Why is Sea of Thieves 69,99 Euros (Europe) but only 59,99 Dollars (US) (Microsoft Store)

  • Hello,
I noticed the price difference on the Microsoft Store and I 'd like to know ,from a dev if possible, about the price difference.

    Thank you in advance.

  • I agree i have the same problem because i live in europe and the difference in value of the game is unfair between the american microsoft store and the european.

  • Could this be a VAT/tax issue?

Could someone from one of the US states that have a tax on digital goods let us know which price they see?

  • ➪ same topic but no comment from any devs...
But i would like to know aswell - because:

    • 59,99$ = 49.97709 €
    • 69,99€ = 84.0124965 $ (as of 10.jan.18)

that is a 20,01€ difference, or a difference of $24,02.... and don't get me started on calculating $99.95 AUD :D

    Bottom line: seems unfair ¦¬]

Yes , that seems unfair , but the difference in price comes from the European Union Taxlaw and Rare nor Microsoft have any say in this matter ...So it's the European Union Tax law who's to blame and not Rare company.

I am not blaming anyone. I just want to know about the difference. Also, how can all the other companies publish their games with the same cost (US and Europe).

  • @clumsy-george i dont think that is the case because i have bought a lot of games and its the first time i see such a big difference in game. Also i dont think its a game that can justify a 70 euro price when exclusive games (in ps4 for example) have 60 euros price or lower in physical form(case dvd i mean).

  • 21 percent?? My God that's horrible. $59.99 is the standard price tag for almost every single game that is released in the United States. Why the EU has it so much higher is beyond me. Definitely some law getting in the way there.

  • But other games are 59,99 euros (EU) and that is my main problem here. Why such a difference? We need an explanation from a developer or a community manger. Also, as far as I know Sea of Thieves is not a AAA title.

sorry, this is a AAA title
    :)

Everybody has the same pricing as far as I can see in my store. So stop lashing.

If you don't like it you can simply order it from US amazon or change your store region.

  • @Lucky-Monkee
I just asked for an explanation in the price difference from someone that knows. I am not lashing anyone. If I offended you somehow I am sorry.

  • Standart for AAA-Title is 59,99€. I also would know, why they want 70€. I mean sure, there are actually 350.000 Insiders. If everyone of the Insiders would buy the game, that would be about 25.000.000€. But 69,99€ is to much in my Opinion. 49,99€ or 59,99€ would be okay for me.

  • @allegingcone5 might be a mix of +VAT with commercial decisions that may support that most of Europeans can and will pay 70€ for this game :P

Maybe started with "ok, it'll be 59.99 worldwide!" and each store took that number and "converted" to each currency as-is (59.99USD ?=? 59.99EUR) which then, ends up getting VAT on top.

Average VAT is around 21% (min: Switzerland=8%; Hungary=27%) so that would make it around 72.50EUR ...then, maybe, someone reminded someone that 59.99EUR was already crazy higher than 59.99USD so someone decided that 69.99EUR should be enough.

    ...just wild theories :)

  • Maybe EU government doesnt like pirates? lol

  • I blame Brexit lol

  • Amazon Prime - 47.99 for hard copy with guaranteed delivery on release day. Win.
As far as the original question, Sorry, can't help you there.

  • Yes 49 euros for euro is the right price not 69 euros

  • All games in my country (that's Greece unfortunately) start at €69.99 instead of 59.99, which is unfair compared to the $59.99 anyway. I've gotten used to it though, taxes suck.

  • Just buy in US Store then. You get lots of cheap Giftcards in US$ online. Problem solved. Just be smart... arrgghhhhh Yay

  • @anima-pura χαχαχαχαχαχαχαχα και ειπα δεν θα δω εναν ελληνα εδω

  • @bezy96 That is indeed a good idea, I've done it a couple of times in the past. It's obviously more tedious of a process to buy the giftcards and then redeem them to your GT instead of just buying sth straight up with your card, but it's beneficial if you're looking to spend a lot, maybe for a special edition and the like.

  • No pre-order for me. I am sad - but 70 Euro for that game is to much! Look at other games - most of them are under 70 Euro. Look at Steam and other platforms. I like the game - but not for every price!

  • That's probably the normal game price for your location it's not just for sea of thieves

  • Then there's us up North in Canada with an $80 price tag.

  • @BeZY96 If I make the purchase from the US store would I play only on the US Servers? (I don't know that is why I 'm asking)

  • @allegingcone5

Nope... you just can buy the Downloadversion. Since MS US dont Ship somewhere else. But you can easy download in your region. All you need is an US Billing Address from low (no!) Tax Region ;)

servers will be same like bought in your region, even language

    Be smart...

  • @BeZY96 Thank you for the advise but still my question remains unanswered.

  • @allegingcone5 Hi guys! First I would like to recommend you guys take an economy class when and if you get to the right levels.

Second, due to taxes being different there is always going to be some slight difference in the price between USD and Euro (for example). But it is mostly due to the conversion rates. $59 IS about 40 Euros. But because of your countries and EU law, there are certain restrictions, customs and such that they have created for certain media. Video games have certain restrictions and you are paying your Union for that.

  • @clumsy-george
I wonder if that's it. Most new games cost 60 euro or less. This one is a bit higher.

  • Higher taxes equals free-ish health care. We are paying $6000 deductible per person for healthcare.

  • @clumsy-george I'm from Belgium as well, our tax system is a bit messed up...

  • i don't see why people trying to defend or justify the case it cost so much in EU ..
its a problem that need fixing...

Could be possibly due to currency conversion.. Here in Canada, the game is about $79.99.

  • I think they have made an average consideration of all the VAT values of the various European countries and therefore applied a uniform price to all. There are different taxes in the US compared to the EU so if we have to get angry we have to do it with our countries and not with those who work hard for a project like this and then rightly get paid. nobody works for free or for little money.
