Brig goes faster than sloop against the wind?

  • was being chased by a brig for an hour, been a while since ive been really chased by anybody, just got back into the game a weekish ago. couldnt out run the thing, about halfway through we looked up what we were doing wrong, saw something about a glitch with the sails being perpendicular to the wind making you go faster, that didnt work either, they seemed to be going slightly diagonal to catch a little bit of wind, and eventually theyd come close enough somehow to not only keep up but start shooting at us. only thing that kept us alive is turning, throwing the anchor, putting it up and going the other way. though we could only do it for so long, and most of the time it put us with the wind. tried looking around to see what we could have done better, any tips?

  • As I understand it, Brigs can outrun anything except a Galleon with the wind.

    Best advice is to be creative, and utilize the smaller ships' agility. Turn harder and faster, lure your pursuers into tighter spots, board them whenever possible.
    Gunpowder kegs of course, are always welcome if you have any.

    My mind starts spinnin' whenever people ask me how to deal with PvP situations, and there's no right or wrong answer, 'cause you're dealing with real people. It's about seizing opportunities and thinkin' outside the box.
    For example, if you force a brig into the wind, and they attempt the sails forward glitch, they'll have to either;

    1 - Put full sails forward, which will block line of sight for their helmsman, forcing more crew communication. A simple jump-N-board tactic will cause disarray to that system, givin' your ship time to manouver away.

    2 - Keep sails angled for wind, often meaning they will lose critical speed, givin' you a little bit of an edge.

    So long as you remain ahead, you have at least 1 ship-lengths worth of chances to take to beat your pursuers.

  • @ooops-i-pooped the mistake made was going diagonal as if you have a bit of wind so do they and a bit of wind makes them faster. Go dead straight into the wind. The perpendicular glitch doesn’t work with a sloop too well as it isn’t fast enough. Any wind in the other players sails gives them the speed advantage which is why they caught up in the end.

  • @tundra-793 said in Brig goes faster than sloop against the wind?:

    right, but im saying we were going against the wind, in a sloop, and they somehow managed to maneuver to gain speed to get along side us.

    i also probably should have mentioned that we boarded them two times, dropping their anchor, and kegged them once, and they eventually caught up with us. this however may have been when we were going with the wind which would explain why they recovered so quickly, cant quite remember.

    the only thing i can think of is that angling their boat and sails and catching a bit of wind gave them the opportunity to somehow get close, even though coming back to our ship them would be going against the wind, which should have caused them to slow back down.

  • @weststormborn right, im saying i looked it up while they were chasing us, we started turning the ship and sails perpendicular to the wind, and they started turning to get a bit of wind it seemed, and they caught up. it didnt really seem to matter if we went with the wind or against it, they always managed to get enough distance on us to close the gap over and over, for probably 30-40 minutes after we realized what we were doing wrong.

  • @ooops-i-pooped yea if a brig can turn diagonals to gain wind they have a better chance of catching up. Looking at your next reply I must commend you for keeping the heat on them. Next time I suggest consistent pressure to them. Have you better PvP player keep killing them with their anchor down and you’ll be able to escape quicker

  • @weststormborn yea was me an a buddy who gets on less than i do, was just wondering if there was something we might have been goofing on or if there was something simple like "oh yea no problem just do x y and z and youll stay ahead", cause as i understood it, as long as youre going against the wind in a sloop youll outrun bigger ships, which didnt seem to be the case, but its probably user error.

  • @ooops-i-pooped you got basics mostly down. They might need to fix the against wind speeds for the brigs to make it a more fair.

  • @ooops-i-pooped look at this
