3rd person

  • Hi I bought the game and by the videos I totally got there was a 3rd person view and a vanity mode.... Please tell me there will be also a third person view... because apart from the delight of looking at the ship crushing on waves from any angle or our customized pg... I also suffer from motion sickness and 3rd view helps me to relief that from too much time in 1st view only.... also We aren't talking if an fps where ppl lament advantages or the like ... I would like to see my char and find more immersive as experience 3rd view. .

  • As for now i don´t think they will implement 3rd person, I recall watching a video where a developer stated the reasoning behind their choice of going with first person view. Can´t really remember what he said though.

  • @n-a-ii-m-a Ahoy!

There will be a few ways to view your character in 3rd person for short periods of time, but the majority of the game will be played in first person view.

  • @n-a-ii-m-a I too would like to see 3rd person and/or different camera angles (GTA style camera shuffle).

  • @rufustheblakman yeh gta style would be great I don't get the need to force 1st person view only if there are no special advantages in playing 3rd and 1st ... let people choose what they like as in skyrim would be best.... some games like far cry are impossible for me to play couse of first person only that causes me heavy nausea... so I really hope devs take into consideration to allow choice to allow also ppl with moriobsickness to play .... and I guess on wavy seas might be a thing ...
Do devs read that kind of feedback?

  • In games which involve PvP, it's usually a bad idea to provide both 3rd person and first person views unless you split the playerbase into different server clusters. Unless you have giant player numbers like PUBG or DayZ, that is usually a bad choice.

3rd person camera lets players see around certain obstacles which can be unfair in combat, but there are also scenarios where a 3rd person camera can make it harder for you to see important things quickly. One of the major problems with a game like Sea of Thieves is that the areas below deck or in caves can be very critical to the game and 3rd person cameras can quickly be frustrating in tight spaces like that. Good design might suggest automatically switching into first person in these areas, but then you need triggers in the world or automatic detection and then you have a game where it's hard to get immersed due to the constant camera switching.

Another potential problem with a 3rd person camera is all the swaying of the ship and when you think of the end of a long stick being more wobbly than the end you're holding, you can imagine that a camera farther away from your character can amplify this effect if not done well. Camera smoothing can help a lot. Gestures also seem to work ok here, because you don't control your character or move around while doing so. Camera switching isn't always bad when done right and situationally, but Sea of Thieves really is optimal with a first person camera as far as I can tell.

One concern which already exists in the game, is that if you do a gesture like a dance, it goes into a 3rd person camera and that can potentially be used to gain a view advantage over an opponent if you're near an obstacle like a rock. I expect they have decided that the delay and disarming involved with gestures is enough of a nerf here to make it acceptable.

There are a couple of possibilities that might add to the game:

    • As you climb up the mast, the camera could slowly shift into a 3rd person view. When you aim the camera towards the horizon, it would be closer in towards your character, but if you aim down then the camera would increase the distance from your character so that the already impressive view when looking down from the nest gets to be seen from an even higher vantage point than the top of the mast. Using the telescope would shift into first person view. An option would be available in the settings to disable this feature, but to some people this might provide an extra reason to climb up the mast and many screenshots might be taken from there. Performance can be effected in scenarios like this, but would also have to make sure this could be done in a way that doesn't make people sick with the swaying mast. Perhaps the camera would smooth itself around a nest position averaged over time and provide a sort of steady-cam effect.
    • There could be special weapons that negate some of the advantage you would get from a 3rd person view in ranged combat, I provided a dagger example in another thread where a dagger might do less damage from the front and only normal damage from behind, but would also make your footsteps harder to hear. For a sneaky playstyle, 3rd person view can be very helpful as it lets you see around corners to keep an obstacle between you and an enemy you're hiding from. So if there was a nerfed weapon that offered a 3rd person view by default, with an option to turn off 3rd person view in certain weapons, maybe that would work.
    • Similar to the mast, there may be islands that have spots at the top of mountains that provide a great view which could potentially switch to a 3rd person view either automatically or when you interact with something which allows you to appreciate the surrounding scenery more. In a game like Guild Wars 2, this was an action you would do and you would lose control of your character while the camera changed, but since Sea of Thieves has open world PvP you would need to retain control of your character. Perhaps as soon as you switch to a pistol or swing your sword it would automatically switch back to first person.
    • I often feel that when you are climbing up the ladders on the sides of ships, you are at a severe disadvantage and there may be some gameplay value in at least considering a 3rd person view while on the ladder. You can't see much on the ladder and as you reach the top, it's hard to tell if you're about to get killed for free by someone waiting at the top. If someone was in the lookout nest, perhaps they could keep an eye on people heading for the ladders or even climbing up, but anyone directly on deck should have to look over the side. There are also scenarios where you might simply hang onto an enemy ship's side ladder, but not go all the way to the top. It is a "stow-away" method from the outside of the ship. In this scenario, staring at the side of the ship can be very uninteresting, so there is another potential benefit for a 3rd person camera there.
    • After you level up, collect a special upgrade or cosmetic improvement, there might be value in having a 3rd person view temporarily as an option. Think of Link in Zelda where you get a new item like a Triforce, it gets raised above your head, special notice is taken and the area around you might glow.

Whether more 3rd person scenarios are added to the game or not, I do think having an option to disable 3rd person views would be nice. Even for the dances and gestures, I would like to be able to stay in first person if I want to maximize immersion.

  • @crache
There are hundreds of pvp games with third person view as well as first or evenjust third person ...And I do not see the disadvantages you list , because this is not a fps game , its based also most on open space and not crawlspace and the idea of peek around the corner is non exhistant.

Also the best fps weapon you will have is a musket or a flintgun , wich nullifies any peekaboo effect of a third person over a first person.

Also Everyone would get the choice.

    The advantages would be :

    • No Motion sickness for people suffering from it , opening the game to a wider audience.
With all the swaying of the ship with first person some people might feel sick very soon and be conditioned in health.
    • Vanity mode to look at your own character and see all the customization done on it with personal gratification.
    • Cinematic experience and enjoyment of the game by beeing able to see out of the 1st person view and check the ships and action from multiple angles.
    • Better imersion in the mood and toon look by looking at a cartoon and not a constricted view.
    • Choice is always preferable to constriction , people will have the possibility to either choice to use first or third person just like in Skyrim so everyone will be satisfied and not feeel forced wich will open a major customer audience as well.
    • Realism , despite some people think that first view is more realistic it is not, because it lacks all the 180 view arch and its limited to a straight tunnel vision that is not happening in real life , it also misses the perception awarness gived by a wider and corner vision that instead would be granted with a 3rd view option. Sure you get an even larger area , but it helps feeling not constrained and more tothe imersionand appreciation of the environment without sensible advantages in combat or any way.
  • There has been no indication of 3rd person being a thing in Sea of Thieves.

Honestly I hope it stays that way. Having both 3rd and 1st person gives the 3rd person player an advantage over the person playing in 1st person. Not a fan of that and judging by what RARE has said they aren't either.

  • @n-a-ii-m-a
How can you say 3rd person is more realistic then 1st person??
Do you see yourself through someone else's eyes??

I understand how important motion sickness is to you and that you want to defend this strongly, but the advantages exist. You don't even need a musket or flintgun for it to be an issue, you can simply have a sword. Not everyone is skilled enough to make good use of these advantages, but those who are skilled can create a large advantage in certain scenarios.

We agree that there are some nice benefits to a 3rd person camera, but in Sea of Thieves there are also a number of downsides that may not apply to other games. Perhaps they will find some way to include it, but if not, it makes sense. To me, immersion matters the most and first person offers that in a way that 3rd person struggles with.

There are some things you can try if you have motion sickness. See if a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor helps (as I know people who get sick on a 16:9 display yet are fine on 4:3), then also try to adjust the Field of View setting in a game that supports it. We can only hope that Sea of Thieves supports a Field of View setting. It's more likely on PC, but I need FoV adjustment on console since I don't use it in a livingroom.

  • @n-a-ii-m-a I am also a huge fan of 3rd person view in games, being a huge mmorpg player and being able to see my character just feels just that bit more immersive, or at least having the choice of view.

There have been several discussions around this but you might be interested in reading Mike's post on this here -

  • @crache I don't see any of the downsides u think there are, How many times you will be in closed areas with corridors and rooms where u could peek around ? This is an open terrain game based on sea travels and sea fights on ships ...
Considering that the ships also sway up and down on waves this places a severe condition on first person view only constriction to people that are having motion sickness.

There is better value in allowing all players to play the game as they like , since its a fun game and not a competitive only one , rather than limiting to a selection of people and keeping out the ones with motion sickness.

that said apart the health issues there are many advantages on 3rd person view as listed in my previous post.

Tunnel box vision that isn't realistic and removes all the perception awarness we have in real live with peripherical vision .
Also it does have any sense to speak of realism in a game with Toon graphics? If I was playing in a "realistic" setting perhaps ... but in a cartoon I expect to see cartoon style and feel more immersed to see my character as the hero in a way .

  • it'll be interesting to see if this game triggers sea-sickness (if it hasn't already?).

that being said, the usual cure for sea-sickness is to look at the horizon (or any focal point that is constant and not moving)

  • @n-a-ii-m-a
Maybe Rare can add some stabilization for your issue. I'm not sure if that would put the majority at a disadvantage though. It would be less immersive not to get sea sick though xD. I know what your saying though because I felt a little that way just watching lets plays. It's didn't have that strong effect on me though and I had watched quite a few episodes xD.

  • Wow I too like the OP here actually pre-ordered and paid for a game whose videos on the Xbox clearly make it appear like it's a third person game.... I too, like the OP, get straight up sick, my head gets a near-migraine from first person games, ive struggled for yrs and felt left out of every FPS game that I might otherwise enjoy.... year after year I try... for some odd reason that maybe the devs understand better than I do, there is only one first person game that doesn't have this effect, and that is specifically (and I do mean VERY specifically.. (but hell if I know why...) the call of duty games that were made by infinity ward don't give a the headache... even simply going to the other near exact copy (treyarch's) leave me with the headache.. - I don't know what infinity wards magic formula is and I feel like I shouldn't have to... I respect the opinions and stated reasons from the devs regarding their reasoning... but imo, it's all bull... (not that they are lying, I mean simply the immersion, feeling "connected to ur character," all of the psychological things that are imagined are bills I'm sorry... I get invested in characters in movies becuz I can see them, I can relate to them, most of the time seeing thru a protagonist's eyes doesn't "LITERALLY" mean seeing thru their eyes, I wager even without the notion sickness I'd never feel as connected to a character I see while controlling, see my customizations while he does every single move, knowing I chose the exact shade of red on his hood..., - heck I've also seen devs say they didn't give a character a voice in a single player game cuz they want u to feel like u are the character... (id consult a psychologist to see if these perceived effects are really taking place becuz I always relate to character better even when he's given a name and personality and voice... - (sidetracked there, and sorry for rambling now,) but I'm stuck looking at a game that to most players who have been involved with since day one probably feel like it's fine the way it is when comes to first/third person, would argue against it, (I agree that there is somewhat a slight balancing issue with people playing first person against someone playing third though, that's obvious... I wasn't calling BS on that...) maybe something like up close combat forces a switch, idk... I play even skyrim or fallout (like most with my headache or motion sickness issues) in 3rd person, while flipping to first a brief few secs to pick something up or aim or attack in some cases... - the difference between that and no option for 3rd person would mean I never would have enjoyed these games... ever... I'd never know them..

    • maybe it's hard for people thinking strictly from the standpoints the devs are to understand why it's such a dealbreaker fpr some, but it simply is... an absolute deal breaker... first thing I do is check to see if a game is 3rd person... (which I thought I did by watching the trailer, what's with that? If u know it looks better like that, to why isn't it like that?? (I mean i can't understand that video's existence at all... the one that gave me the green light to click preorder... I have to get a refund now but it's not cuz I don't wanna play and pillage and plunder with all y'all!!!! It's cuz my sea-legs IRL can't handle the simulation, but when I'm on a real boat in fine, so my IRL sea legs shouldn't affect my pirating with virtual ones!! (Maybe if I just sucked regardless of perspective, then that's different!) Lol.. but I DIGRESS, sorry for the rant, but I want to COMPLETELY JUST ADD my small voice and vote to idea that somehow allowing 3rd person will get u more sales of ur game, if that's the one thing that helps to implement it, keep that easy truth in mind!! Lol.. (And don't take away from those who prefer first person in any way, plz...) thank you..
  • Need 3rd person in the game....10 min into this s**t and I wanna hurl! Good thing I tried it out on Xbox Pass for free....delete. There are several PVP games that have 3rd person, reasons for it not having the option are total BS. Game looks fun, but unfortunately can't do it.

  • I agree with having a 3rd person view - that is what made Assassins Creed Black Flag so awesome on the seas - to see your ship and crew from a 3rd person view was really cool. I think being able to see your customization after adding cool clothing and accessories would be awesome too! I think having the option would allow those who prefer it to switch while not taking away from those who love the first person view experience.

  • The other day I was playing with a friend on a sloop , we run into a Storm , I had to quit game because I was feeling sick for motionsickness.

this is an arcade game, its not a competitive one , I really do not stand that you can't go third person for some nonsense decision of gameplay !

  • @gl2gz1 Totally agree, I love skyrim and bethesda games, but if they didn't have third person I wouln't have been able to play them.

  • @n-a-ii-m-a it is competitive there's just not a scoreboard

  • @crash4654 No its just an arcade game, there is nothing seriously competitive here, if you feel so good luck enjoying the "competition".

  • @n-a-ii-m-a you haven't come across any PvP centered pirates yet have you...

  • It would take some of the fun out of the game (like suddenly being a chased by a shark doesn't become so sudden in 3rd person), but I definetly wouldn't mind it either.

At the very least I'd like to see a "walking" emote for sheer vanity purposes.

  • @crash4654 Me and Friends have sinked every ship met and never happened to have a "Peek" behind a corner situation that could justify a first person only , yet its more immersive third person rather than first only.

  • @n-a-ii-m-a id say its more immersive in first person.

  • Adjust field of view. That usually helps a bit with motion sickness

  • @crache not going to quote your wall of text nor did i read it all just saying,

Another potential problem with a 3rd person camera is all the swaying of the ship and when you think of the end of a long stick being more wobbly than the end you're holding, you can imagine that a camera farther away from your character can amplify this effect if not done well.

do you even played a game in 3rd person? swaying?, the reason why people play in that mode is because there is no swaying , there is no reason to add that to the 3rd person mode.

and most of your other suggestions are wrong as well imo.
just look at Battlefront 2 "yea i went there" that's a shooter with 1st person and 3rd person mode and people are just fine with that there because they have a choice in what mode they play!

i hate people, who hate change because this is why you made that wall of text, you hate and fear change! your argument don't hold water at all

i would love to see a 3rd person mode in this game !

  • Guys! No one says it should be 3rd Person INSTEAD of 1st. So why criticising those who feel more comfortable with 3rd P? Let people choose their preferred point of view. And if anyone thinks, 3rd P gives the edge in pvp...well no one forces you to play 1st Person.

  • The game would be a whole different and BETTER experience if it offered a 3rd person view. I mean if there are those that prefer 1st person then fine but they should at the very least offer both perspectives for this to be the huge success they were hoping for.

In 1st person, I feel dizzy all the time and spend more time concentrating on trying to spin and spin to find the bad guys that I can hear coming for me.
On the ship when I need to run back and forth to get the water from the hull, I cannot get up the stairs fast enough cause I keep missing the first step and have to spin around and go back again.

    PLEASE BRING 3RD PERSON VIEW!!!
