Enabling Xbox's new gamertag system(?)

  • This one's a simple request. For the past 3 or so years, Xbox had rolled out a new system for gamertags that allowed for 4-digit numbers to be placed at the end of a name, allowing for over 10,000 identical names to be used by all sorts of different players, as well being comparable to the way discord used to handle their naming system.

I was wondering if Sea of Thieves were to try and take advantage of this (still relatively) new system in some sort of future update or two. It wouldn't necessarily improve the adventure experience by much, but it would certainly help with player identification more than anything. I find that it'd make for a nice QoL change in some future update down the line.

I dont see how tho...changing ones name.

But anyways, as a xbox user. Whatever Gamertag your using is your Pirate name...Idk how it works with Steam (I assume the same since you need an xbox account)
    Just change your gamertag?

  • @burnbacon
On Xbox the new gamertag system allows you to pick a name that's already taken but adds a semi-hidden number at the end.

    Discord has the same system.

If I want to be named Blunderbuss
Xbox would allow me to be named Blunderbuss#8865
When you view your profile your name would be Blunderbuss.

Some new games can pick up this semi-hidden number and remove it and you'd be seen as Blunderbuss.
In Sea of Thieves everyone would see Blunderbuss8865.

  • @vaughnsot Discord is abandoning the system. Your new name is yours and no duplicates. Mine is captaincoel. No one else can use it without adding numbers etc. and theirs would display that way.

  • @sprucerust Any numbers at the end of your Gamertag ARE part of your Gamertag.

The one that shows on the Xbox Profile is merely a display name.

  • @sprucerust unlikely considering reporting players, we’d be looking at the display name rather than the gamertag, helping players evade reports.

  • I would love to see this update. Even just including the # in the name would be better than the current system.
