Ahoy maties!
The Forsaken Shores update introduced in the game this huge area called The Devil's Roar and it is full of lore. As it can be difficult to put the pieces together under the volcanoes, I thought it was interesting to gather all these elements in a thread to be able to discuss and confront our ideas safely.
The story behind Devil's Roar
Grace, or Captain's Morrow, was the leader of the Forsaken Shores Alliance. They had a charmed figurehead that allowed them to sail through The Devil's Shroud and to arrive safely in this new area much hotter than the last where they were. They reached an accord and named it The Devil's Roar. Even if those lands were inhospitable, they explored it for months in search of riches and with the intention of settling there one day.
Nevertheless, Jim Stitcher, following orders from his secret friend, plotted to stab them in the back. It turns out Jim's master was the first Gold Hoarder and was looking for a Box of Wondrous Secrets, something very rare and that has the power to corrupt crews. When the Alliance found it, Jim betrayed them and tried to kill everyone. However, the poison wasn't strong enough to kill Grace who has already drunk worst than that.
Grace chased Jim out of the area but unfortunately her ship, the Shroudbreaker, was smashed in a storm and got wrecked.
Alone, she learned how to survive the volcanoes and giant sharks that roam the area. She almost ended up in the belly of Redmaw, the biggest and most dangerous of them. Then there was the merfolk incident but Grace married their prince and things got smoothed over. After that, The Ferry of the Damned appeared and she spent decades in service of the Ferryman. Several years flew by during the invasion of the crabs but Grace took down Lord Pinch.
The figurehead fragments drifted through the Shroud and dispelled it completely. As Pirates are now able to sail safely towards The Devil's Roar without the charmed figurehead, Grace decided to stay there to keep the place safe from Jim. Even if she miss her home, The Wilds, she said it's her duty to protect The Roar.
In the mean time, while everyone was scrabbling to explore The Devil's Roar, Jim was digging up his old stash, The Box of Wonderous Secrets. His plans are already in motion and he's now resting on Liar's Backbone.
The Original Gold Hoarder
The Gold Hoarders are one of the three Trading Companies in the Sea of Thieves but they are tied with one of the terrifying Skeleton Lords, the original Gold Hoarder. The latter has a love of treasure so strong, it drives him even after death. His l**t for wealth has led him to replace parts of his own decayed body with his most precious riches.
Jim, who wears the Gold Hoarders tattoo, was sent by this Skeleton Lord to bring back a Box of Wondrous Secrets. Unfortunately, Hyde, the Gold Hoarder of Morrow's Peak Outpost, declined to give us more information about their acolyte. However, Stitcher told us that he actually owns a Box and his plans are still in motion. The Gold Hoarder will probably manage to get his hands on it, but for what purpose?
Grace thinks this Box has the power to create or break a curse. As a reminder, the Gold Hoarder is cursed, so does he want to get out of it? Or does he want to spread this curse? If you find one, be careful, it's still unclear what dangerous secrets it may contains. In any case this box seems to push their holder in their madness.
I guess it's something we will find out very soon.
Redmaw
Grace reveals that she fought a big shark she called Redmaw in her diary found on Ashen Reaches. If you remember our dear friend Merrick, this one told us where to face the Hungering One, just below Devil's Ridge on the border of the Devil's Shroud.
Now, if you look on the map you will see that this place is weirdly between Devil's Ridge and Ashen Reaches. Could the Hungering One be Redmaw? Grace and Merrick could possibly know each other.
The Merfolk
The mermaids are very interesting creatures but were so far only tales and, even if they were there, they have since departed, most likely spooked by the Devil's Shroud.
However, Grace reveals something that proves their existence. It seems that there was an incident with them and weren't so friendly, but Grace smoothed things over. She got married with their prince, probably in return for their departure. However, problems with the Devil's Shroud lately could change things and one can wonder if the southwestern lands of the Sea of Thieves known for their famous Merfolk paintings might see their return?
The Pirate Lord
I think that all good sailor knows this legendary pirate whose tales tell that he would be one of the first to discover the Sea of Thieves. At least, he's a figure that dominates many tall tales if he's not the most renowned.
Nowadays, he can be found in the Athena's Fortune Hideout, or at least his ghost. He's now dead but Grace, Jim and Ruby seemed to know him very well when they were kids.
In any case, we could learn more about his stories with the imminent release of Athena's Fortune Paperback and the future expansion of Athena's Fortune in the game.
The Ferryman and the Ferry of the Damned
The Ferryman is the one who provides mercy and rescues the pirates deceased from the Sea of the Damned. In his diary, referring to the arrival of the Ferry of the Damned, Grace tells us that their discovery of the Devil's Roar goes back a long time ago. As the Ferryman wasn't already there at this time, her friends couldn't be rescued.
Could the deceased members of the Forsaken Shores Alliance be lost in the Sea of the Damned?
Also, this spooky region has already been explored by Rare where players could somehow be able to sail their ship there. The Ferry of the Damned and its region could be extended in a future update.
Lord Pinch and the Crabs
Apart from the paintings of crabs found on the islands of the South of the Sea of Thieves, those little creatures are very mysterious. But Grace confirmed their existence with Lord Pinch, the huge crab she defeated. There was also this invasion of crabs but they have completely disappeared since. But you can still find a crab trap on Golden Sands and Morrow's Peak outposts.
Their return is perhaps feared?
Wild life
This area has still many secrets. Apart from bats, there are no animals but wild boars seem to have lived in this region or even be fierce threats to the inhabitants as one can find many totems and skeletons on these islands and even paintings of them on Devil's Ridge.
The Kraken has obviously not escaped to this region and has probably the most beautiful cave of the Devil's Roar. However, another monster seems to have roamed these lands as well. Brave pirates can find its skeleton at the foot of Fetcher's Rest Volcano.
While I look forward to read what everyone thinks, remember me maties,
Protect the secret at all costs!
