Stuck at 13fps no matter what settings and resolution...

  • Hi,

I made a topic before about the terrible performance I'm experiencing with my Dell XPS 9560 with i7-7700HQ and GTX1050 4gb but I didn't resolve the problem.
Another strange thing I noticed is that, no matter if I play in 4k, 1440, 1080,720 or even 540p, the fps in game are always stuck to 13-18 which makes my game experience horrible.
I even tried every combo of resolution+ graphic settings and I can tell you that playing at 540p with lowest graphic settings is the same as playing 4k mythic settings... 13fps, how's that possible? Am I doing some mistake?
I even checked my hardware performance during the game and cpu, gpu and ram are never at 100% and fans are never at their max stress...

  • You should get some software to really check your hardware.

CPU: Check temperature, is it throthling? Is ur Mhz at it highest, or does it stay low?
RAM: Do you have enough ram? u should have 6gb min to run windows + game atleast OK
GPU: Is the driver installed, do you have the cable to your screen connected in your GPU, not your mother board? How is the temperature? Is the MHZ of GPU ram and GPU cores ok?

    There's so much to check

  • Might it be that your laptop also has an integrated chip and you need to go to the Nvidia Control Panel and make sure the game is using the Dedicated GTX 1050 rather than the integrated one that is on the CPU?

  • @handsh0t the cpu isn't throthling and while I play it doesn't even go to max mhz. I have 16gb ram at 2400mhz so it's enough. The gpu has the latest firmware and no cable to connect monitor since it's a laptop.

@Bran-the-Ent I have set the nvidia control panel to always use gtx1050 and never the integrated one while playing SoT. But even if I was using the integrated one, how can the game run at 13fps with 4k max settings and same fps with the lowest settings and 540p?

  • @carlostagno Just providing you possible troubleshooting tip. Without seeing your setup, it’s difficult to diagnose. Could be the game is stuck at 1/2 Vsync. Best to contact support.

  • @carlostagno have you tried running in in borderless or full screen if u are borderless now. I myself have noticed more fps drops lately and know it is not my hardware as it has only happened in SoT. Best solutions is to verify all drivers are correct and maybe even try reinstalling SoT as a worst case scenario. It drops for me mostly going between decks or at an outpost.

  • @carlostagno Also, being a laptop gamer myself, I can tell you that there are other things that could be affecting performance - like power management settings both for the game and the global laptop settings. And, SoT is not as well optimized as other games. This is the first game in a long time where I can’t play at 1080p even on lowest settings on my gaming laptop. Some of that is due to age, but some of that is optimization.

  • @carlostagno
While playing your Mhz of your CPU should be at max. If not... either the CPU is getting to hot (throttling) or your power settings are not set up right. Try HIGH PERFORMANCE power setting.

Also on the latest builds of windows you can see the GPU usage in the TASK MANAGER
GPU 0 would be your integrated graphics GPU 1 your GTX1050. Do you see GPU 1 at 100% and GPU 0 at low% while ingame?
If not, it means your integrated GPU is used instead of your 1050. If you see GPU 1 (1050) at 100% it means it is fully stressed and it can't do more, but that wouldnt make sense if you play on lowest resolution.

I wouldn't mind trying to help out trough Teamviewer or something, but that would need some trust from your side, because I'll be in control of your PC (until you stop the Teamviewer session ofcourse :) )

As you can see here: someone playing on a laptop with same CPU but 1050TI
    but still, very good performance

  • Reset the settings in your nvidia control panel. If you have set custom settings for apps and games there may be something in there that is causing a cap on your fps.

  • @carlostagno Welcome to my world. Although I average 15 - 18 fps it does drop lower and never over 20fps.
I'm sorry I can't be of much help except to offer you this SoT Support Request ticket.

  • @ve111a yep I tried in both borderless and full screen mode, same problem.

  • @carlostagno Just a stupid question here, but are you sure you haven't accidently made it so Sea of Thieves has a low priority in the Task Manager? Or maybe made it so it only uses 1 of your Cores instead of all of them?

You can check that under Details in the Manager.

Right click on Sea of Thieves after you have opened it, check it's priority, and then check the thing under the priority thingie(Don't know what it is called in English, I have the Danish Version of windows) and see if all of the cores are assigned to it.

  • Probably some trojan doing mining or something like that. Is HDD usage at 100 % at all times in task manager?

  • @handsh0t probably you are right! I started the game, went to task manager and under gpu usage it says "gpu 0 at around 90%" and gpu 1 at 20-30%".... how can i solve this? in nvidia control panel under 3d setting I set sea of thieves to go with gtx1050 only.

  • Sounds like you might not know how your laptop works. SOME machines only use the built in card when pushing to am external monitor. And even though you set it to always use the 1050, that doesnt neccesarily actually get applied to every program properly. Ive seeb a few machines where you have to list the programs individually still that you want using the nvidia gpu. Also a 1050 isnt as good as you think it is....
You can play the game but 4k?...
Good luck figuring it out. Like others have said best bet is support as most of us would need to see it in person.
Had same problem on my own machine and others ive seen that have two seperate gpu chipa. It CAN take some extra tweaking to get it to work just how you want it

  • Plug in your powersupply If on a laptop otherwise u have a problem because i have 0 problems on My pc

  • @shuoink Who ever talked about external monitor? I said that i set Sea of Thieves individually to use only the gtx. And I never said that i can't play SoT only in 4k, but at every resolution and graphic settings it will stay at 13 fps.

  • @carlostagno said in Stuck at 13fps no matter what settings and resolution...:

    Thanks for confirming my thoughts.
Its a PC issue not a sea of thieves issue. Good luck figuring it out!

Mhm... Good we now know the problem.

I don't own a laptop so try some websites discussing this issue:
