Define Fun PvP

  • @soloslooperr
Come to think of it a solo server could get the ship count back to 6.
    It's galleys that hurt performance.

It's mostly the ships themselves, so I don't think it matters what the size of it is the flotation calculations are the same.

I think there's more to it than that, usually when the servers are bad it's a galley getting close to a other galley that makes them start to tank.

Might have to do with the number of players.

I'm just going off of what Rare has said, which is that ships are the biggest performance hit to the server.

  • Can we get back on topic?

  • My only issue with pvp is boarding from distance, like you said, once they board your ship from distance isn't a ship battle anymore...

  • Gotta say I agree with all of this, especially 1,2 and 3.

If 1 was fixed in particular I think you would have more people willing to interact both socially and in pvp. Your ship should be more of a safe space than it is now and people should have to work to get on board.

I think it would be helpful to the devs if people stated what they think fun PvP would be, compared to what we have now. I will toss out the obvious which is get rid of the cheats. That is probably a universal.

My Opinions (Solo Sloop Point of View Mostly):

    1. Boarding is too easy, once the boarding starts it is no longer a ship battle, it is plain old shooter PvP on ships, meh, boooorrring. If it were up to me I would add grappling hooks and the only way you could board is if one or the other ship first grapples the opponents.

    Boarding's really balanced right now.

    1. Friendly fire immunity is lame. I get that people could abuse it but IMHO the cost of preventing the abuse is worse than the abuse.
    2. Repairs on the sloop are too easy, I don't have enough experience on the other ships to know. On the sloop the battle can become a stalemate if both sides have the repair act in order. In other games it would be said "healing is OP".

Sloop being the strongest makes up for the lack of crewmates. Right now, some solo players stand a chance against 4 man galleys.

    1. I would like to see the HG circle get smaller every 5 minutes starting at the 10 minute mark, by 25% of the original size. So at 10 minutes, 75%; 15 minutes, 50%; 20 minutes 25%; and at 25 minutes, 0% both ships sink. The ship with the most existing water loses unless that crew can somehow bail the excess faster than the other crew. If neither ship has holes or water in the bilge then the crew that bails fastest wins.

Good idea, but don't shrink the map to 0%. It'd be better if it stopped at 10%.

To me, this would be fun and be worth doing as an activity, right now it is a grind.

I have been thinking about that for a while but as @xshirahx put it best: Trolls would be having a field day with this. Maybe this could work if both parties have that as an option enabled (In the same menu where you vote someone into the brig) or you'd have an option to challenge someone to a duel where friendly fire is enabled until someone goes down. This would be great for practicing close combat!

  • @kittykins2959 But are the trolls really worse than having an enemy standing on your ship next to you while you get knocked from the enemies cannons and they don't, in every single battle?

To me the troll problem would be occasional, where this happens all the time.

  • Either have Rare actually tell people the mechanics (abused glitches or not) of their game, or fix the glitches that the higher tiered PvPers are using.

    • I cannot stand that the PvP in this game is a restaurants hidden menu of mechanics that need to be learned if you want to get better. Yes you can learn how to aim your cannons and guns, but none of that matters when buddy and his 3 pals decided to click "buy food supplies" at the same time and end up with 25 pineapples, which is 250 times full health (in case you didnt know), and now you're trying to carve your way through a pineapple vacuum. Having good aim doesn't even help with that and almost forces people to double gun.

Do something about proper naval combat.

    • Too many times people would SPAM launching out of cannons in an attempt to board and murder because it was the "easier" option to just kill us and roll up and then fill us with holes. I understand that boarding is viable to help prevent people from fixing the holes, but that kinda makes sense to do AFTER you've damaged them and got close enough to deal with them.

    Balance the PvP.

    • Expanding a little on the first point. Pineapples, for example, are broken. When the next best fruit is mango (which doesn't even heal 1 shot from an eye of reach) the food balance makes absolutely no sense. Especially when people can buy pineapples and eat them twice. Sword blocking doesn't even work half the time (yes I understand it doesn't block from behind and certain angles, I'm not stupid).

    • The point of this isn't necessarily to suggest things are overpowered or underpowered either, it's simply to make it more fun or "fair feeling". Most sensible people don't care about winning as long as the game feels fair and it's fun. My guess as to why you have multiple posts about double gunning, general game balance, or PvP not being fun for one reason or another is because it simply doesn't feel fair to them. People like myself don't think we're the best in the game, far from it, but rather we think we're good enough to compete. It's a pvp game and the concepts are pretty simple, aim and shoot and eat when you get hurt, board to prevent repairs, etc. However there are times the game just feels unfair, between the hit reg, swords not blocking, black loading screen lengthened respawns, sword stuns being inconsistent. The list goes on and I'm not going to attempt to list everything because those who know, know.

  • @foambreaker I can somewhat agree in terms of the cannons, that should have friendly fire or at least knock fellow crewmates around too. (I thought that was already a thing, but now that I think about it, I honestly don't know if it already is) But if friendly fire were to include weapons such as cutlass, blunder, pistol and eye of reach then there should be a option for it. Thinking about open crews, it would definitely not be an occasional troll.

  • @kittykins2959 If they could do only cannon fire, that would be fine with me, in fact blunder would be especially messy.

  • @xshirahx what about the animation skipping on double gun? Is that getting sorted?
