To the underwhelmed: What would you have Rare build next?

  • So there is another thread that asks the question: Who actually cares about lantern colors? The contention of the original poster is that Rare could have done more with their time than make the lantern's glow different colours. It turns out that many respondents quite like the latest Bilge Rat adventure, and the new toys to play with.

Indeed: In the past few months, people have been suggesting Rare do something special for Halloween, and they did. Others, now, are asking for something special for Christmas. I don't agree, for all sorts of reasons, but that is a different discussion.

So often, you hear pleas for more, and richer, content. Almost as soon as any new content drops, there are people saying that it is not enough.

People even demand things simple things like:

    • New shanties (and shanties exclusive to PLs)
    • New clothes (some exclusive to PLs)
    • New ship cosmetics
    • New personal weapons

In the "lantern colours" thread, someone suggested that "that should of been in game the first three months". Why should it have been? What else is such an obvious and basic addition to the game, that we should have had it from Day One? Or within weeks of release?

We just got a whole new area on the map: the Devil's Roar. The number of regions increased from 3 to 4, with the new one being significantly different from the old world. And yet, it is not enough.

We have had a number of major content releases, with numerous smaller fun fill-in releases in the last months. We now have skeleton ship battles as a permanent feature. We have a whole new region to challenge us. We have Meg popping up in the seas (although I wish we could have the more intense Hungering Deep style battle as a permanent feature.) We have been given smaller treats like the current Festival of the Damned, gunpowder skellies, and - yes - even thrones and statues, to play with.

And yet, people want more. I imagine if, tomorrow, there was release featuring six new shanties, a new range of clothing options, a boarding axe, a grappling hook, and a new "Adventurers' Club" faction paying bounties for defeating Meg and Karen; then - next week - we will have posts here saying it was not enough, or this stuff should have been in the game forever, and "where is the content"?

To all those that say Rare is not doing enough, quickly enough: WHAT WOULD SATISFY YOU?

What would make you shut up for a couple of months?

(And please don't suggest Battle Royale. Apart from the fact that it is a bad idea, if Rare have to disable blue statues to ensure the servers can cope, how do you possibly imagine they could handle 20 or more player ships in the same seas?)

  • @surveyorpete as I am forced to take a break from this great game, against my will, I miss it dreadfully. The game has everything it already needs for me, but a few things that don’t effect content is what I’m looking for. I’d like a bit of dueling with fellow shipmates or even a few more emotes like the bowing one in the beta? I believe. All in all I like how the game is, but do know I haven’t tried the new bilge rat event yet.

  • @weststormborn

I’d like a bit of dueling with fellow shipmates or even a few more emotes like the bowing one in the beta.

They are not unreasonable suggestions. But my point is: If you were to get both of those, would it keep you from wanting more? And if they were to be provided, many others would complain Rare were wasting their time on trivialities and not focusing on providing "real content".

I really want to hear about some mind-blowingly amazing idea, of such richness and depth, that it would keep the naysayers quiet for a while.

  • I couldn't agree more with what you have to say. I was one of the commenters on the lanterns thread, too. I've noticed that the community is divided on two issues mainly:

•The kind of content and the amount we get.
•whethere the game should be more PvP or PvE.

Rare has done something great with this game and it only continues to get better. Earlier on there was a guy complaining in a thread about the lack on any dlc sized updates and I had to mention Forsaken Shores, the upcoming Shrouded Spoils, and the unannounced one that they're announcing on Nov 10. The game has so much coming to it. Rare even said they're looking for more testers for the unannounced one once it is announced because it's bigger than anything so far.

I don't see what there is lacking in this game.

  • Target the core gameplay loop - add more variety to the existing trading merchants, new twists on existing voyages, new voyage types, changes to the game world, make the world more dynamic.

The things they've added are nice, but they are just one off events that get ignored after the event ends or they are just peripheral activities. They don't address the number one criticism of the game when it released - the core loop is highly repetitive and the world itself is empty and unchanging.

  • @surveyorpete ah alright. Then it would be making voyages more dynamic with a bit more effort to getting treasure then a few fetch quests. Like how @D3ADST1CK is talking about. It’s the enrichment of the game that would make most naysayers say no more. But, there will be the whiners playing as naysayers to give useless complaints

  • I would really love for them to add new forms of life in the npc world, so as in, more npc people that actually interact accordingly to the environment and whatever it is they’re doing. Rather than just being planted in one spot with some read through dialogue. That reminds me of old single player games I used to play years ago. Along with this, more complex AI threats. I played RDR2. Got into a fist fight with an npc, it felt real, and challenging. Whacking away at skeletons here on SoT is not challenging, just bland and tedious. Oh, and more animal life would also be great.

Do something to bring more life to a server. Player interaction is definitely far less frequent than it used to be in the early days. I really don’t know what has to be done to fix that, whether it’s make the servers more capable of handling more players, or make some kind of engaging server activity along the lines of a skull fort. The skeleton ships obviously didn’t hit the mark.

And of course, add pets. I still don’t understand why that was “PuT oN tHe BaCkbUrnEr”. Lol. That was put aside for what? I’m not even gonna go there. These are just a few things I can think of, I won’t suggest anything else in fear of upsetting the people with low standards here on the forums.

  • @scraping-static to get more players to interact I think there needs to be some kind of an event that happens at outposts where an anchor shape cloud appears over a Outpost and everyone has to go there to participate in a tavern party where there could be drinking games where the first to black out loses and safe spawns on there ship while the other wins a commendation. I'm sure there are more ideas too for an Outpost event, like firing crew mates into the air in an attempt to land on a bullseye for commendations or gold.

The main goal being to make friends/rivalries and add some more at the outposts. Also each Outpost should have something unique about them, but I haven't given that a ton of thought.

  • @cptn-quickdickn the curse causing effects actually sounds awesome. Similar to cursed cannonballs except a random curse type is placed on a new "cursed chest" that might cause your ship to move slower, ride lower in the water, randomly drop the anchor, or even cause a reapers mark to appear until you sell the chest or get it off your ship.

    Sounds pretty awesome.

  • A reason of why some would think this its not enough or for the game stand point itself its the progression system. Now its not the cosmetics are the problem but the leveling of it as once you get max ranks from all fractions, there is a point of what motivation is there left? I mean a simple solution would be ranking up as the most skilled or the most richest pirate in like a worldwide ranking systems. But thats just for the progression system, what I also see why some may think this isn't enough is that the clam "Make your own Adventure" wouldst work on anyone as fetch quests that repeat the same thing over and over would drive people away. The Cargo runs and DR did at least gave some varieties out of it, but doesnt hold for long with some.

I think my biggest reason why would be its a pirates game, so they want to attack npc merchant ships or battle the royal navy, etc as that could work just have like a progression of how many ships you sunk, or something like that, is probably a reason why some are not so pleased with the game at the moment. For me im ok with it of where it stands but a key thing the game needs is players, and if more players leave the more likely the servers be all quiet in certain time zones. But anywho thats what I think be the reasons why, not sure if its correct or not but it was worth a shot

  • @cptn-quickdickn

surveyorpete come on now, we’ve both been on the forums long enough to of heard a ton of great ideas by now. Ones that you know would add AAA-esk depth, rather than a lantern light changing feature. One like the joker chest idea, or giant roaming turtle island.

I have indeed read of a number of ideas: big and small. And we have had a number of releases: big and small.

My frustration is, no matter what Rare delivers, it is never enough for some people. Many people wanted something special for Halloween, and Rare delivered. But already people are complaining it was too little, or too light-weight.

If you got wild boars, or cute crabs, or the Joker Chest (whatever that is) or a giant roaming turtle island, someone will be complaining that is it not enough. They will still want more.

I don't pretend the game is perfect, and I have my own ideas about what could be changed or improved. But I look forward to every content update, and trust Rare will constantly make the game richer and more varied. I guess my wish is that people would enjoy what they have, and stop complaining that Rare is not delivering. At least, not delivering, what they want.

  • @emerald-hyper

if more players leave the more likely the servers be all quiet in certain time zones

I do wish someone at Rare would put this to bed. I would like to see a "Behind the Scenes" video that explains how servers are managed.

I cannot believe that someone, once, decided that we need 12, (or 64, or 128) servers in each region, and that is forever the number we are stuck with – regardless of how many players are online at any one time.

This argument that "When I sail, I never see another ship. Therefore the game is dying." cannot be valid. Surely, the number of servers is not static but they are spun up and down to meet demand. Surely.

Please, Rare. Can you have someone explain this?

  • Well, specifically for the holidays, I would like to see the Christmas Kraken event, where the Kraken releases goods from the depths for us to plunder to our heart's content - or at least until he gets hungry.

    alt text

  • @surveyorpete i do not mean that the game is dying what i do mean it can be empty in certain periods of time, and to factor on that games will have its slow days depending if players are playing other recent new games such as RD2. All im saying that players would feel a bit board depending on what time they play on and weather or not theres A lot of other players or just 1 or 2 ships you might rarely see. Thats all I'm saying about it, not claming the game is dying

  • Fix combat:

    1. fix the sword
    2. polish the guns
    3. make Ai smarter.
    4. take away skeletons guns
    5. give skeletons new weapons that are dodge-able.
    6. add headshot mult.
    7. nerf barrel bombs
    8. increase timer to patch holes.
    9. Add a means to pull planks(from enemy ships only)
    10. add crouching

All of these changes other than smarter Ai and new weapons should be trivial to implement.

Add PvP matchmaking: this could be an old fashion Queue of for a match style or a much better option is a new port that you sail to and sign your crew up for a match. They could add multiple different modes later, but i think the first mode should be a simple crew death-match(last crew sailing wins).

Make rewards activity/resource based: It's hard to give a damn about cosmetics(even when they add something I like) when I can just buy it with all the gold/doubloons I already have.

    1. PvP arena score for unique rewards
    2. give exp/drops for killing certain enemies that we can use to get certain gear(colect skeleton bones for bonecrusher gear, kill kraken for kraken gear, etc.)
    3. Let us interact/gather from the world(pick flowers for dyes, catch snakes for poison, fish for food, pick bananas, harvest coral and other stuff for... stuff, etc.)

These are the 3 main fixes I want to see.

  • Left click to raise your tankard.

Seriously, this should have been in at launch.

  • @betsill no offense but only one or two of those features sound ok. The rest of them sound like you need to get better at pvp and pve most combat in the game is easy if you learn the meta of both players and Ai.

  • @calicojack1120 I'm way above average at PvP and PvE is trivial. My changes to PvE are to make it more fun, but go ahead and just say i'm bad because you don't understand the reason behind my proposed changes...

  • To be honest, I don't think these people will be satisfied. We have typical MMOs (read WoW) to thank for that; many players require tracked goals, the next power leap and multiple game types to get that satisfaction.
We also have a lack of story mission quests for people to progress through typical of RPGs, which often grips players to follow through, unlocking new areas as they progress etc.

Sea of Thieves is about enjoying the adventure at the time of the adventure, and the rewards you get are minor cosmetics to give you some sense of accomplishment.

For people who are saying its not enough now, it will never be enough until this game has a complete MMO and/or RPG experience attached, in my opinion.

  • I've made a post about this and a few others have too, but a Monster Hunters guild would be a cool addition. Was actually surprised there hasn't been one tied to the Hunters set.

Meg and Karen are already there. Just add a few more "Great Beasts" to get into fights with. Like everyone's already mentioned before the rock paintings show hints so maybe they are further down the line events.

Giant Boar that's super territorial of its big islands. They could just come charging at you through the brush so all you see is foliage moving until its too late.

Golden Eagles with nests on high peaks that you can steal their eggs. Stealing the eggs aggros the birds and they could swoop down and lift you up to drop you from way up high.

These 2 are my top picks but they could even add a sea serpent and the giant crab. It is just another fetch quest guild but it could spice things up with these mini boss battles.

  • @betsill its not fun if there is no challenges i dont completely disagree and im not trying to call you out i just want to make sure that your not proposing changes just so its easier for you thats all

  • It would satisfy me if people stopped shutting down good suggestions for Rare and stopped acting like the game is a complete game, since it is not.

P.S. the irony of your post is that everything you mentioned happen to be things people have been asking for a long time XD

  • More dynamic voyages, there has been absolutely nothing in this regard added to the game, the core mechanism of gaining reputation and income is exactly the same for someone who has played for hundreds of hours as it is for someone who's been playing for five minutes, that is, go here, get that, bring it back... Oh, you're a higher level? Let me copy and paste some skeletons for you.

The biggest addition to the game was Foresaken shores, a whole new area, with nothing new to do there, just the exact same thing as we've always been doing, only more annoying. The second biggest was skeleton ships, at first exciting but quickly a chore stretched out for weeks with the same old copy paste mentality as before.

Rare have approached content in the wrong way since the beginning, instead of making these flashy, but ultimately hollow additions we've seen so far they could have just focused on creating new and exciting ways of gaining rep and loot, you play this game for a day and you've seen almost all its got to offer. Which is a real shame, because the bones of the game are great, there just isn't much flesh.

  • @calicojack1120 I'm certainly not wanting to make the game easier. I very much like hard games and actively seek out games that are said to be difficult. When fighting skeletons with guns, you just take dmg then eat a banana. That's your only option. It's not fun because their is no interaction. in games with health regen that's ok, but not in a game like SoT. I would much rather take 3/4 of my health from a fireball or something that i can dodge than 1/4 my HP something i can't. I'm sure you've had the same thing happen where you run out of bananas and there is nothing you can do, but die because the skeletons don't miss(unless RNG likes you). I want a challenge not: "If-then" game-play.
My PvP changes are to make weapons feel better to use and fight against, make cannons more powerful/the primary weapon for ship to ship combat, and make barrel bombs not the best option in almost every PvP encounter.

  • @betsill ok i just see a lot of people complain that the game is too hard (mainly in pvp) and want it too change but i do see where your coming from especially if you play solo, with more people it does become easier which i think was rare's intention but i do agree with the cannons or something else that makes ships more viable in combat because right now there is two options play the "who runs out of resources sooner" or who can get on the other crew's ship and best them in pvp i would like that too change sorry if i offended you lol

  • Like others have already said, we need more repeatable, worthwhile content. The majority of the stuff they have added are a one time thing, minor and short.
I mean, I like it that skeltons are now able to carry gunpowder barrels. Did it deserve an event though? No. This is something you add in a weekly maintenance, together with fixes.

As for other things like mermaid statues or the megalodon. Why make them relevant only during the event? It doesn't really make sense.
Why not give us a reason to fight the megalodon, instead of him just being a part of the scenery? We have this awesome shark hunter ship skin but...No reason to go hunting any sharks or meg.
Why not give us an item or a buff from destroying the mermaid statues? We have these glowing cool statues that do nothing.

Instead of giving us new things to do, such as new types of voyages, factions, currency and in general, repeatable content, they give us a one time thing.
An update is released, you do the commendations, get the doubloons, buy the time limted items and...done.

Wouldn't it be better to enrich the world with more things to do in general, instead of only 2 weeks? After so many months, we should have more stuff to do besides the same 3 (now 4, cargo instead of animals) voyages.

If my friend that stopped playing on launch comes back, he will see the volcanos and the skeleton ships (if we decide to actually go for them, since it's not worth it). That's the problem. After seeing these, it's back to the normal voyages.

  • @solestone563412 said in To the underwhelmed: What would you have Rare build next?:

I am one of those who has been generally underwhelmed by most of what Rare has done since launch.

With that said, I agree with your post. It is silly and juvenile for people to complain about this latest Halloween special. *

Juvenile is a good way to describe someone who is satisfied with a few different lamp colours and a skeletons thrones mk II event, the complaints against these events are warranted.

People paid full price for a game that has a few hours worth of content (if that), they've hung around in hopes that maybe something special would be added but haven't really been rewarded with much. The time they've spent on new areas and one dimensional events would have been much better spent creating more interesting content in the form of better voyages and stories along the way, this game has very little that you can actually do when you boil it down.

  • I think the Halloween event is fine. I think most of the anger towards the event is because its an event you add to a game that doesn't have content problems, so when people are constantly expecting "the next update" to add some worthwhile core gameplay changes and they get lanterns that change color they are disappointed.

Its a bit of misdirected frustration, if you ask me but there's an underlying reason for it.

  • This last update revealed a lot about the Captain of the Ferry of the Damned.

His role in our characters life and death.

This is how Rare introduces new things into the game, including lore.
They won't just post patch notes

    The lights are cool too.

  • @solestone563412 That...doesn’t work as an analogy. Rare aren’t our parents, they’re developers developing a product for us the consumers. If we’re not satisfied, we let them know and they try to fix it, that’s how a business works.

They marketed adding lantern colours and face paint as a Halloween event, it’s not. I understand Rare struggling to keep up with player demands but that’s what happens when you release an incomplete game and make people pay full price for it.

  • My two cents:
I love this game and will play it for years to come. If you really wanted to stop the complaining for two months you'd have to inject the game with something everyone wants or at the very least fool the masses into thinking they're getting sort of what they want. Let me give an example: Sloopers have been crying for safe zones forever. To quiet them RARE could develop Militia Forts with a pvp run "Naval Alliance"that defend peaceful merchants when those merchants are chased into the sea zones that surround the Fort. A move like this would satisfy both the pve and pvp players because pve would get protection and pvp would have a fight on their hands (Naval Alliance players). I won't go into detail as I don't want to get off subject. I just feel RARE could accommodate things like this that would help balance the good and evil within the game.

  • @sytoki Do you have any idea of how committed RARE and Microsoft are to this game? This is Microsofts' "flagship" game for years to come! It's the reason RARE created such a beautiful environment for the game to thrive in. They will be adding DLC to this game for ages and not because it was released "incomplete" but for the right to say it is one of the "Greatest games of all time". When it's said and done $60.00 is a steal for what the game will be years from now. Imho

  • @surveyorpete knifes I would love sorry for the yoda frazing

  • @bern-dimaii No company can justify purchasing an incomplete game for full price and state that down the line it will be “the greatest game of all time”.

Yes, this game is a big stepping stone for Microsoft and Rare because of the crossplay, but promises and dedication alone are not enough to keep many of us happy.

As it stands sea of thieves has potential, but that’s about it. This is coming from a pirate legend btw, I have bothered to play long enough to achieve endgame. Still working on Athena’s though, but I hate those with a passion. It’s a spit in the face to the players that worked to endgame to offer them to do the exact same thing. They’ve been doing all this time.

  • I wouldn't mind seeing some additions and improvements to the combat system.
The additions would include dodging and ducking. This way players can potentially dodge gunfire/explosions if they time it right. Ducking could produce a stealth effect on land (maybe your gamertag would disappear like it does when submerged underwater) allowing you to potentially sneak away from pvp-ers or skellys.
Improvements include the response time for sword input commands because I find there is a noticeable delay between my controller input and the in-game sword slash. Do other console players notice this? What about PC players?
I also find that the skeletons can walk through my character. For example, they walk past my sword and disappear from my screen but they are still able to inflict damage. It's like they're standing exactly where my character is standing. I find it annoying.
