Offline "tutorial" for new players? Basics - skippable?

  • So, you've just bought a game for 50+ EUR. You load up as a solo and see your sloop at the dock! You are READY! Then you see a larger ship comming in. You glance at it with stars in your eyes. "Woha, NICE!" Untill this 4 man crew, opens fire from 3 cannons in to your ship. You see your sloop slowly sink at the dock, and wondering "Why.. what have i done to deserve this?" And a few seconds later, you fall to the ground - and respawns at a ghost ship. At this point allready, you might loose a few players.

    My suggestion:
In-game tutorial - Offline, you spawn in, see your sloop - get some arrows and indicators to what merchant is where, how they look like, what the purpose for each merchant is, general tips here and there. "You can pick up supplies from the barrels before you venture out on the sea" etc etc. And then times comes to go onboard your own ship - basic control tips, how to control, turn, do a 180 without going forward, sails, cannons, storage, anchor, food, weapons etc etc. THEN! they are ready to join online. Maybe a small reward for completing the tutorial.. i dunno, like 100 gold (you get a chest, skull or a box of tea to turn in etc) When the tutorial is done, you can return to it later, but you wont get any more rewards.

    Feedback on this plz ^^

  • By the way, im speaking from experience, cuz that was exactly what happened to me when i first loaded the game up.

  • Just learn on the go, man. The main draw of this game is the aspect of discovery. You discover how the sails work and how to use them effectively. You discover how the anchor works and tricks to use to maneuver effectively. You discover everything about this game on your own to get the most out of it.

If it's just spelled out for you in game.. it'll take away the fun. It'll take away the satisfaction of learning about the game.

You think you want this, but it would really be detrimental to the game, even if it was skippable. This game does not need a tutorial.

  • At least have a quick hint system that you can turn off.

  • Pretty sure I had something pop up to run through what the buttons did...

Otherwise, join a crew and ask them! The absence of a tutorial is probably a deliberate attempt to get you communicating with other players.

The load screen does point out that the sloop is high risk and best for experienced players. x

  • I have to say running around with my b******e tight figuring things out was part of the fun, that may not be the case for some. But I did run into a crew that just started and as we sail in they asked we not fire as they were learning the ropes. I said sure no worries but one twitch and its to the ferry you go. I wasn't so lucky. When i started I got shot in the face learning how to banana.

  • It sounds like you went in solo to start. The game warns you that solo is meant to be a more challenging experience and not for new players.

Part of the draw of the game is learning as you go and the blunders you make along the way.

That being said, I think an optional tutorial is something they should have included.
