Honest after event Feedback

  • Ahoy there you salty surfers of the web. I have a few things to say pertaining to this weekends Bilge Rat event. These opinions come from me as well as the community that I sail with.

First off, let me start with the things that were enjoyed. The firework displays were a bit wholesome. I never heard a complaint about them and the crews I sailed with were always a little bit excited to spot them at an outpost.

The rewards from Duke and Larinna were mostly welcomed. I was a beta player who had obtained PL before the Hungering Deep. By the time the Cursed Crews came out, my personal crew had disbanded and the Sea of Thieves became boring to me. I missed out on the Kraken Skull figure head and kind of regretted it. However, I understand that some old timers are upset to see it available again. Believe me, my "Commendation Hunting" ship still sports the Hungering One figure head, and I tote around Merrick's Drum. A color variation would have sufficed here.

The curse was unexpected and welcomed.

The reset of Doubloons was a necessary evil. I get it, and if it improves things, I support it.

The communication from Rare was really lackluster. The event was hyped up as "time limited". As an adult who literally works every weekend, the time I had to spend was also limited. When I did that fourth voyage and was paid in gold, I thought it was another bug. The voyage clearly stated that it was worth 200 Doubloons. I even opened a ticket thinking it was a bug. I mean, the time limited Doubloon voyage not paying Doubloons when it clearly stated that it was paying Doubloons did not make sense. However, as I spoke to others in the community, this was "the plan".

It appears the same was to be had for the "lost cargo" voyage. One and done.

Rare could have and should have communicated this to us. They spoke about a cap that we see is 4,000. In reality, the cap was much lower due to whatever economy system this was supposed to be.

It was only when I watched a video from Rare-Thief that it started to make sense. The stock from Duke and Larinna would remain for twelve months. It would be added to, then cycled out. That was a better explanation than "Time limited - Time Limited - Time Limited" and thinking I only had this weekend to complete the quests.

    How to improve:

    1. Communicate the actual economy system
    2. Reskin rather than rerelease the older cosmetics
    3. Make Doubloons a bit more obtainable through the previous systems of commendations, tomes, etc. Scale back...ok, but make them grindable / farmable for the players who enjoy chasing "the things".
    4. Communicate your intentions rather than having the community "figure it out"

Lastly, I will leave something of a positive note here. Every one of my ship mates enjoyed the new lost shipment voyages with sirens as a threat. I would like to see this as a regular rotation. However, some waves should include sharks as the threat.

Thank you for reading this far. Stay Salty my friends.

  • Yes yet again it comes down to lack of clear information out there on the high seas that makes the "rage" worse for the community.

It's the main (& easy to fix) fault that comes with these events/updates that Rare have done for years at this stage.

Rare you have to be clearer with how the event works and what is actually changing. Doesn't have to be in a YT video but if you mention in the video to a blog post that highlights all the updates or better yet put it in the events tabs in game.

The reset should have maybe been done a couple weeks early (at least) before the weekender to see how the average pirate earns doubloons during that time to see if anything needed tweaking to make it more manageable for players who don't have that much free time over others.

Heck make the event last a week, limiting it to a couple days isn't cool for people who won't have a chance to event attempt it.

  • Communicate the actual economy system

    We known for months.

Communicate your intentions rather than having the community "figure it out

They have about two videos explaining everything and even player created videos all over YouTube explaining it even more.

Make Doubloons a bit more obtainable through the previous systems of commendations, tomes, etc. Scale back...ok, but make them grindable / farmable for the players who enjoy chasing "the things".

Still can to a degree but I understand why they reduced some. So players aren’t waiting between months with already max out doubloons limit. It still grinds or which funny as it is. Something players hate doing anyways.

  • It was originally designed to be this weekend only for the items then they would be gone. That is why it was time limited but after all the feedback on insiders they got regarding it they listened and gave it a year to stay in with Duke so big props to them for doing that right. There was no way most people could have gotten all that bought by the end of the weekend only. At least you can work on it and buy it when you have the doubloons to spend

They made an event that wasn’t thought trough at all and changed the most silliest thing about it after Insiders begged them to do so. This isn’t a „big props“ situation. More like a „well, at least they didn’t mess up entirely this time“ situation.

  • the reset simply shouldnt have happened. the cap only exists because they knew people would exploit to get doubloons by trading voyages, doing pve servers etc etc. which a lot of people just did anyway to recover our precious deleted currency. the increase in cost of levels now makes them not even worth it as they take 9 reaper chests per 1 level? thats insanity. the cap basically forces people to have to take a break from exploiting the voyages having to go spend what doubloons they earned to ehn get back to exploiting to recap out their doubloons. and they want to ensure that at the end of the weekend the most doubloons people can exploit to is the 4000 cap. then each new month wil bring in 2 new 1500 doubloon cosmetics never before released to take up most of those exploited doubloons.

its just nonsense that the reset was to prevent us from buying everything all at once. but if you have been around since year 1 most of those people dont have anything to buy other than the new items so they need 3000 per weekended then just exploit to get back to cap as its now impossible to reach cap outside of the weekended... i mean not impossible i guess but thats a lot of reaper chests to grind and not worth the effort involved. limited the voyages just so people will have to find ways to exploit to minmax their play time since rare literally wasted all the time we spent playing and earning doubloons prior.

bringing back old cosmetics for people who missed them is really cool. this being overly concerned about how fast people can obtain them and forcing people to play in an unnatural and gross way to reobtain what they have literally had stolen from them. i get its a pirate game but its beyond disgusting that the devs decided to just literally steal our loots.

the lost shipment voyage also felt a bit gross. it wasnt hard but still required much more effort for an unknown cosmetic combined with a measly 30 doubloons. i dunno. i stuck around to check out this weekend to give them a bit of benefit of the doubt. but i wasnt impressed. they keep making decision after decision the drains the life out of this game for me. it used to feel magical but them making decisions based off flawed understanding of data sets. trying to increase month returning player count at the sake of player fun and satisfaction is not the way to go. and this isnt the first time. it is however the last straw. or final nail in the coffin. which ever you prefer. banking so heavily on player made content for next season will prove to be another mistake. though giving players those kinds of tools is always a plus for any game. so props to them for adding them and spending so much time and money on adding something thats likely going to add very little to the game overall because of how players approach to the game has been burned into our brains for 8 years. gotta collect the cosmetics. gotta watch the currency count grow just so they can steal it from us. gotta keep 100%ing content just for them to add a new tracker to say "do it all over again"
