Doubloon Currency - Developer Update

  • @sonicbob
I thought about it a bit.

Now that were getting the sword for lifetime doubloons, so we cant spend anything for it, could we get another item to actually make a dent in our wallets?

Maybe add a jacket that as many suggested then costs 10-15k doubloons?

Way more affordable for everyone, but still makes a small dent in our wallets, instead of thousands of doubloons going to waste.

  • Overall good change.
    Few pointers and my feedback.

I read there "reinvest development time" to make this system work - S19 is already 90% scrapped, I hope this won't scrap S20.

Secondly, this means you do not have this in-place yet?

If not, people will go to against-ToS websites which show them those stats.

Idea - put it in the Larinna shop anyway - I rather buy it or later on prove to support that I HAD 50k
One of your stream team members lost day 1 eye-patch and support claimed they never had it - stories like that make me question developers and anyone working around an account I pay for.
If I have 50k now, I rather spend it myself than trust your system - and that's your fault that I have trust issues, but that's for another day.
Right now, I don't feel like converting doubloons to gold, but having my sword guaranteed.

    Thanks!

@sonicbob Sorry but this is a HORRIBLE decision and an insult to veteran players like myself. Caving into people who are upset cause they didn’t earn it isn't fair, and sets a horrible precedent. If they can’t afford it the sword isn’t meant for them. These are meant to be commemorative items to some of your most dedicated players. Now the only item that took hard work and serious dedication is much easier to achieve and will be much less special because of it. We’re talking the “doubloon hoarder” title that can be achieved by turning in 2 reapers chests as a grade 5. Like are we serious? Unfortunately this has been a going theme for years in this game. Thought for once this would be a place where you would hold your ground. Really disappointing. If this is really the route you’re taking the other items should increase significantly. 50 doubloons for the title is a joke.

playing in alliance servers isn't hard work

  • @Sonicbob Even if I didn't reach 50K lifetime doubloons, I feel much better about this change now. Thank you.

  • This is much better, although I think the Title should be switched to 50k lifetime earned. Thank you @Sonicbob !

Doubt it. Someone designed a new query to figure out total lifetime doubloons for players and will insert an item into those players' inventories. Not much time involved.

  • @silversura sounds like you didn’t play the game enough. I have 110k+ doubloons and 90 percent or more has been from stealing loot. The sword isn’t meant for you if you can’t afford it. It’s meant for the hardcore players as a commemorative special item. The other items won’t be special whatsoever as the pricing is a joke. 2 reapers chest for the “doubloon hoarder” title. What a joke.

You're underestimating the power of SoT spaghetti code : that query and those minor changes will probably suddenly bring back water desync, make Megs fly and have half the doubloon-producing items in the game suddenly despawn, along with kill the frame rate on K-9, for no reason. :p

  • Still really disappointed in the items being given out. Why not offer a matching hull and ship set for the new sails!?!

  • I couldn't see a way to edit my original post so here goes.

On reflection, whilst I am not annoyed about the idea of using a 'lifetime count' (that seems like a great idea) I am annoyed by how low the bar for these items are. I mean 50 to have a title that says the wearer is a 'hoarder' of the currency, hardly. I feel like there should be more items and better staggered in pricing.

  • @sonicbob said in Doubloon Currency - Developer Update:

While we had originally dismissed alternative distribution methods during the development process due to various technical and design comprehension reasons - we've made the call to reinvest development time into this system to create a better end result for our players.
The change we'll be making here will be to award the Doubloon Cutlass to all players who have earned over the 50,000 Doubloon threshold in their cumulative lifetime earnings. This means that even if players no longer have the Doubloons in their wallet, as long as they have earned over the 50,000 Doubloon threshold in their account lifetime they will be awarded this reward as recognition for their lifetime achievement.

While players will be unable to see their lifetime earnings, this will be calculated within our systems behind the scenes - this will take place on the 16th April prior to the reset. As the team work through this change in our approach, this will mean that the distribution of the Doubloon cutlass will happen later than originally planned and we'll communicate the specific timings of this rewards arrival closer to the time.

    Drew 'Sonicbob' Stevens

    W change thanks.

However I'm deeply concerned about people not knowing whether they qualify without using spreadsheets or external services.

It reads like the method used to calculate it, is either drawing from archived data, or is prone to mistakes, or is only being applied to a tiny subset retroactively because of performance costs of retrieving archived data from Azure.

Would like to know sooner, rather then later if I qualify, without having to trust external tools like Geekya commendation tracker with site/cookie access.

But hey, still far happier with the result.

  • I hope you guys actually read these posts and actually take into consideration the comments people leave here and all over social media regarding the game.

You guys make these videos and take surveys yet it still always feel like we get nothing but disappointment and the same echo chamber responses. "We're sorry we missed the mark and failed to deliver." It's crazy cause you guys set the deadlines and still fail to deliver.

First things first! PLEASE STOP WITH TIME LIMITED BS FOMO EVENTS!
No one is looking forward to Bilge Rat weekends. Awesome I got to work on the weekends. Guess I need to ignore my family to do an event that Rare has decided only gets to be done for 2 days.
Why can't we have it for a week? Give people of all walks of life an opportunity to play and enjoy something. It doesn't feel rewarding. Feels forced. Oh sorry guys, you had weekend events. F You! That what it feels like you are all saying. We want to play your game and enjoy playing it. Stop forcing us around a tedious schedule. That makes it feel like a chore.

Secondly. I personally wasn't too upset about the 50k sword. It's easy to get doubloons. There's nothing for me to spend them on. I've been just collecting them at this point. I don't ever even need to convert them to gold. I see other people's points who may have done this. I just don't ever understand the stance you guys take on certain things and yet decide to cater to everyone else which leads into the third point....

    Bring back every cosmetic!
Why are we still gatekeeping art. The Bilge Rats have rewarded items from year 1. Bring them all back and let us dump our doubloons into missing items. Tie in the commendations. Wandering Reaper sails, make 10k doubloons. Bone sets, 2500 a piece. Those adventures being time limited were stupid ideas back then. Feels like it defeats the purpose of a Bilge Rat.
Bring em back and let us enjoy the items. Don't feed me the whole idea of "it's a diseevice to the people who did them back then." Most of those people are gone. It's your game. Bring the stuff back and let people spend their doubloons.
One more time for the devs in the back! STOP FOMO EVENTS ON THE WEEKENDS

  • Whilst I asked for Lifetime, id still like a way to see my total lifetime. How can I gaurantee I have achieved this? Im currently sat on 43k Doubloons, and I know in my history I have spent alot of it.. but do I have 50k? I guess ill never know...

They should be able to query in the database directly (aka. outside of their spaghetti code), so no worries. Just be worried that the sword won't display correctly or will cause a desktop crash :)

  • Great change. I'm not even sure if I'll scrape it but it is fairer overall.

  • Im sure if rare add up all the dabloon items that has been released over the years and are owned by the players they wont be far way from 50k spent in the lifetime this could be part of their system to calculate peoples accounts but i think its a great idea those who spent them should be rewarded same as the hoarders i myself have turned loads in and have 75k gathering dust.

Maybe so much complaining is being done by those who had a chance to turn the dabloon items in to add to their account balance currently left them on the beaches and sayed these are useless my dabloon has been spoken .

    Thanks Loyal Dabloon Hoarder 2026

  • @bumpy-bones sounds like somebody who’s upset because they won’t get it their way for not putting in the work. If you really must know, I am a long time server hopper/ PvP player. I’ve earned 110k+ plus doubloons and I’d say about 90 percent or more has been from server hopping stealing loot. Caving to you guys who are complaining isn’t fair, 4 out of the 5 doubloon items are extremely cheap for people like you, and you’re upset over 1 item. Give it a rest. Like I said go sell 2 reapers chest and you can earn the “doubloon hoarder” title. lol

  • This is a good change, hopefully I'll be eligible.

Would be good if there was a way on the SoT website this could all be visualised with our players total doubloon count, whether they'll be eligible for all the items and the total doubloon earned amount count we have earned alongside the cutlass to see if we will be eligible for that too.

  • @sonicbob

This update is too bad and unfair. I'm losing my motivation to play the game because of this update; it's wrong.

I recommend everyone make a 54,050 doubloon deposit, in case the company changes its stance again.

    :D

  • Also - I don't really care but there were a few voices in the community speaking of 10k-15k items.
Since you can spend the doubloons and then they count again for the sword - you could add item for 10k still.
And frankly, 10k can be farmed in that 1st month of S19.
No plans on that? So, basically, anyone who has more than 4050 those doubloons go down the drain (converted to gold automatically in the end).

  • @silversura said in Doubloon Currency - Developer Update:

You can tell players how many doubloons they have in general for today, so they will know at least how many they need...
But still, 50K is too much. The huge difference between players is because some of them were using bugs and glitches to earn these doubloons, and some of them were just playing and trying to earn doubloons as the game was designed.
Now, those who used bugs will receive the great reward! Well done.

You are greatly under estimating the amount you could earn without exploits, remember that it was possible to buy ashen key and ashen chest voyages to share with your galleon crews, and you'd make a profit at the expense of 1 player.

For anyone trying to do some quick math, if you've bought every dubloon item from the shop, (not including items returning from previous seasons plunder passes) you've got an extra 23,610 (I think please double check) to put towards the cutlass.

  • @sonicbob

    Awesome change.

I am unsure if I have earnt 50K + but this is a far more logical and fair calculation of players achievements regardless of how they have interacted with the doubloon economy - either hoarded or spent the currency.

Thanks to the Garrison MegaStash I have built up enough for the lower tier cosmetics so Happy Days and I am sure those who receive the sword will appreciate the change made!

Looking forwards to S19 and beyond!

I'm going to paint a hypothetical to show you the problem with the previous proposition. If they had left it the same...

Player A has 54,050 doubloons. That's all they've ever had and they've never spent a single doubloon on anything. Nothing to do with PvP, they've just earned that passively from Commendations, the season passes, and selling some loot. They could afford everything.

Player B has only 500 doubloons left, but over the years their lifetime earnings has been well over 100K. They converted a ton to gold during boosted weekends, and bought all the items they could with them, because what else would they spend it on? Player B would not have been able to get many of the rewards, despite having earned a lot more than Player A.

Rare neglected the doubloon economy but still left the means to "dump" doubloons (convert) in the game. And a lot of players used that system.

This is why it was changed.

  • @taaaamas I really wouldn't mind another title, 'cuz lets be real, the 50 Doubloons one is really not that interesting for most players.

  • And to top it off half im sure the complaining majority never had to purchase thieves haven runs for athenas fortune i spent loads to buy the voyage when people were begging somebody help them level up athena to level 20 should we hoarders get credit for those we spent ?

We can go on but at the end of the day quit crying about it the bar has been set lets move onto to greener pastures maybe think before you pass over items to sell and hoard all you can .

    Thanks Loyal Dabloon Hoarder 2026

  • @pure-xreactions ? I will get the sword. what is ur point?

  • @bumpy-bones you have enough to buy the sword???How many server alliances did you join to get that?

Given there has been a massive change on the doubloon rewards as a result of all the feedback clearly they do.

  • @sonicbob

Hi Drew, thank you for the update here. I have a question regarding this update

    • Will items be taken into account for this calculation?

Overall my net doubloon worth is supposedly 240k doubloons but my current wallet is much lower.

It would be great if there was a way we could check that we are eligible before this cutoff! would really love to know if I need to grind out the last bit or whether I am safe. I don't have many old screenshots of my inventory, so i can only guesstimate where I am at!

    https://imgur.com/CftzOVf

  • @sonicbob This is a fantastic compromise. I've been playing for 3 years. I have never used my doubloons to buy gold or levels for any trading company. Early on I made a personal challenge to just buy everything in all the stores, which includes everything for doubloons. Anytime I get up to about 3,000 doubloons I go on a shopping spree. When I saw that this cutlass was coming out it made me really upset because I play the game as developers kind of intended to be played. I do comms, I sell all the loot that I get, and then I spend all of my earnings like you're supposed to in a game where you're grinding for cosmetics.

To hoard doubloons if you haven't purchased everything in all the shops kind of goes against the way the game assumes you will be playing it. The only people that would have that many doubloons hoarded after actually buying everything in all the stores would be day one players who have already purchased everything in all the stores lol. That's like the 1% of people that play this game, or less even.

And what upset me personally the most is if everything that is in the store right now that costs doubloons is suddenly going to become worth gold instead then everyone who ever purchased items that were cosmetics for that currency should get a refund! So this is 100% a happy medium for everyone, even though silly people who are buying rep through Larinna lol.

  • @sonicbob
    Really great change.
But I fear the FOMO will be even worse if people have no way of knowing if they qualify without using external tools like geekya.

  • @realstyli I get your point. But in all fairness why is that my problem? These items are made specifically to show the crazy amounts of doubloons I’ve earned. 4 out of the 5 items prices are actual jokes while there’s one (the sword) that takes actual hard work and dedication to achieve. Now suddenly because someone made a poor decision that I didn’t the item I worked really hard for will significantly be less valuable? How is that fair to players like me whatsoever? It’s not my fault they spent their Doubloons on worthless gold that they already had hundreds of millions of. I’ve earned 112k+ plus doubloons and I won’t be able to spend hardly any of it. What an insult.

  • Honestly this sucks.

Before, there was no way of making it to 50k before my trip in April and I was a little disappointed, but at least I had certainty and I made peace with it.

Now, at 36k, I don't know how close I am to 50k over my lifetime. Am I 50 Doubloons away? 200? 3000? I could put in the effort to grind for that, but I don't know how much I would have to do while planning for a trip.

You've stripped away certainty and replaced it with doubt, and now it'll end up gnawing at me. If I don't end up with the sword on the deadline, I'll have to sit here, constantly wondering if I was just one more Gift away from getting it.

    Thumbs down.

Would you be feeling the same if you had converted those 112K+? Those players had just the same amount of "actual hard work and dedication" as you. They just happened to use the systems the game allows, because none of us are clairvoyant.

If your sense of "value" is based on a digital item in a videogame and others not having it, I think you need to re-assess some things.

(Also, your doubloons will be converted to gold anyway, just like those players already did)

  • Great move to lifetime earned. Now we just need a (temporary?) page on the website showing what our lifetime total is.

Also, maybe for the people with insane numbers above 50k, maybe you could put a notch on their sword for every 50k like you were doing with the Grogmanay tankards. Probably not worth the effort for the few people this will make happy but just throwing ideas out there.
