Character creation, can I save my progress?

  • After about ~2hrs I need a break from going through hundreds or thousands of characters, since none of them are ones I'd want to use for rest of the time I'm going to play this. Got one good male character, but I'll probably not want to permanently play a male character, so he won't do.

Only about 1/100 characters meet the absolute basic criteria, so I expect this process to take maybe 5-6hrs. So this is going to take a while, probably several days. Really wish Rare wasn't so lazy on the character customization, so that we could quickly make a character and play, instead of waiting for the 1/10,000 character that we actually want to play.

But anyway. Can I exit the game without losing my favorites?

  • It's simple, don't overthink too much. You can buy all the beards and hairstyles in game, same as tatoos and scars and hairdyes.

So all you need to focus on is skin colour, body build and face.

  • @hynieth Getting the body build, gender, and face right is about 1/100. but usually that means it's a potato face, another 1/100 to find a decent character. So in the end it's 1/10,000.

Can you change the lip color though? Majority, I mean like 9/10 have purple/black lips.

Also can I create a character, to see what it looks like in game. Then delete it, and try another one of my favourites? Or do I lose all my favorites when I go back to menu or delete my character?

  • You lose all you’re favs.

Cosmetics available in game makeup hair tattoos etc

You get one pirate if u delete him/her you lose all you’re current gold etc

  • Reminds me of a friend who spent hours making his Dark-Souls char, I as a Demon's souls Vet was laughing in the background for all those hours knowing he'd be Jerky after the first death :-P

  • @aglasgowthing
Where is that stuff though? there's 0 information about customization in sea of thief available.

  • @fakechair488135 you need gold to buy it, it’s in the clothing shop at the outposts spread all over map. My advice would be pick s charc with the shape you like the. Work from there.

  • @fakechair488135 As others have stated the majority of things you can customise, it took me and my friends hours to find ours.

But you are basically looking for a shape and facial features you like. Eg eye shape, nose, mouth, skin tone and weight.

Everything else you can basically edit In game like:
    Hair/Hair colour
    Tattoos/scars
    Make up.
Down to customisation options like clothes, hooks, peg legs ect..

But I believe you will lose all your favourited pirates if you back out. They only stay for that session or untill you pick one.

Also as a reminder, once you pick your pirate there’s no going back unless you want to lose everything. (Which will add to the OCD of finding the right one, I know)

  • From my experience, favoriting something makes it so similar pirates do not appear. I would ignore favorites because the likable features will probably not be there if you keep them favorited

  • same i wish they actually let us customise them instead of randomly generating them. it is a terrible system imo. often find a charecter that i think is ehhh ok after 2 hours of randomly generating them. and then they still arent even exactly what you want. i just wish they would let us manually create them and i dont see why we cant

  • @captancola lol wut, that sounds super dumb if they actually did it like that

  • its impossible to find the perfect character imo, i have made 3 characters and they never get to be exactly what you want, but eventually you learn to stick with them even though you hate them : (

  • @knifelife So can I remove things like, black/purple lips. "Undereye shadow". Face Tattoes?

  • @fakechair488135 Ummm you will be able to replace them with other make up options I believe yes.

They may be the default look if you choose the pirate with them if that makes sense. So you wouldn’t be able to remove it, but you could cover it up if you unlocked something else.

  • Maybe I should have taken my pirate more seriously. I spent about 5 to 10 minutes, found one that was okay, and that was the end of it. They are my friend on the sea, and that’s just how he looks.

  • @ghostpaw I was lucky and found mine on launch in about 20 mins. But before that in the betas ect...

My god I was there for hours and almost had a breakdown xD

  • With the $1 game pass I'm thinking about starting a new account now that I've hit pirate legend. Not looking forward to spending 1+ hour on character creation

  • @knifelife i spent 2 hours creating my most recent pirate, and the way i got his was because i was like well holy guackamoly at this rate im never going to play the game again so i just picked a guy i thought was ok, i currently wish i had someone else but i cant be bothered to start over again : ( this is why i want there to be an option to have multiple pirates, like your own personal crew that you can select from in the menus, each on their own adventure

  • Yeah, it's tough. If, for example, you want to show your Asian origins in an appropriate character, it will take a long time until a suitable form is randomly found. Skin colors in general, that is not considered. But that was also intentional: rather chance than selection should determine the figure.

Originally you got a random figure, finished. Now you can choose longer. If you can live with it, then set a time limit and take the next best one. Or let another person count backwards, say, from 50 down. She then calls Stop, and you just take the then active one.

And no, with a new start your favourites are gone again, I think.

  • @d4m0r3d
I got this most handsome pirate, who if I wanted to play a male character would be very satisfied with... But I don't think I'll like him in the long run.alt textalt text

Really sucks you can't swap out a character, even if you had to level them separately. One single character just isn't enough. Usually females have the most customization options, but in SoT males seem to have the best options, but I don't want to only pick a character because of the customization options.

Can I make multiple accounts on the same account maybe? That will have a save file each?

  • I used to believe that detailed character creators were the way to go... but, for this type of game at least (and I'm not sure it's not better for MMOs) this type of character creation is best.

I believe it creates a character with... well... character... :) And I now find it more interesting to play into the personality that I interpret the generated pirate has.

To me this just isn't the game for a detailed character creator.

  • @lethality1 Most look the same, potato faces who have taken a bath in a bee hive, with the majority being at least 70 years old.

  • The uglier the pirate the better. No one is intimidated by a handsome pirate.

  • And this is ONE of the reasons so many of us dislike (in some cases hate) the IPG. "Be the Pirate you want to be" was how the game was sold to us... but we can't make the pirate we want, we have to chose from an infinite list of ones they'll let us be...

When starting this game, I set myself a time limit on how long I'd allow myself in the IPG before taking the best one I found in that time - I've honestly regretted that decision pretty much every day since. The only recourse I have is to lose all progress, all cosmetics etc and start fresh, once again using the horrid (imo) IPG to attempt to get a pirate I actually like the look of. This whole process could be avoided if they'd just let us make our own, or at the very least, allow us to select from certain options to narrow down what the IPG selects for us.

The game is tied into cosmetic progression but that is made somewhat moot if you're not happy with how your pirate looks in the first place. All the outfits in the world (and let's face it, there aren't really all that many of those) aren't going to fix the issue of you not liking your pirate's appearance.

The simple answer to your initial question is no, you can't save your progress. You'll start completely fresh if you turn off the game without creating a character. You can however, go ahead and create the character and if you don't like it when in-game, can then reset and choose a fresh one again... but once again, with no presets saved.

  • Play around with your character for a few days. Any progress you make in that day or two is not going to significantly make a difference. Chances are the first couple of days will only yield a few thousand gold unless you find a competent crew. Later on you’ll be earning tens of thousands in gold during sessions. Just play for a while and don’t be shy about restarting in the first few days.

  • @xot3rm1n4t0rox There really should be settings for gender, skin color, general ethnicity, age, and a general build size. After that it could generate random characters.

2 genders, ~4 different body builds, ~6 skin colors, ~4 ages. Just to get one where the lack of teeth or potato face isn't sastisfactory, is 1/192 characters, or 24 complete IPG regenerations. That's just for one single try of a character that meets your very basic parameters.

  • @lethality1 for me it feels like an empty shell thats being forced on me : (

  • Take your time! I picked one I don't care for. :(

    lol

A lot of people spend a lot of time looking. If you feel you want to keep looking, keep looking!

  • Doesn't seem like there's any makeup options to change lips or fix "undereye shadow" https://imgur.com/a/HVHYqPO

  • Character creation scars are permanent too, even with other scar sets added on to them. Take your time finding a good female, you will find one you like eventually and it's better than regretting it later. That being said I played (for only a session at a time) about 3 diff characters before findin one I liked.
