The Fun of Sea of Thieves

  • Ahoy Everyone!

Over the years that I have been gaming I’ve had the pleasure of playing many games that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, but Sea of Thieves is a type of enjoyment that I have yet to see before. I’ve seen and heard many people ask “where is the fun, where is the content, where are the features?” and I truly believe they may be looking in the wrong places.

The greatest feature, the largest content, and the most fun in Sea of Thieves is you and your friends. This game is a sandbox of sorts where you can make it what you want it to be. Do you want to fight over the help because you want to explore Plunder Valley and your friend wants to go to Discovery ridge? Sure play a game, maybe drop the anchor until they get off the helm! ( @KHARITES @II-Mikez-II ) Do you want to abandon your friend on an island and laugh as you sail away from them? Go for it! Does your friend hate the sound of the bell ringing? Go and spam the bell for 10 minutes and make’em cry! Sea of Thieves is the game that you and your friends can laugh and have a great time and not have accomplished anything in the game.

There was one time that stands out above any other when it comes to this for me. Myself @WyMeRz, @KattTruewalker, @lizalaroo, @Pikaaroon, and @DUNCS all managed to meet up at an outpost together on afternoon, but we didn’t go hunting other pirates or treasure, we actually didn’t leave that outpost at all! We just started telling stories of our adventures on the seas, we played music and improved more musical sounds by jumping and clanging our shovels into the wooden docks. We even had a light show courtesy of the lanterns flickering on and off to give that rave atmosphere. We then had a water fight on the beach and quickly proceeded to turn that into a pile throwing contest! For an hour and a half, we didn’t leave the island, we stayed there and had an absolute blast because we realized that is what this game is all about.

You are just as much a part of this game as the skeletons, sharks, chickens, and exploding barrels are. You are going to make your own adventures and tell your own stories of the people that you’ve sailed with and fought against! The only thing you have to do is be open to having fun, laughing with your crew, and just being the pirate you are!

I have had the pleasure of meeting so many different amazing pirates out on the seas from my very first voyage with @xDILLIGAFx1974, @KattTruewalker, and @lizalaroo to my most recent ones with my closest friends. If managed to randomly get crewed with many amazing people, some I recognized, some I’ve never seen and the amount of different goals we’ve accomplished are not defined by the quests in the game. I have also crewed with those that are maybe a little less than pleasant, but there’s a quit button for a reason and quickly found a crew more to my liking. Cherish the memories that this game creates just as much as the memories you create outside the game.

I will close this off by leaving you all with a thought. If you’re someone that enjoys driving, it’s not because your car takes you places, it’s because of the places you decide to go and the people you decide to go with. Let this translate into how you play the game, don’t let the game tell you where to go, you decide and go wherever you want!

    Cheers and thanks for reading!

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi
Very eloquent post Rmac, & it really does bring to light what a lot of the new influx of players are missing.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi this is the best post I've seen on this forum since i joined after E3 last year. This is why i want the game. I don't want it for some story or final boss battle or even to collect things in game. I want it for to play with my friends and not have to do anything. I missed the last 3 months of tech alpha sessions due to not having time. The first thing i did when i logged into the beta was sit. I sat for 2 hours on the outpost and just listened. Listened to the waves, the wind, the thunder and lightning as the storm came over the outpost. I just sat there thinking how good it felt to be back and how amazing Rare did with the sounds for the game. I also watched some streamers i follow from a different game play for the first time and just have fun and get drunk and play for 12 hours. This is a game that I'll always come back to with my friends. I love the feeling of sailing the ships Rare has made and i hope that this game doesn't just turn into a grief game or turn around and be called a dead game 2 months after release. Rare has worked to hard for that to happen. Also @dhg-ixxrmacxxi if i ever got the chance to sail with you I'd be honored.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Well as much as I love the game(a lot), sandboxes or simulators just aren't worth 60€. Yeah it's fun, yeah I'll have a laugh but not for 60€. At this point I'd pay no more than 30€ for it and even that is because I love it, I can totally see why peeps are a little dissapointed. AAA games aren't meant to be sandboxes but should be full of 100s of hours of content and playtime.
I love the game, I've made many friends but that doesn't change the fact that they need to add atleast twice as much content or SoT will be another No Man's Sky or Call of Duty.

  • Friends or fellow ship mates are so crucial to enjoy this game that I start every session with question to everybody if their mics are working and if they can communicate using voice. If not I'm wishing them good luck and leave session.
Unfortunately it is hit or miss more often than not I have to leave.

  • Nice writeup @dhg-ixxrmacxxi :) I'm sure you know I 100% agree with the sentiment of the post and couldn't have put it better myself.

It's been an amazing year meeting some extraordinary pirates out at sea and IRL!

We may eventually get to sail together one day, who knows? That is if you want to.

  • @nuclear-duke37 that’s fine to feel like that. The game isn’t for everyone and if you don’t feel its worth the money, you don’t have to buy it. :)

    Thanks @DHG-IXxRMACxXI for posting :)

  • @lizalaroo It's not the matter of me wanting to buy it or not tho. It's the matter of me not wanting to see another great potential go straight into the garbage bin.

  • @nuclear-duke37 it’s all about our personal opinion though isn’t it? You think it might take a dive and I don’t lol. We all have different expectations of the game. Personally I am happy with what we have atm and we know some of what will be in the released version, but not all.
Sea of Thieves’ has always been a ‘show not tell’ kind of game with content only released when Rare are happy it works. As we will have content added after the game’s release and in to 2019 at least, there’s still a ton of stuff to come. I’m in it for the long haul :D

    Agreed.

Trying to enjoy my driving skills while getting smacked by a Galleon at my left, a Sloop at my back, a Fort at my right and a Storm above and below with 2 "crying" chests on my Sloop "trunk" is funnily terrifying ;)
(and those pesky rocks are everywhere!!!)

  • @koshdukai this made me immediately remember all the times that @KnightX13 has sailed us directly into a rock in the middle of the ocean! He is a great helmsman, at times at least!

@Nuclear-Duke37 I do see where you’re coming from forsure, and I do believe it definitely does come down to perspective in this case. For myself it’s the good times with friends this game allows be to have that makes it worth the $80 I’m spending on it. I will gladly go spend a few hundred dollars on a ski trip with my friends, but I wouldn’t spend it if I was going alone, if you know what I mean there.

@SpiderMonkey484 Hey mate I really appreciate that! If you ever see me online and want to go for a sail don’t hesitate to ask I may just be needing more great times!

  • @DHG-IXxRMACxXI

Completely agree with you on these points. Some of the most fun I've had in Sea of Thieves was over laughter and some sort of craziness in game.

This is a very, VERY different kind of game that I personally haven't seen the likes of before.

I'm looking forward to many more adventures in the near future with everyone - really hoping I get to sail with more of the Deckhands soon!

  • Beautifully put, @DHG-IXxRMACxXI

If there is one thing One Piece has taught me after all this time, it's not about getting to the destination but all the good times in-between with your crew, and the bonds and friendships you make along the way, however unlikely they might be!

  • @Musicmee The last year alone (actually I just hit my 1yr anniversary with the community) has been very special indeed, not just in game but in the forums and clubs too! Have we never sailed yet?? I honestly haven’t been sailing much recently myself, but trying to get on more!

@Armament-Jay Jay we certainly will have to have an adventure or two one of these days! I’ve always loved your videos and look forward for the next ones! (Hurry up already!)

@Psych0-KnIghTrO I love that saying, and it goes along with the saying “it’s not what you do that people remember, but how you made them feel that they will remember forever”.

  • Well said @dhg-ixxrmacxxi ! You sum up the exact experience and fun I get out of SoT. Though I haven't had the chance to sail with you yet mate, knowing we both view the game the same way let's me know it'd be a blast.
For me, it's not about content or quests or achievements... It's the adventure I'm after, and sharing that with my crew!
It's about doing everything that everyone wants to do or try that day, it's about the fun!

I hope those that l**t after spoon fed content read your post and can breath it in, like you said, the content is the adventure shared with friends.

Great post Rmac, and if you want to, add my gamertag, I'd like for a lot of us ol'salty CREWmunity members to always sail together!
I'm dying to catch many of you guys online sometime, we've read each other's words in the forum for so long it feels like a friendship now.

  • @DHG-IXxRMACxXI I only sail into rocks or islands when my crew don't tell me there is a rock in front of me until it is too late, or don't drop anchor when told the first time.

Usually this is when they are too busy either dancing on the helm or sitting and staring at me. ;)

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Part of this games draw is the adventures you have. But you have to know that a video game cannot only be about the adventure. Using your own analogy, you drive somewhere to be rewarded by the destination. Either you're traveling there for the view, or you're traveling there for an activity. There's a reward waiting for you at end. And yes, some people do just travel for the hell of it, but they still achieve rewards by exploring new places and experiencing new things. You are being rewarded by gaining something of value to you personally.

SoT, you gain nothing of personal worth to your character. There has to be more to a video game than just a feeling, that is the point I am trying to make. Sure, the feeling is great! I can respect that, but we're not talking about real life here. We are all playing a video game, lets keep that in mind. And we all play a video game to escape and become something new. And you currently cannot become something in Sea of Thieves because there is no sense of ownership or value. Your character isn't your own, your ship isn't yours, your rewards are not important, and your left with nothing but the adventure you've had.

Sure, I have had a blast with friends in this game, I don't think that needs to go unnoticed and is certainly part of the puzzle to making a successful game. But does that mean I am satisfied with the game in its current form? Nope, not at all. There is more to a puzzle than just 1 piece, it all has to come together at some point.

  • @thorhammer3 I would be glad to sail with another like-minded Pirate, we may not become the most feared or wealthy pirates, but we would become legends in our own ranks!

@KnightX13 I do not block the view of the helmsman, never done it, all lies! I even raised the sails a bit for you so you could see and this is the treatment I get? Excuses, Excuses!

@Ethnine You’re precisely right, games aren’t solely about the social aspect or we’d all be outside on our bikes like in the 90s. It’s a hard balance, I personally play PUBG and CoD with my friends, but more and more I find myself not enjoying the game, but enjoying winning. It’s a weird feeling, arguably most noticible in the EA Sports franchises as I tend to rage most when I lose there, it’s no fun, but I’m overjoyed whenever I manage to win. This is, to a degree, what the reward that you’re talking about is for me, the reward of winning. Sure in SoT there is not a overwhelming amount of rewards coming from the content in the game other than the social aspect, but there’s still enough in there right now for me to still get enough enjoyment to purchase it for the price it’s at.

I’m not in any way saying you’re wrong, as these are all opinions here and opinions are very hard to call wrong as they’re perspective based. Side Note, I do love to travel, but I have never travelled alone

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Aye Aye mate i will

  • wipes tears

  • Well this post probably made a lot of players cancel their pre-orders.. :D

  • @crusaderjesus said in The Fun of Sea of Thieves:

Well this post probably made a lot of players cancel their pre-orders.. :D

If I may ask, why do you feel that would be mate?

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Firstly you are a deckhand so you are somewhat connected to Rare. Players might take it as some kind of incognito statement from Rare itself.

Secondly this post feels like the interview with Sean Murray when he said basically something like this (shortly before the release of the game after he and his team hyped it to heavens) "I'm afraid that players are coming into our game with big expectations" (I don't want to offend you by compering you to Sean Murray or anything like this - no offence). It just feels like this post is supposed to water down the hype about the game, which has been spreading like crazy, same as Sean Murray tried to do.

(For everyone who would like to bash me for this - I'm not comparing this game in any way to No man's sky, I just said what this post feels like to me, thanks)

  • @crusaderjesus You’re right and trust me when I say that in no way was this thread or post made with the prior knowledge or discussion with anyone at Rare, this is solely my opinion as a gamer, and sure my position as a Deckhand may effect the people that I play with as they see me differently, this is purely my personal opinion.

I don’t take offense to that at all as I can see where your comparison is coming from. I’m not trying to reduce the hype of the game in any way, I know there are going to be many more amazing features coming to this game over the coming months and even years! I am actually trying to do the opposite and offerring ways to bring more hype to the game! For me everything is about making the most out what you’re given and I feel like we’re given a lot to work with to make lasting memories within the game.

Not knocking you in any way, I actually completely see your point of view and hope that I have assured you that in no way is this coming from anyone at Rare.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi Consider me assured.

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi - Could not agree more! This game has been a platform for so many stories already and I've made life long friends here too.

That stream we did together was awesome and a great example of everything you've mentioned!
My own story of meeting @KHARITES also comes to mind.

I had decided to use an LFG for the first time and Khari was looking for a group so I jumped in. We had a right laugh trying to figure out the E3 global competition at the time for the 5 Mythical Chests! Khari then revealed that she knew where they spawned already and heard that they respawn continuously so off we went!

After a while our 2 other crew mates had to leave so it was just me and Khari left. We went off to grab the 5 Mythical Chests from Mermaids Hideaway and our newly matchmade crew had decided to leave without us! So we were stranded on the little beach with 5 valuable chests!
So we decided to stay and try to attract other ships so we could give the chests away.. We never did manage to give those chests away but we chilled on that island for ages chatting and having a laugh and we've been sailing together ever since. That little beach on Mermaids Hideaway has also now been dubbed "Our Beach" and holds a ton of sentimental value to me.

Little things like that are what this game is really about to me.

Also, as an aside.. That bell ring will ALWAYS annoy me.. The ring echoes through me! @KHARITES even suggested to @ShipItChris that they should introduce a handheld bell to the inventory! Please do everything in your power to never let this happen!

  • ... After all, aren't we playing a game to have a good time with friends anyway? Well put!

  • @bloodshotbeast I am playing a game to earn meaningful rewards and play with my friends? I fail to see why its so bad to ask for both? Most games you can have both, why should this game be given the exception to this?

  • @dhg-ixxrmacxxi This is a perfect inside to what a large group of Founders and Pioneers love about this game.
The stream session was really a fun time. It is things like this that really makes me want to play more.
I have met so many people on SoT and have become friends with them I honestly don’t know how @II-Mikez-II puts up with me sometimes. We have had sessions to where I’m in tears laughing so hard and very few to where we would fight attacking crews most of the session. But anytime @DHG-IXxRMACxXI if you or anyone who wants to have fun sees us online. I’m Game! Let’s Do This!!

Also @ShipItChris, @khaleesibot, @Deckhands and @ who needs to see this.
Can I please please please have a bell to keep on my character to chase @II-Mikez-II ? I am sure @DHG-IXxRMACxXI would agree that I really need that.
If you need another excuse you can also use it to signal your crew while on an island.
Example: Help then find where you are. If you see a ship that your crew mate guarding the ship does not see.

  • @ethnine Asking for both is fine. We all just need to keep in mind that this is a Beta. This is only a small percentage of what the full game will have to offer. Let's just trust that there will be plenty of rewards to earn in the full game. If not, I'm sure there will be a lot of forum talk about it then.

  • @bloodshotbeast I have yet to see ship customization, fishing or mini-games, world bosses/raids, any forms of ship ownership, nor ship diversity (unless they really call the 2 ships in the game a "variety a of ships."), I have yet to see any crew/party management system in-game, or any additional melee weapons varieties. All of these things, and more, are what Rare has hinted at for years, but I have not seen any of it in the game, nor do I know if its still even planned for the games final release.

  • @kharites said in The Fun of Sea of Thieves:

    You are pure evil..

  • @DHG-IXxRMACxXI

Honestly it is quite fun just doing stupid stuff for the sake of it or doing stupid stuff to tell others for the fame and glory of it. I can't think of a game that promotes such enthusiasm for stories and lore crafted by players.

This exact players build the world game mentality is why I spent the first 30 straight hours of the Beta sailing on the Ferry of the Damned. To carve my own Legend into the world and set me apart from all others and then boast about it as a pirate should!

    ~Captain Maximillian Zeus:
The Damned Rider of the Ferry

  • @ethnine said in The Fun of Sea of Thieves:

I am playing a game to earn meaningful rewards

Really, no reward in a game is more or less meaningful than another. A sword that gave you the ability to drop the anchor on any ship you could see is no more meaningful than a pair of in-game socks that have a kitty skull & crossbones. You assign the meaning.
I understand that there are things you think that should be in game that arte not in the game. That's totally fine. That's why we are testing, and providing feedback. But at the end of the day the game you want to play may not be the game that they are making. So, you have to decide if you like the game they are making enough to buy it and play it, or if you don't. No one can make that decision for you.
All I know is that I agreed with everything that @DHG-IXxRMACxXI said. For me, right now, the game is worth buying. Do I want more stuff in it? Of course. Do I need it to fill your definition of "meaningful"? No, that is not something I need. If there is a hard to get hat in the world that I like, it is meaningful solely because I want it. I play games for my enjoyment, and I really really enjoy this game. I've made new friends. I've reconnected with old friends. I've won and I've lost and I've had narrow escapes and I've almost gotten away. I've been sunk, got on board the attacking ship, and instead of fighting spent the next half hour laughing with them about how the battle went. But the biggest thing is that even after playing well over 100 hours in the last six months I still can't wait until I get to play it again. And they haven't even added all of the "content" yet.
In the end, it may not be enough for you. But it is enough for a lot of other people.

  • @erikinthebakery Suggesting to another community member that this game might not be for them just because they suggest the addition of content that goes against what YOU think will be in the game is about as stupid and insulting as it comes. Everything I suggested, or believe to be in the game, are things Rare themselves have suggested or said would be in the game. I didn't just come up with some crazy ideas one day and think to myself "I'll force my ideas on this gaming community!"

Can you tell us more about the in-game progression? I’d imagine you start with a small ship and work from there.
"You can imagine yourself as a penniless pirate dressed in rags and you want to become a pirate legend in fine clothing and awesome weaponry and cool equipment with the best ship. We have a progression system."

    Including ship customisation?
    "Yes."

With missions and objectives to earn in-game currency to buy all of it?
"Yeah. You get treasure and you want the loot, you’ll want to spend it. Personal progressions are around you and also on weapons and objects that you can carry. Everyone wants to own a ship or ships and make it look like they want it to look cool. These customizations aren’t just aesthetics but functional too. So a larger sail that looks cool will also makes your ship move quicker too."

But is that the sort of thing that’s going to be in the game straight away or in two years’ time?
"And it’s that core loop of then being able to earn that treasure and take it back to port and bank it. Those are the core kind of elements for me, but there are also rewards for exploration. Or things for players to do as they explore that world. Because at the moment you just can amble around here but there’s not much there. There’s not any resources to gather, there’s no wood to chop down…"

Chapman doesn’t get into the specifics of this all too much, but makes mention of NPC-manned ports with ship merchants and quest givers, as well as islands peppered with buried treasure and stalked by skeletons or the like. He also mentions “safe zone outposts” - presumably those ports will make up some or all of these - where players will be able to wield swords and show off their in-game wealth, but seemingly not be able to go full PvP on strangers’ booties or booty (I promise this is the only time I’ll make that joke).

    Is there customisation?
Oh, yes. In the course of the presentation, Chapman mentions (ahem):

    • Different classes of ship

    • Character clothing made out of vanquished enemies (for instance, a Kraken tooth hat)

    • Character augmentations (e.g. hooks for hands, a peg leg made of an old blunderbuss)

    • Ship upgrades (cannon types, reinforced hulls or upgraded paddles)

    • Figureheads

    • Sail designs

    • Captain’s cabin designs

    • Ship colour (Black Pearl ahooooy)

Despite offering players a bit of variety, we ask whether that’s really a true role-playing experience. Chapman pauses and thinks for a moment, before revealing what he really wants to bring to the game:

“We’re working on the idea of players being able to become a bounty hunter.

    https://gamerant.com/sea-of-thieves-e3-2016-preview/

"Additionally, there will be missions that can be secured and completed for treasure, which can then be spent on upgrading a player’s boat. According to Rare, this will be the meat of the game, as players continuously search for treasure and make their own legendary tales for others to talk about amongst one another. Whether taking down a beastly kraken, sinking an armada of ships, or teaming up to recover buried treasure, there will be much more to do than lob cannon balls at passersby. While that will hold true in the final product, it’s not something that was made playable to the masses during E3."

My point is Rare has created this idea that there's so much more to their game from the very beginning, but we've seen so little of it. And all I am asking is that they hold up their end of the deal and provide us with the content they themselves have said will be part of the this title. If that warrants me being told that this game isn't for me, then I find myself being extremely confused.
