As revealed in the 2024 preview trailer, Season 14 is going to be a stealth and mischief themed update for Sea of Thieves. While the full roster of tools and mechanics aren’t set in stone and are still being developed, I think it’d be really cool to ponder some potential ideas that could be added and fit right in with the other features!
Ever since firebombs and blunderbombs were added, I’ve been really compelled on different types of throwable gear. Bone callers were an awesome idea and it got me back to thinking about what kinds of things we could lob at enemies!
Smoke Bombs:
I’ve always wanted a sort of smoke bomb that players could throw down to create a hazy cloud, obscuring vision and helping to hide players or make daring getaways or distractions in combat.
I imagine they’d work similarly to the smoke that Ashen Lords release; From outside the cloud, it’s difficult to see in or past it. While inside, your vision will be darkened, but you’re still able to see things inside and outside of the cloud, albeit a bit less clearly.
They’d have a fairly short timer, maybe only 5 to 10 seconds, and you could only spawn one cloud at a time per player, for lag/spam reasons. Could also have a toxic variant that does damage over time!
Paintbombs:
A glass jar filled to the brim with colorful dye, that can be thrown or fired from a cannon to splatter a beautiful mosaic in the faces and on the ships of your enemies. Enemies caught close to the impact will have a random color of paint splattered on their screen for a short time, about half as long as vomit lasts. In addition, when it strikes a ship, it will leave a colorful mess at the impact point that can persist between sessions, able to be washed away with rain or buckets, or cleaned by the Shipwright on Captained ships for free. This would be a really fun and novel tool to use, especially if you want to take a more comical approach in combat, or if you just wanna make a mess of a ship!
There could also be a variant called the Chunderbomb, that is literally filled with vomit and can make enemies sick when hit by it, potentially making enemy crews spew on each other in a chain reaction!
Another variant could be one that glows the iconic reaper red, which marks an enemy or ship hit by it on the map until the splatter washes away! This one could expire after say, 10 minutes if not cleaned.
