In the Pirate Legend Lounge a new building would appear by the shipwright, the painter. You could open his shop and find two tabs, one containing custom sails for 500k gold and a custom flag for 100k gold. The other tab would have shapes, gradients, patterns, and symbols available to buy for 5k each. The regular non-legend shipwright would have a new customization box you can interact with. It would let you paint a sail using a brush, and the ability to create your own color and select how vibrant it is. You can place the permanently unlocked patterns you bought on and change their color. I think it could be a main feature in a next update. Text could also be added without purchase but other font styles could be bought from the painter. Obviously we'd need a report option. I think it could be a cool way to interact with the community being able to share designs and earn gold and doubloons if people buy your sail design, which you could set the price of. I think the only advanced features we'd need would be an undo and redo button, a fill feature, and layering. The same would apply for the flag. If you played any Forza Horizon games you can tell I've based this idea off the livery customization feature in those games. It works really well in games like that because cars have different designs, I think it could be good on sails seeing as the ones in Sea of Thieves are very flashy and detailed. You could add your own flair to your favorite sets to make them unique, and your own.
Sail Customization
@funfettimtb couple issues
1 you've already mentioned it would open up room for abuse
2 depending on level of customisation it could get to point that custom sails are better or same as those on offer from emporium, which removes an income source for rare@hiradc
Well I mean emissary ledger sails are some of the best, I think it would take away the income source and thats fine, but it adds options to create revenue, I'm really glad you brought up the emporium because I thought of something. The emporium could add different sail types, the standard one you can buy is shaped like a regular sail. The emporium could offer ripped ones and such with different designs. They added guilds and ship names and anything with customization adds room for abuse so I dont think that would affect much.I think sail customization would have to be a very tailored experience, and be done correctly. I absolutely don't see them allowing people the same levels of agency in logo design as say, Black Ops/Black Ops 2 - people would absolutely abuse it.
Here's how it could work, and still benefit Rare:
The service itself would be a paid, emporium transaction (maybe like 400-500 ancient coins per custom sail design). The customization options are all presets, but allow the user a great bit of agency.
Customizations:
-
Sail Type (Tattered or Whole)
-
Primary sail designs (preset logos, color and shapes)
-
Complimentary/Secondary sail designs (preset logos, color and shapes)
I feel that this would be a solid way of handling it - allows for people to have some agency in their designs, it keeps to the Sea of Thieves style of designs, and also still provides another source of incoming money for Rare. They could even update the pool of logos/designs regularly to keep it fresh.
I know at one point Mike Chapman said that they've thought about the possibility of custom sails, but that it'd be tough to implement correctly, and also talked on the possibility of allowing custom designs in as part of a contest. So I guess we will see!

@funfettimtb customisation can have restrictions like the way the guild emblems have (from a choice of predetermined designs) so if this carried on to the sails, then yes your idea would be good. But if we have complete freedom to draw our own stuff, then it’ll be abused (check the map table every so often…).
Yes we can report bad designs but why add that extra liability in the first place when it’s easier to restrict?Also this is an open forum, I don’t have to give feedback.
