Suggestion for Upgradable Ship Components in Sea of Thieves

  • I propose the introduction of upgradable ship components, such as cannons, sails, ship hulls, anchors, and other aspects of the ship. These upgrades could be earned or purchased through in-game achievements, commendations, or a new in-game currency. Here's how the introduction of upgradable ship components could benefit the game:

    1. Customization and Personalization:

      • Allow players to customize their ships according to their playstyle and preferences. Upgradable components would provide a visual representation of a player's achievements and dedication to the game.
    2. Progression and Achievement:

      • Create a sense of progression by tying upgrades to in-game accomplishments. Whether it's defeating powerful skeleton ships, completing challenging voyages, or reaching certain milestones, players would feel a sense of achievement as they upgrade their ship.
    3. Tactical Advantage:

      • Different tiers of ship components could offer various benefits. For example, upgraded cannons could have increased damage or faster reload times, upgraded sails could enhance speed and maneuverability, and improved anchors could allow for quicker stops or even surprise maneuvers in combat.
    4. Economic Sink:

      • Introducing a new in-game currency or requiring a substantial amount of gold for upgrades could provide a sink for the in-game economy, encouraging players to engage in various activities to earn the currency needed for improvements.
    5. Community Engagement:

      • Encourage collaborative gameplay by introducing communal goals that require crews to work together to unlock certain upgrades. This could foster a stronger sense of community within the game.
    6. Pirate Legend Prestige:

      • Make certain high-tier upgrades exclusive to Pirate Legends, providing an additional incentive for players to strive for the prestigious title.
    7. Variety in Encounters:

      • Different ship configurations resulting from upgrades could introduce variety in encounters, making naval battles more interesting and strategic.
    8. Long-Term Player Retention:

      • The prospect of continual ship improvement would provide long-term goals for players, increasing retention and engagement over time.
    9. Ship-Based Matchmaking:

    • In conjunction with upgradable ship components, the addition of ship-based matchmaking would revolutionize the way pirates set sail together. Instead of a random assortment of players forming a crew, ship-based matchmaking would pair vessels with similar upgrade levels. This addition aims to create a more balanced and engaging multiplayer experience.

I believe the addition of upgradable ship components aligns well with the spirit of Sea of Thieves, where players are encouraged to embark on epic adventures, face challenges, and build their legacy on the high seas.

  • No tactical advantages, this isn’t a pay-to-win game. Everything is purely cosmetic and down to your own skill.

  • This goes against the entire premise of the game. The ideal is that the only thing an day 1 player with everything maxed has over a fresh install is skill, and while this is occasionally broken with convenience features, upgradeable ships is far too over the line.

Also, is it just me, or does this suggestion read like an AI wrote it?

    Because it is.

It as to be fair tho !
I completely agree with you on the idea of introducing different types of ships, but instead of evolving them, I think variations would be a more interesting approach. With the notion of not letting ships evolve, but rather introducing a "UP And DOWN" upgrade for a better balancing in-depth customization. you gain something but with a penalty, idk if you undersand ?

    **Canons**

●For instance, having the option to equip three cannons on the left but one cannon on the right. Stronger side with a counterpart with a weakier side

     **Wheel**

●choosing a heavier wheel that turns more slowly but withstands shocks better.

     **Sails**

●larger and heavier sails for improved speed but with a longer time to raise and angle them would provide intriguing strategic choices.

General boat variations would add a welcomed diversity to the seas, while requiring players to have their own ship to access these options. It would be fair and balenced

  • Allow players to customize their ships according to their playstyle and preferences.

9/10 everyone will go for Heavy power and Ultimate defense.

    Commendations?? Renown, Seasons? Trials Deeds?

Different tiers of ship components could offer various benefits. For example, upgraded cannons could have increased damage....

    Nope..

Encourage collaborative gameplay by introducing communal goals that require crews to work together to unlock certain upgrades

World Events, Community Day, that thing where Rare has a meter showing people doing a certain action on Twitter to increase the Payout....

    Pirate Legend Prestige

I like this. But make it for all Factions. Say once you reach lvl 100, drops back to 1 but you get a symbol to show you lvl up. Wait dont Guilds do this??

  • The only way I could see different tactical options working is either choices with large drawbacks to counter their advantages, or entire alternate ship choices with plusses and minuses built in.

Different sail shapes that reduce top speed in favor of acceleration, a tiller that reduces acceleration or speed in favor of turn speed, cannons with less range but less arc etc.

Keep in mind I dont see any of it happening though.
