Does in-game VOIP and text chat still work if I have not verified my age with ID in the UK?

  • As the title says. I am curious if anyone, or the devs, can confirm if in-game push-to-talk VOIP features, and text chat, are disabled in Sea of Thieves if I haven't done the Xbox Age Verification ID in the UK?
I don't want it to be disabled, but it can be hard to tell if players in game cannot hear or read your chat, or if they're just ignoring it.

  • From https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/family-online-safety/online-safety/UK-age-verification

What happens if I don't verify my age?
Players who don't verify their age between now can continue to play and enjoy Xbox. However access to certain social features will be limited to friends only unless age verification is complete.

Until your account is age verified, you'll only be able to use the following features with Xbox friends:

    • Voice and text communication
    • Party functionality and game invites
    • User-generated content (including the activity feed)

You won't be able to use:

    • Looking for Group (LFG)
    • Custom Clubs

Verify your age to unlock full access to social features.

  • @look-behind-you Hello, thank you for your reply. But this doesn't answer my question and is information I have already seen online, otherwise I'd not be asking. This strikes me as a low effort response, sorry.

Are you trying to say that only my Xbox friends will be able to see my text chat and game VOIP in-game?
I understood that Xbox support page to be saying that Party chat and text messaging in the Xbox app will be unavailable.

So what I am asking is:
Does this also apply inside Sea of Thieves specifically? To specific in-game chat features?

  • @hyfrith It applies to all games using an Xbox/Microsoft account.

Any and all communication/social features are limited to those on your Friends list, which includes voice and text chat in-game.

  • @look-behind-you Thank you, I understand now.

I'd suggest that this should be broadcast more clearly to Sea of Thieves players. Given how much of the game revolves around organic social interactions on the seas!
Many players, like myself, are probably trying to use text and voice chat in game to say Everything Is Alright! or gg! , but are finding that everyone is "ignoring" them. When actually it's being blocked at the Xbox level despite how the game still lets you type out messages and they appear to send in-game.
