Force hourglass 1v1 games to happen in sailors grave and not adventure

  • Hourglass should not take place on the high seas because it takes up at bare minimum 2 spots on a server, and when you take into account any single adventure server was ordinally designed to have 5-6 ships engaging with the adventure sandbox and not a temporary fight, hourglass just leads to servers feeling very dead. The cons of having hourglass take place in a private server in sailors grave just like in LSS - that being the defending playstyle of hourglass being removed - is nothing when compared to the pros which are: the sandbox feels a lot more alive because everyone in the server will want to play the game for an extended period of time leading to more natural fun organic interactions.
The only real problem to this is just 2 ships taking up an entire server may be resource intensive, but to rectify this Rare could do something as simple as have 6 hourglass games take place at the same time on one server - and have multiple circle zones that get smaller that are independent from each other so the fights don't merge into one big free for all which would solve the problem of server strain.

and? Those are two players battling it out on open sea, where even a third or fourth player can join in. That is how it is and should be. Server spots don't matter when it's PvP. In the end, one of them will be forced off, leaving that sole winner to either wait to dive or cash in.

After all, you have to pick up their flag, which is an item you can't dive with. Until they remove the requirement to steal those flags, which mind you people hated when nobody rised. And just earn the reward if they did automatically.

As always, Hourglass is not a Mode that needs to be in its own pocket world, away from already dead, 0-combat wannabe players. Hourglass is a tool to encourage others, who happen to pass by...to join in on the action.

  • @burnbacon
The fact that a third or fourth person can join in is fun for the people joining in (sometimes), but for the ship getting teamed on its very annoying because the main reason they lost was more often than not simply because they got teamed on. In LSS however this is completely different because its a battle royale free for all style game mode rather than a 1v1. Also, I can't see how giving up the ability for third parties to invade an HG battle on an adventure server 1v1 encounter to ruin a game outweigh the pros of making any average adventure session feel much more alive than ever with maximized server spots which would only lead to more player to player interactions which is what makes this game so special in the first place rather than seeing 2 ships that won't exist in 10 minutes.

Also, am I reading this correctly? Or am I misinterpreting somehow? "you have to pick up their flag, which is an item you can't dive with." But... you can literally dive to another hourglass game without losing emissary flags won in battle. Again, forgive me if I'm misinterpreting this, but to me it just seems like you have never once even tried to play hourglass pvp - or sot - basically at all. And if you do, (although people are entitled to their own opinions) you just don't make sense at all when it comes to making suggestions that would improve the quality of the game.

  • @dangerpog
FINALLY! A fellow hourglass player understands my frustrations! I could not agree more with everything you are saying here. I also questioned whether or not I was misinterpreting the sentences about diving with flags. You can absolutely dive to another match with any number of broken emissary flags no matter the company, the grade, or whether or not they say "Won in Battle". It is great to see people like you in the community who understand my frustrations. I just got teamed on by a champion sloop and a galleon earlier but somehow sunk the sloop, then the galleon took their (what seemed to be nearly a DOZEN) flags and sunk me. 4v1? 5v1 hourglass? Absolutely outrageous. Agreed.

  • Simple fix then. Remove the ability to carry flags with you.

I swear...players sign up for PvP and they get upset when pvp happens. Never in HG listening does it say "You will find in a 1v1 match, against someone of equal power." It's simple, you will fight someone who wants to pvp with anyone, regardless where on the map or what they are doing.

You desire pvp...but do not want to pvp with more than you can handle. Talk about lack of skill :P

  • @bush-muuh

If I may add to this, hourglass takes 2 spots on each server, which leaves just 4 ships on a large map. If those 4 ships are diving, it leads to a server feeling very empty.

  • Seems a natural evolution given that LSS is in separate servers.

I'm sure you could fit 2 or 3 HG fights into one LSS server.
Once larger ship LSS is introduced we should see Sea Of The Damned which is maybe less rock heavy - maybe more appropriate for several HG fights on one instance.
Would be beneficial to Adventure and HG'ers would be happy to not get 3rd partied - so both segments of the player base would be happy.

The effects of HG on Adventure were maybe less pronounced prior to widespread diving - now it is extremely detrimental.

The argument of 'threat of third party/PvE is integral to HG and should be maintained' is not strong enough to keep the status quo.

  • @burnbacon
Removing the ability to dive with flags is an extremely bad idea and goes against the whole point of season 19 which is to allow for much faster requeue times in hourglass - it would also lead to a ton of downtime between every hourglass game because you would have to sell between every fight which is insanely annoying. This is the exact reason Rare consciously made the choice to include flags in the items that you can dive with, removing this quality of life feature is just devolving the game and there would be widespread outrage if they did what you're suggesting..

And as for your next point, players sign up for pvp expecting a fair 1v1 game... because why wouldn't they? Who would want to go into a 1v1 fight just to be third partied out of nowhere. No one benefits from it unless the third party has hourglass raised - but at that point why not just vote into your own 1v1 game so as to not ruin someone else mid fight? Doing this also means you get into a battle with someone who is of somewhat equal skill to you (because of skill based matchmaking, which I don't think you know exists, as you say you won't come across someone of "equal power"). Also, HG 1v1's its presented to be just that that: a 1v1 - I mean the hourglass update trailer describes it as a '1v1 battle'.

You desire pvp...but do not want to pvp with more than you can handle. Talk about lack of skill :P

Almost everyone desires pvp without unfair, uncontrollable losses due to another ship. If you lose a fight without a third party - its fair and completely fine. Also, "talk about a lack of skill?" I have just under 1000 levels in hourglass - this feedback comes from a ton of experience in the worst parts of HG that can easily be fixed.

It's honestly just clear to me that you never play Hourglass, and if you do, you have never been third partied before, and if you have, you will honestly just accept whatever happens to you which will never result in positive feedback on how to improve the game.

Your literal counter argument is "keep hourglass in adventure, because third partying can happen which just results in frustration which is a beneficial aspect of HG."

  • @europa4033
That is true. It would make the server feel empty so is there really one solution to this issue?

  • @dangerpog

Don't worry. @BurnBacon is one of maybe 7 players globally that wants Hourglass matches to be on Adventure servers...and I don't even think he actually wants it. He's just being @BurnBacon. The rest of the concurrent playerbase would much prefer hourglass be off on its own servers...or generally don't care.

Taking Hourglass out of Adventure would be such a positive move for the game. On any given server with an hourglass match on it, you've got at least 1/3 of the server that has no intention of engaging with the adventure aspect of the server. The losing ship gets merged off the server anyways. The winning ship re-dives or b-lines to the outpost to lower and leave the server 99% of the time. Quite literally wasted space in what should be a sandbox adventure environment.

  • @sweetsandman
Yeah I'm not sure why BurnBacon disagrees, based on his counterpoints it sounds like he has no clue what he's saying lol.

But yeah, hourglass being on a separate server would not only benefit the PvP players, but also the PvE players. The only reason this wasn't or hasn't been done is probably because the resources or development time might not be worth it in the eyes of Rare when they could be working on something that would appeal to a wider audience of players. Regardless, I hope this suggestion results in a real change - this would help the state of the game massively.

  • @dangerpog it's been requested countless times by the community - including I imagine most (if not every) SOT partner. It's not like it's an under-requested change.

It's hard to say if it's a lack of resources holding them back from doing it...or outright stubbornness.

    I'd guess the latter.

  • Please avoid engaging in personal arguments and derailing the topic of the thread. It is fine to debate the content of the post, and the viewpoints therein, but disrespecting any of your fellow pirates personally is against the pirate code, and our forum rules.

  • In the future, it likely Rare will once again bend the knee to this demand or request. Going off past threads on how players react and which.l results in.

Hourglass will transform into another arena clone. The thing players wanted, which if everyone recalls.
To maintain arena, they needed a whole team to work on it. Only. Look how that went, lack of updates that followed to meet demands, while also trying to keep adventure (the main focus)

They will have to adjust the way circle closes to around the players to make fights more harsh, faster just to keep players happy. Adjust resources so everyone is “equal” and do nothing about cheaters or players who run, chase, loss farm. Because that be a headache to do.

After a month maybe three. Players will demand more changes, reverts, removal, add more rewards because everyone already reached the end. Then we have the other problem.

Voyages are a loop. You find island, do the thing and deliver
Hourglass will follow this same issue. Battling the same person, players, crews back to back because your so called skill can’t be measured and you are just repeating the same dull battle.
Who can board faster and spawn camp, forcing ship out of bounds. Or if they do what arena did, add some scoring which then people will exploit or nobody can score because they miss shots due to the game. (Never players poor aim) waves get in the way.

Again it’s a loop. You fight one on one with no change in the meta or battle tactics because all those special items. Curses, spears, etc can’t go with you. Since that won’t be skillful. It dull and boring after awhile

Rare should know this. Maybe that why they won’t make hourglass a separate thing like Last ship? Because it be a repeat of arena nonsense.
That and they want players to fight in the open world. Two ships already in battle, makes a good feel to join an already started battle.
But that all just logical thinking and predictions from someone who reads every claim the game will die or dying unless they add this thing. Demands from players who don’t like to face the whole game and rather be in a small pocket out of the main seas.
It a theory, big fat guess on a single players part and nothing more judging from everything posted. Will it come true? Maybe not but it too risky to waste resources, time to do it.

But who knows. Like started, Rare has been known to bend the knee, add something and it break the game but they won’t back down afterwards. :p they will adjust it.

My two cents are over. no need for follow up kids.

  • @burnbacon troygh all that years following introduction of Hourglass you didn't farm any curse.

Yet trough out all that years you are at all topics that have anything to do with HG.

Somebody more cynical than me would risk statment that if you would sink same time you use to pvp on forum into actually gameplay in HG your opinion cloud at least have some weight.
