Sinking a ship should make supplies float up

  • With all the talk about the new ship damage system I think we'll be using a lot more planks to make repairs than we used to, which is not a big deal it just means that you'll have to be more careful with your supplies and should stock up more planks. BUT it should also come with a way for a ship to restock after sinking another ship.

Until now if you're low on supplies after a fight you just had to sail to an island or an outpost to get some, but if you got no planks left, your masts are down, anchor and helm are broken then doing so might prove rather.. challenging.

If you managed to barely win the fight and sink the other ship but yours is too damaged to sail, then those floating barrels that just came up from their sunken ship are the best reward you could ask for, aside from loot and gold ;)

I know this has been suggested many, many times before, I'm just reposting this since it has more relevance now with the new additions to the game.

This is already a feature in Sea of Thieves.

  • @exeternautical You can find barrels with supplies floating in the sea, but they don't come from ships. What are you talking about?

  • Plenty barrels do spawn where ships sink but it's not instant as it should be like loot coming from Skelly Ships.

Another thing that needs to be addressed is plenty barrels sinking and despawning AS SOON AS YOU GET NEAR THEM. If they need to despawn so there's less stress on the server, make plenty barrels in clusters of 3. One food, one Planks and one Cannonballs and up the quantity in each barrel. Problem solved.

Every time ships sink barrels float up. They don’t rise immediately. If I had to guess, it takes about 5 minutes or so. I have been in the devils roar area and my ship was sunk by the volcano. When I returned, there are barrels floating where my ship once stood.

I normally stock up on supplies by immediately dropping the anchor whenever I see barrels. I also recommend using the storage chest in the rowboat if you are lucky enough to find one

  • @offic3rravioli

I think you raise a good point given we know about the increased ship damage now, I wonder how easy it would be to introduce a 'resource barrel' as part of the loot from ships which doesn't contain everything but a nominal amount of cannonballs, wood and bananas so it doesn't trigger a rash of sinking other ships just for supplies?

  • @katttruewalker Well it would create a risk/reward dynamic, if all you need is supplies, would you risk losing even more of them to get some, maybe even ending up with much less than what you started with. In that case it would be wiser to just go to an island or search for barrels in the sea. The idea of floating barrels from sinking ships (they should float up just like loot, not after 5 mins..) is to get restocked at least partially to aid your repairs AND to prepare in case that crew comes back, because they'll have fresh new supplies since they respawned, while your barrels are getting emptier and emptier each time.

  • Good idea! You got my up vote.

  • I'm very split up about it.

It would be cool to have, but i would incentivice PvP too much for me.
How pvp has evolved recently i dont want to push it further.

  • @bugaboo-bill Again, I seriously doubt anyone would risk attacking another ship, wasting supplies in the process, just to get more supplies, probably ending up with even less than what they started with. This mechanic is more to aid the ship that got attacked in the first place, and managed to survive. Not the other way around.

Now, imagine an idea like "reward a fixed amount of gold when sinking another ship". Now that's something that would incentivize PVP in a BAD way.

Yeah, I don't think it incentivise so much as it gives something to lose to the attacker, in a way of "feeding" and helping the crew you are attacking.

Imagine a crew "A" doing a fort. Crew B goes straight for them. Crew B get sunk. Crew A gets the supplies. Crew B comes back again, potentially dies again. Crew A gets the supplies again. Crew A is salvaging the attackers, instead of losing a war of attrition with people throwing themselves at them again and again.

That would actually be a benefit for people that gets attacked. You get to salvage the loser's ship. If a ship was coming to attack you anyways, I don't think the supplies would be the sole reason but just an added bonus, that can benefit either crews.

Edit: Of course it shouldn't be all the supplies, but a random percentage of the existing supplies would be great, including special items like cursed canonballs if any were in the ship's barrels.
