleeping, your pirate wouldn't have to appear on the ferry, they could just respawn still in bed on the new boat.
