With Forsaken Shores released, this is the perfect time to introduce hang gliders into SoT to add 'new and interesting ways to play'.
The geysers on the Devil's Roar islands throw you into the air and there's not much you can do about it - you're going to take some damage unless you can land on a high enough rock.
Instead... what if these could be used by the player? A personal hang glider (like the one in Breath of the Wild) could be used to drift down from the geyser, reach new heights or swoop over enemies.
Not only this, but could be an effective way to descend from high outcrops (think Ancient Spire outpost, Thieves Haven and alike) or at the apex of a ride out of a cannon to gain more ground.
Would this take away from anything else? Not really. Jumping off a cliff would be a faster way to descend, whereas the hang glider would make you more of a target. Landing on an enemy ship with a hang glider would probably be less impressive then a well aimed/timed cannon shot.
It also wouldn't be overpowered. As a tool (much like an spyglass, speaking trumped or any other tool) you couldn't carry loot AND use the hang glider - so no hang gliding chests and other loot to your ship.
It'd be a fun addition, increase the range of tools available to pirates and add some interesting mechanics to the mix.
Then there's also all the potential for different hang glider styles from shops - kraken themed hang gliders, Rogue Sea Dog hang gliders, Admiral hang gliders, etc...
(And before you say 'pirates didn't have personal hang gliders' - true. They also didn't have sniper rifles, Ferries of the Damned or krakens).
