Insider Survey

  • So yesterday I completed my Insider survey but it did not give me enough scope to give suggestions.

    So here we go:

Devs spoke about a toxic community, yet added an entire faction geared towards being toxic - show any non gamer friends a picture of a reaper character and ask what game it is from and they will never guess it is a Pirate game. I had a go at a Ashen Garrison and couldn't believe when I open the vault and it was all reaper treasure! Devils Roar and Ashen loot should be allowed to be sold at outposts.

Game mechanics have got rid of good ol' fashioned ship to ship combat. Since when in the history books and films has a Pirate combat been about firing yourself from a cannon and then grappling onto a ship! From boarding comes spawn killing and other toxic swearing across a mic.

Let's get back to the rustic, simple pirate game that attracted its player base. I have 17,000,000 gold and nothing to spend it on as I want to look like a pirate and not some fantasy character. I feel that Rare have lost their way. More content to me would be to progress Tall Tales and story content - especially with the introduction of Safer Seas where you can enjoy the stories and relax without the fear of being attacked. I enjoyed the fun of buying voyages from vendors, looking through their stuff, buying bundles to put on the shelves or finding that bottle on a beach - not futuristic, difficult to navigate menus.

Add properties, a small wooden building that can be decorated and used as a spawn point. Supplies that you collect/buy during gameplay can be kept in a home storage when you log off and use to restock your ship when you logon and your ship will spawn outside your property.

Make alliances more worthwhile - add a section to the map board of ships wanting to alliance, have more missions that are alliance based. Let's get the community back together and overcome the minority of toxic players. Don't force non PVP people to have to engage in PVP in order to get cosmetics. The amount of fishing 'Dads n Lads' I have met who just want to enjoy the world.

Add more ship sizes or different temperature areas icebergs, warm clothes, hot weather that effects food level so you have to eat more or jump in water to stay cool. Have bug spray and crafting of basic antidote. Make it more role play for those that want it.

I would pay a monthly subscription to have my own server for me and friends to play on, where I could host and strip back the game to what I loved 6 years ago. Player mods are leading the way with other games to let players pick and choose their content for their servers.

I have a 50 hour a week stressful career and want to play this game to chill out and spend social time with friends. I am a returner after 3 years away due to it being more stress after work and not worth the time. The empty servers now are WONDERFUL!!!

Don't get me wrong with faster restocking of boats and sovereign selling these make game play more faster at a turn around which is a blessing.

This is a great game and one of a kind, I feel this is one of the reasons it is still going after all this time! Let's get it back to what it was!

  • I agree with what's been said here. I would love to see rare get back to the core of the game. I do like a lot of things that have been done. However, I haven't been a fan of content or gameplay mechanics that favor toxic PVP and I haven't been a fan of the reapers buns faction either which has progression requirements that make people go in search of PVP. It's not that I don't like PVP at all. I love a good ship to ship battle, but the boarding and spawn killing gets tedious, especially when it's coupled with toxic voice chat from someone and in the past complaining seem to do nothing about it. Those players weren't eliminated from sea of thieves.

At any rate, I agree wholeheartedly. I would subscribe to a service that allowed me to configure my own server or just have a server where my friends can join even if I couldn't configure it at all and it was just like the live servers. I would love to be able to have a private server situation that still allowed gold accumulation and advancement at a slower rate. As long as the rule set was the same as the live server, there would probably be PVP encounters inside of my own server with my own friends because it wouldn't become toxic. I don't mind losing the treasure, it's not about that. It's the interaction and the attitude that have bothered me about the PVP community. The vulgar trash talking that's not fit for kids or when you're trying to have down time with your wife.

I completed the same survey that was mentioned above and I said that I would be heavily interested in safer fleets and custom seas. to me it's the only way to get back to a game that I have loved for years and have been playing since day one. I used to buy every plunger pass. I probably haven't played in 2 years at this point.

At any rate, please release safer fleets and custom seas. It's been talked about forever now and it has hemmed and hawed and dithered about by Rare because the worried it would break the player base because of private servers but the player base has already been broken. People have walked away from the game and aren't coming back because they can't spend time with their family on the game anymore and it's been that way for a while.

  • So you do realize the ashen Garrison is Flamehearts fort and his statute is there so it's crazy that they would actually put Reaper items inside a Reaper fort. You can dive to them from any faction and get that specific loot though unless it turns out to be a mega stash then it will be the 5 Reaper chests.

Also they are coming out with a monthy subscription where you can have custom servers to play with your friends it has no rep gold or comms but with that it also gives you access to safer seas fleets where you can add your friends to sail with on multiple boats and the same safer seas restrictions are in place.

  • @vtb-thumper

A few days ago we were able to play custom servers on Insiders. It was a lot of fun, as I spawned 5-6 skeleton galleons and put an ashen lord on them. When this gets released, we want to summon 2 Burning Blades and fight each other, as well as other hilarious and fun challenges we're coming up with.

  • Thanks for reminder. I forgot to check my emails. :)

  • I just need to point out that I am not in the camp of players that are interested in the story in Sea of Thieves, or Tall Tales. I also think that the intention of the game was originally for players to find the most enjoyment by interacting with each other not via fixed story lines. Of course everyone likes different things and you’re definitely right to give feedback.

  • Devs spoke about a toxic community, yet added an entire faction geared towards being toxic - show any non gamer friends a picture of a reaper character and ask what game it is from and they will never guess it is a Pirate game.

Sinking players, with or without being a reaper, is not toxic.

  • First off, saying the Reaper’s Bones is “toxic” kinda misses the point. Sea of Thieves is a pirate sandbox. There’s always been a faction that pushes players toward PvP and risk. Reapers just made that role clearer instead of people pretending they weren’t hunting other ships.

That said, I do agree the game could use more grounded pirate cosmetics and things to actually spend gold on. A lot of longtime players are sitting on piles of gold with nothing interesting to buy unless you want glowing skeleton armor or something wild. More classic pirate gear would go a long way.

I also agree Tall Tales and story content are some of the best parts of the game. Expanding that side, especially with Safer Seas around now, makes a lot of sense for players who just want to explore the world and enjoy the lore.

Where I disagree again is the boarding argument. Boarding has been part of pirate combat in this game since day one. Launching yourself out of a cannon to board is just the game’s exaggerated pirate style. Ship fights would honestly be way more stale if it was only circling and shooting cannons.

The housing and alliance ideas are actually pretty interesting though. A little pirate hideout or something to spend gold on would give veteran players another long-term goal besides cosmetics.

  • @europa4033 this sounds amazing!

  • @dermasterbob the toxic ones don't sink you - they spawn kill you. If they sank your boat at least you could respawn on a new one but you don't.

Oh, we were laughing so hard. I had the sheer look of horror flash across my face as 20 Greymarrow's suddenly rose up from the ground (terrifying sound lol), and were chasing us all over the island. After lighting a number of kegs, we STILL had several Greymarrow's chasing us. We're all submitting ideas of challenging naval battles between each other. I can't wait lol.

  • @dermasterbob the toxic ones don't sink you - they spawn kill you. If they sank your boat at least you could respawn on a new one but you don't.

    1. This has nothing to do with reapers.
    2. You can scuttle

Scutteling was literally made for the exact situation youre describing.
What stops you from using that feature?

  • @dermasterbob

Same reason many dont wanna fight, pvp, give up. Most time its Ego or "It shouldnt happen" excuse.

same excuse players throw out when they face a player in HG who uses bone callers or any special cannon balls. "Not fair" or something.

  • @europa4033 I bet! If this is a thing I can't wait now either!!!!

  • Also another suggestion would be individual body tattoos.

So you can choose different styles for each area of the body and mix and match.

  • Diving to PVE and Grapple Gun both were massive downgrades to the state of the game. I wouldnt me mad if they de-activated grapple guns attaching to ships entirely.

  • Couldnt have said it better myself. Im a casual who for the life of me cant get a single game where im not sunk instantly or boarded in miliseconds i joined a server yesterday sailed to a garrison for like 10 minutes solo on a sloop bc i was on open crew and didnt get a teammate and as a result as soon as i parked a brig sunk me because they were following me and i hadnt noticed. All people do is board and spawn kill. Gallys are horrendous because if you get a sweaty pvp player they just spawn camp and run around the deck and its a disaster in open seas because i barely even get one crew mate let alone 3 of them. The game definitely needs work everything you said IS an issue. What i want is a way to kick players from your crew. The amount of times i have got someone and they just afk so i couldn't raise emmy or do voyages is unreal thats definitely a big issue. And i agree with the diving to a exstent. Diving i feel is a nice addition but i feel like it should only be for voyages that are extremely far. Say you spawn in port merrick and your voyage is all the way in devils roar. It should be an option to dive there mainly just for people who want to do tall tales without getting absolutely touched by the pvp sweats. Sailing is fun but your almost 97% garentee to sink nowadays and the encounters are horrible. I could be fighting a gally and a skelly gally spawn and im solo. What do i do then? And now for my main problem. Safer seas. Good idea. Awful execution.

things the game needs in my opinion

Make it so instead of renting your boat in safer seas you can use captained ships this way you can use all your cosmetics and just chill on the ship you grinded for.

*Add a sort of reward system for safer seas.

Maybe some kind of campaign tab that tracks things like how many encounters you have with megs sort of like milestones but reward players small items like cosmetics i.e. a safer seas exclusive curse. This way theres more incentive to actually play safer seas.

*Increase meg spawns and kracken encounters in safer seas

Its ok they arent over saturated but in safer seas where then is no players its nice to actually encounter things. Maybe make it so you can see the kracken in the distance. Or hear its call and you can find it those ways.

    *Improve npc interactions.

If a skelly ship and meg spawns the meg should attack them. Not only focus the player. You did it in the maiden voyage tutorial with the skelly ship and kracken. That would be cool to see in both high seas and safer seas.

*More places to sell reaper loot.

This is a big one. Reapers should be able to sell at outpost. You already have the skeleton caged at every outpost that takes flags. Make him accept all reaper loot! I shouldn't have to spend 3 minutes going to an outpost like 10 minutes doing one then have to sail across the dang map to an island where half the lobby frequents just to get one good haul! Especially not when theres a reaper tent at every outpost already!

    *My requested features.

*More pet interactions/ reasons to buy them.

You can feed them and shoot them from cannons. Thats kinda it. Make it so pets like dogs or foxes can be gaurd animals and monkeys as extra crew. Parrots could be used as a look out. These would fix two issues. If your open crew and dont get teammates you can use a pet to fill the role. And secondly. It makes them feel useful. Yes i know this would be pay to win but they're fairly cheap at only 499 which only requires you to grind like a pass and a half. And like i said this also makes it more worth the purchase and effort.

    • The weather.

Storms are fine. They can be predicted or seen before they happen. Fog? Its a problem. Twice now i have had fog roll in AS SOON as i saw a ship. When your 2 man on a brig bc a guy bailed and parked by a garrison in thick fog your practically screwed! Theres no way to see in the fog even with lanterns on. Add some kind of way to predict the fog. Or make it so you can see it on the horizon slowly rolling in. This fixes the fog problem.

With that im done ranting about the game and my little nit-picks.
Good day to all you fellow insiders and happy late Easter!

Rare stated that safer seas will never have exclusive content.
They dont want to incentivize people to play safer seas, they are restricting safer seas to incentivize people to play on high seas.
Its ment to be a place where you can chill, if you dont want PvP for whatever reason, not a place to complete the game and get exclusive rewards.

*Increase meg spawns and kracken encounters in safer seas

Its ok they arent over saturated but in safer seas where then is no players its nice to actually encounter things. Maybe make it so you can see the kracken in the distance. Or hear its call and you can find it those ways.

That would be fine, since those dont count for the Athena commendations.

Especially not when theres a reaper tent at every outpost already!

The Reapers are ment to be a PvP focused company (yes they can also be played solely for PvE), that's why their hideout is in the middle of the map, so that it's never far away from you or any other player.
Its also ment to make running as a reaper harder and incentivize PvP.
As any other trading company, you have 7 different outposts you can sail to to sell, but since Reapers only have one, so by design, running away doesn't work that well for them.

I and many others dont want that to change and since Rare made it that way for the reasons I just explained, I dont think such a change is likely to happen.
