Replay System

  • Many games have a replay system, and this makes the game more fun because we can share our replays with people. In this, I always record the plays, but unfortunately show them in first person is not always the way.

Sometimes a lot of cool things happen on the screen at the same time, and we cannot capture that without another player recording.

I think a replay system, where we can move the camera, cut, edit the video in the game itself, save and even share with the Sea of Thieves Community would be a lot of fun.

I believe that this could not only help players to publicize their moves, but also help publicize the game and showcase its potential.

We can have many epic battles to share with friends.

  • These are always great to have in games. I used to record and view guncam footage in Air Warrior, an online WWII dogfighting game in the 90s which had a similar system as well as Battlefield 2 which allowed you to record game sessions.

However these features are usually the last things added because they require quite a bit of work. You need to come up with a file format that contains compressed commands that can be recorded while playing and used to rebuilt the sequence frame by frame, and then have a control system to do all the forward and backward playback by stacking and removing these frame states to adjust the game world.

It'd be great if they added this to Sea of Thieves (and any game, really) but I wouldn't hold my breath.

  • The difference between this game and games with replay systems is that games with replay systems are games that are in-and-out combat games. Games like Overwatch and Fortnite. It's easy for servers to hold replays because those games have rounds that can only last so long. That's not how Sea of Thieves works. You can be in a game seemingly endlessly. There's a huge difference from certain games being able to hold 20 minute game replays on their servers and Rare trying to hold 6 hour session replays.

  • @deramixus disse em Replay System:

Download Nvidia GeForce experience and press ctrl shift f10.

    On a Xbox?

This is not really a problem as the only thing that needs to happen is the client system would only need to record the data that been collected for that session. The only problem then is if a player plays for a very long time in which a limiter can be placed and adjusted for avialible Harddrive space. The issue i see with a record system is with the playback. As frist they would need to add in the ability to replay the content thru the client without imput from the server which would cause certian data not to be displayed such as islands your current not standing on as that data is streamed in by the server. If they did add the imput from the server a good portion of server space would have to be dedicated to at as it would have to run an entire private instance for each individual playback.

  • @targasbr so kinda what gta has with rockstar editor?

  • @baftnation Exactly.

  • @targasbr i can only respond with: YES!

  • I be thinking for ye Xbox capture, we be needing bindable shortcuts to ye screenshots and record that.

  • As a PC player, I currently have to open the Windows game bar and start recording if I anticipate something cool happening. (if I anticipate it, it doesn't happen anyway). Maybe there's a way to record the previous 30 seconds via the Xbox app? I don't know, I hate that app so I haven't paid much attention.

Nonetheless, I would very much love a streamlined way to capture some of the epic moments after they happen.

Game DVR on Win10 has a “Record That” option. Depending on what you set the duration for, “Record That” will record the last X minutes of gameplay. No need to “anticipate” anything.

  • I commonly "stream"my gameplays to save something cool that happened, but we don't have free cameras...

  • @targasbr I like the idea, just I know that it is hard to realize properly.

There are a lot of sessions, different lengths in duration and a ton of it will never be used. I doubt they have the resources to dedicate to a feature this big that will not affect most of their players or the game experience directly. Might be nice further down the line.

  • @cotu42 I may be wrong, but the information passed clientside to serverside is rather small. Saving this data should not be such a big job, and it may be possible to make it optional for players, reducing server load. Do you think it would be functional?

  • @targasbr I think it is feasible for sure, though to have good replays you also want to give us some camera movements or editing tools. Which would need development regardless. Rare wouldn't be willing to give us half baked tool most likely.

To minimize duplication of information you might want to keep it in your own control and have people download it when they want to edit and revisit. Also reduces requirements on client side which usually is a better client service.

Even if it wouldn't be much data for let's say an hour session. It is still data that needs to be stored somewhere while before they could clean it up currently to free up capacity. When dealing with the large amount of players, it still needs a proper approach else it can cause leaks, large amounts of storage required (costly) and other issues that might influence the gameplay and server performance.

Based on how it is setup now it could be easy or require adjustments to realize, but for that real assessment on difficulty I would need more data.

Technically it is doable in any case.

  • @cotu42 I think what you're talking about may already be built into UE4...

Not being a developer, I have no idea what it would take, if it were even feasible, for Rare to give players the replay option. I'd actually be kinda surprised, however, if Rare wasn't using the replay system, in some way, internally.

  • @bifbologna This may be easier to implement than we think.
