Enemy nametag visibility is an issue

  • pirates are real and powerful and my friends

adding my hat to the "hide nametags" ring, I like to be sneaky, and I like to be ambushed, makes the game much more dynamic

  • @nomadical13 said in Enemy nametag visibility is an issue:

I don't see why you should see the nametags of your enemy at all. Why do we automagically know the name of that pirate? Did they telepathically send it to us? Is there a central pirate database we all have an uplink to?

Agreed, in an ideal world there would be no nametags without CHOOSING to disclose that information via the "make friends" emote, but I highly doubt Rare are going to go for that, which is why I opted to suggest toning down the range at which names can be seen.

  • there shouldnt even be a display name what element of stealth do you have with a marker on your head lame s**t

  • Rare pls fix, nametag visibility in its current state adds nothing but meta gaming and less immersion.

  • YES, enemy name-tags should only show if they are within so many in-game "paces" of you and they're roughly in the centre of your field of view e.g.
    alt text
So the guy shown here would have a visible nametag, but not enemies outside the indigo circle or further away than the area marked in blue, only allies nametags should show beyond that.

  • If this were to be taken up, then let name tags be visible when using the telescope or the eye of reach.

It is fun to know who you're fighting against. Even if I can't see the pirate's name if he is beyond a certain distance, I would want to see it when spying on them.

How else are they going to know they should be quaking in their boots when I'm coming after them with full sails :)

  • Good post OP.

They could add a feature similar to Make Friends, called Make Peace where you get their nametagged shown to you if you do it towards eachother until either has engaged in combat with the other or something if you actually play nice with another crew.

  • Aye! Agreed!

  • @barny64 Couldn't agree more. In a game all about role-playing and making our own story, we need a way to at least be sneaky.

  • You make an incredible point, it makes even the most experienced players be quickly dispatched. Name tags should only be seen when your crosshairs are on them. This would allow all players to become more aware of their surroundings and become more about experience. Ye’ve got me vote an’ a bottle o’ rum 👍

  • I agree that the nametags should only be visible whena character model is visible. Being able to see a gamertag when they are underwater an I’m above water is not right.

I agree that they should probably need to be within say 5-10m before gamertag is displayed, but if you can see them with the telescope you should also be able to see them.

I stream also, but I don’t think stream sniping should be a thing Rare should worry about it. Stream sniping is an occupational hazard and if you don’t want it, don’t stream.

Gamertags should be visible, not some weird name you come up with.. if you care that much make a Pirate Smurf! It isn’t like making a new profile will cost you money with gold account sharing.

If anything they should fix the “recent players” section for xbl so I can actually see who I ran into during the game.

I had this great interaction last night with another crew.. and they didn’t show up on recent players so i couldn’t send them a msg letting them know how good of a time we had when it was all done. The only time I’ve been able to is going through the video record feature and manually entering their gamertag from what was visible on screen. Take that away and what do we have to communicate with our opponents or even other friendly crews?

  • @barny64 said in Enemy nametag visibility is an issue:

At the very least you could introduce a filter option to make it so that nametags don't show gamertags, but rather show generic pirate names in their place. This would at least eliminate the stream-sniping problem, but the enemy nametag visibility definitely needs to be addressed as well. It just currently ruins a lot of potential fun/tense moments.

I have very little opinion on this debate either way BUT this last point is something I would like to comment on. We really should have an in game name not your xbox live tag. I want a pirate name not my gamer tag. This seems like such an obvious thing for a game like this that it didn't cross my mind it may not of been a thing on release. I spent ages thinking up cool names only to find i have to be lumpaywk not really very pirate lol.

  • @nomadical13 because it's nice to know who spawn camping you, also if people are using in-game glitches to gain an advantage it is nice to be able to report cheaters

  • Absolutely agree. I love trying to sneakily swim underwater to board a ship but I get spotted so easily it often takes all the fun and suspense out of it. It's just as disappointing when I suddenly notice someone coming towards me from miles off when I really shouldn't have. I want to be on the edge of my seat, looking over my shoulder because there could be surprises at any moment.

Also throwing my captain's hat in for custom pirate names, even if we're just limited to mixing and matching pre-set words and prefixes I'd like the option.

Gamertags in Xbox live titles are always prominently displayed somewhere to support the report/mute/block features of Xbox live. I do agree though that gamertags shouldn't be displayed quite so prominently at a distance... More Tweeking is needed. On one hand, gamertags can not and should not ever be obscured(for the proper function of Xbox live) and on the other hand stealth shouldn't be compromised... It's a tricky balance.

  • Can't agree more !

  • I hate that people can see my name so easily! I was playing with a friend on a sloop today and when we arrived at the outpost, there was another ship parked (which wasn't friendly and was firing cannonballs at us despite my attempt to befriend them). I told my friend to keep sailing on as a distraction, while I jumped off ship with our treasure chest to go sell it. But the enemy players could just see my player name above the water... I wonder how deep you have to dive in order not to be seen. I was able to sell it in time though, so I was lucky!

  • @Puck269 I stream also, but I don’t think stream sniping should be a thing Rare should worry about it. Stream sniping is an occupational hazard and if you don’t want it, don’t stream.

"If you don't want to get sniped, don't stream" is the same nonsensical argument as "If you don't want to get robbed, don't leave the house". You're victim blaming instead of addressing the problem and giving solutions - of which there are many that are achievable.

I'm not going to "just not stream" which is my job, just cos a few people want to stream snipe LOL I'm instead going to offer solutions to the problem and push through.

Please avoid posting in my thread if you're not offering anything worth reading my dude.

  • I gotta say, I'm of the opinion that streamers are [mod edited] who are ruining gaming and no concessions should be made for streamers.

  • I agree completely, the name tags give away the game. It on one hand allows you to see who you are addressing and at the same time allows players to see you coming. My need for stealth mechanics outweigh my need to know who the player actually is. Perhaps a possible solution is point blank range, you can still see their name clearly as well on a ghost ship if the need is to identify someone.

  • @princes-lettuce not deep at all, id say maybe 1-2 meters. Ive seen enemy players swim underwater at my ship. I can see them plain as day just barely under the water, but no nametag. If they come to the surface it then appears.

Also I think many people here are not aware, but nametags are not displayed unless the head or possibly the torso are visible. Ive had players were i could only see a small part of them climb up the ladders, no name tag displayed. Like 1/3 of thier body showing vertically/no visible head

If they want this for immersion, then ask for a toggle UI button. It should hide your HP bar and friendly names as well.

I think the proper analogy would be, if you don’t want to get wet, don’t be a lifeguard.

And if you bothered to read everything else I wrote, I did contribute to “your” conversation.

  • I have slipped aboard many enemy ships during battle & hid until they thought it was safe but only successfully in the confusion of battle. I'm on both sides of this issue. I agree that the names showing is good for new players still learning but once you get the hang of things it's not needed. Maybe once you hit a certain level the names go away & that would be a good compromise for all. I do like the idea of the pirate that kills you popping up so you know who it was & that would help them in becoming notorious bc if they kill you enough or get your swag you'll remember them in future encounters

  • I really hope this suggestion doesn't get overlooked because this super does need to change.

  • what about you only see their nametag if you see their player character?

  • Yes that is all

  • I agree, it's really bad.

  • Big agree on this one. I'd be ok with not seeing enemy names at all.

  • Have my up vote, I agree, it mostly ruins defensive tactics when being pursued

  • I agree. Hide name tags and allow mermaids to be spawned only upon request.

  • Agreed! Might as well carry your lantern around.

  • The other day i watched a guy for a whole minute swim to my ship. Just to have to put him down. It would have been way more exciting if he snuck up on me. Nametags ruin stealth

  • Exactly! I don't want my enemies to see me in the water while I'm approaching their boat when I am trying to keg them.
