  • While we are all on the topic of doubloons I think Gold needs to be looked at as well.

So many folks have been saying they have nothing to spend gold on which indicates that they have all the cosmetics they want for their pirate(s) and their ship(s) so maybe it's time to think of something new that players can spend gold on other than hats and sails etc?

I dunno how much I've written "jewellery" on these forums but here is another exhausted idea that people have asked for already multiple multiple times:

A player home, this would be a way for players to 'wear' their wealth / success in the game and I presume a relatively easy way to introduce something for players to spend their gold on.

Can we have a player home with a treasure vault that you can decorate too? Could this be done in the same way trinkets are bought and displayed on player ships?

    Home:

External and internal wall variants, window variants, door variants, ceiling slates and colour variants, furniture, decorations, paintings, curtains, a garden? etc.

    Treasure Vault:

Piles of Gold, Treasure Chests, Goblets, Skulls, wall hangings and tapestries etc.

Could make it that if you want to show off your home you can invite friends or open your crew whilst at your player home and this facilitates a social space / lobby before boarding your ship and setting sail / diving.

It's not an infinite solution to the gold problem but it would offer something different and new for players to spend gold on at least for a good while. Player homes work in games because players like to take ownership over their games and players like customisable options to individualise their experience and enjoy expressing their individuality through the games they play , this is why sooooo many players spend soooo much time on character creation screens and on survival games building bases and homes etc.

Sea Of Thieves has an amazing art style and player homes would be a different way to appreciate it too.

    P.s. Earrings

  • and once you bought all the things for a home to build and set up your vault. Then what? What else can I spend my gold on...

There needs to be a loop of endless ways to spend it...like how you had to purchase Voyages.

  • @burnbacon

I agree and disagree with you at the same time haha.

I think purchasing voyages from the trading companies now after it's been free for so long would be a bad move and would leave a bitter taste on everyone's mouth, I think they have to stick with what they've done however I do feel that a new set of voyages that are unique and interesting and different and maybe level locked would be a good idea, I also think they should bring back the ability to 'gift' voyages to other player crews as well because being able to help another crew out by giving them something they can't obtain yet is a cool thing to do from veteran players to newer players.

I hear what your saying about the player home idea, I did say it's not an infinite solution to the gold problem but it is something different to do and progress and grow and work on and it's a different way to showcase your in game achievements in a similar way to the already existing cosmetics and how you display ship trinkets etc.

Having a player home/social space/lobby would be a huge pointless waste of time for me. I don't log on to sit around and look at pixels reflecting the amount of wealth I and others have made in this game (which is pointless for me at this point, and even then if I cared I could just look at the logbook to see that info). I don't log on to just stand around somewhere waiting and waiting to sail. I don't want to log in a lobby with up to 15 other people (16 players max for each server) all talking, possibly being toxic, blasting music, purposly being annoying, etc. while waiting and wondering what's on my server, or dealing with any of that before I set sail.

If my friends want to hop on, we join the call and decide what we want to do as we wait for the game to load. Once it does, we supply up, raise flag, raise anchor, and go. Or, we compare servers to see what's up if we're looking for something specific. During the week, if I just want to work on Hunter's Call rep, I can go to the SoT Community Discord and find other like-minded players forming a ship and advertising to join or I form my own.

Standing around waiting to play the game, is what I do as I'm making myself coffee waiting for my computer to finish downloading a new season, patch, etc.

That's cool, I don't much like player lobby stuff either, the sea dogs tavern for arena was a good example of how that can be a bad thing but a player home would be at least in my opinion a nice additional personal touch to the game and something to spend gold on even if it's just for awhile and even if you choose not to do it that's okay or invite anyone in to see it or you don't go and see anyone else's. It's kinda optional, you could also just sail around in default cosmetics too. A player home is a bit like having cosmetics and trinkets for your ships and your pirate, it's not that your standing around reflecting on anything but it is all there and it serves as a visual representation of your tastes and your in-game accomplishments that you choose to showcase IF you choose to. It's all a personal preference for sure!

Loads of people I know play games where base building and player homes are a thing and generally those people enjoy those games and spend a lot of time customising things.

Players of all ages have funny little in-game rituals for when they start a session or when they leave a session too. It used to be players would go into a tavern at an outpost and raise a tankard and drink grog and vomit all of each other at the end of a session, still happens occasionally I think 🤔, I knew a guy that sailed to a specific island and hung out there for a bit before logging off. I've heard of some people sailing to an island, scuttling their ship and deliberately "marooning" themselves on islands and "camping" for a few nights just for the vibes. I used to go to Mêlée island and visit the Scumm Barr just for the vibes of that location occasionally 😂 We used to have a ritual that before we set sail to do reapers bones stuff, we would hold a funny little ceremony at the jetty where we burned ourselves to death with fire bombs and went to the ferry of the damned to fetch red flame to light our ship's lanterns red with before sailing off to cause mayhem and we called it the baptism of fire! (original I know right?) Point is, peeps do weird little things in games. It's not fortnite where you just log in, do a stretch of matches and then leave, their is a slight role play aspect to SOT in terms of choosing your pirate and then wearing your success and having comsetics and collections which are visual representations.for what you like and what you have earned along the way and a player home would fit into that. Chances are it'll never happen anyways but it's fun to think of possibilities.

  • I think they've vaguely hinted at some kind of guild hall thing, but who knows if that's still in the cards. I don't think it will satisfy the "nothing to spend gold on" crowd though because they are either not buying the items in the stores as it is or they have so much money piling up that they'd probably be able to buy most of the home/guild hall stuff almost immediately.

Something like this has been requested a lot, and it's likely we'll see something similar. It seems to be very niche to me though, and I don't know how useful it would end up being. It definitely doesn't add anything to the sandbox.

  • @d3adst1ck

I agree that it isn't an infinite solution to the gold problem but it's something, I don't think it will do anything for the sandbox besides getting people out earning gold to decorate etc. At the end of the day though the game is about buying cosmetics and wearing your success whether that be on your ships or on your Pirate and it's entirely optional whether you do that or not. People have the freedom to choose whether they spend their gold or not and if they don't then that's okay but then they can't complain that they have nothing to spend gold on if they don't care about cosmetics, because that's the game.

With sandbox, there is an abundance of great suggestions flying in everyday from players. One guy just suggested Tsunami's and surfing mechanics and receding tides, recently there was a YouTube video suggesting yet again a new region and Tall Tales etc. plenty of suggestions and feedback regarding sandbox but we get re-skinned same old same old month after month. A player home is just one of many suggestions that offer the game a little bit more depth and a little more of something to do. Commendations are literally just a digital stamp book, a lot of them don't unlock anything for completing them, your just ticking boxes and there are players that commit themselves to doing Comms so I imagine that a player home with something visual to grow and collect and progress would be infinitely more rewarding than screens with boxes to tick.

The problem with a lot of suggestions is that they sound great but either require a ton of work for very little end result, or they aren't technically possible without massive changes to the game. Both situations lead to them not being considered or being placed far down the priority list which is why we get reskinned stuff a lot.

At least it sounds like they might be dropping a lot of the low effort content that they felt forced to make every update in order to release bigger things less frequently, but we'll see how that plays out.
