The Battle Zone Should Shrink With Time!

  • Regarding s8 PvP battles:

Every 15 minutes or 10 minutes the zone should decrease in size, maybe by 25% or so.

Less space to maneuver means more broadsides and cannon barrages and less chance of long, drawn out fights.

If a fight lasts 45 minutes (eww) than the size of the circle could become so small that sailing OOBs would become very difficult to avoid, thereby bringing about a winner.

  • I don't like this idea.

This has a number of knock on effects I can see and it is trying to borrow this idea from a battle royale game which SoT is not and neither is this mode.

Forcing the zone to shrink is only going to lead to increased spawn camping to corner players and sail them out of the area.

It would not allow outside ships from sailing into the battle as easily which they are allowed and encouraged to do. This hurts the organic nature of adventure that they try to preserve even with the introduction of this mode.

It would also lead to more aggressive play and TDM.

Most players that enjoy the PvP want good and more importantly drawn out naval battles where skill vs skill is at play and your crew comes out on top because you were actually the better crew.

If you default a victory you are robbing them of all of that.

I keep hearing this idea parroted around the community and it might sound good on paper, but I truly think it is an awful, awful idea that will make the mode even less fun than it is and essentially turn it more towards the arena of old.

Drawn out pvp isn't really popular anywhere, especially this content that is built on having many fights in order to progress

Solo fights especially need some sort of support to move fights along, larger ships can put enough pressure to move fights along even when evenly matched.

Solo fights are held hostage intentionally by some players and drawn out by the effects of devs making boats and players on boats tanky to an unnecessary and often frustrating degree.

There are very few pvpers that prefer drawn out fights when they are actually having fights, very few people in general want drawn out fights when they are actually happening, in random adventure and in this on demand pvp stuff.

It's so unpopular that it was a significant contributor to people avoiding fights to begin with before season 8, people largely want things to move along, not draw things out to where everyone is just sitting around frustrating wanting it to end. Repeat fighting and drawn out fighting really isn't that popular.

Repair simulators get pretty old pretty fast and so does watching the opponent do laps around the pool while avoiding combat. The content is for people to engage, not slow down fights intentionally, solo doesn't have the resources to run ships down like larger boats.

Pretty much all competitions/events done in this game have had a design to move fights along and end them for a reason.

Outside of this content it's perfectly fine to do whatever people want, this content was built for opt in fighting and engaging. People are free to tank but they shouldn't drag on fights endlessly just waiting for people to quit, it's not good for the content and it only leads to less interest and close matches should have an ending that isn't waiting for someone to concede.

Dude...if your upset on having to battle long term fights. I fear for the human race.
No fight has ever ended within days, they are long fought out battles. Sometimes lasting years.

If you can't sink a ship within a good period, you must be doing something wrong on your end.

PvP players wanted battles, they got them but the moment they last too long. They dont want them. sigh

What about no ? This would encourage people to wait for this limit to bagin to fight.

Ever played solo sloop hourglass ? Guess you never had your wheel broken much ?

If a fight lasts 45 minutes

I'd have sink myself by now.

Maybe cause the allegiance gained is the same whether the fight lasts 2 minutes or 2 hours ? Just maybe ? (your condescending attitude may prevent you ffrom seeing the obvious, like here)

Again. This system is designed to favour short battles and streaks. Change that to "long battles" and "individual encounters" by tweaking the incentives and rewards, and not only do you gain more retention for this game mode, but also a healthier set of mind where people wouldn't feel like wasting their time if the battle lasts over 5 minutes.

I’m thinking these “shrinking battle zone” ideas are one solution of many, but not THE solution.

If a fight is drawn out, sure - we’d like them to end sooner - but that’s because the rewards are the same for a 5 minute vs a 50 minute fight.

I would much rather see increased reputation gains the longer fights last; something like a multiplier every 5-10 minutes. This way, a really long fight still awards me similar reputation as a bunch of really short ones for the same amount of time.

This could also encourage lesser players to also try harder at surviving longer for better reputation, ultimately training them up to hopefully one day also have the skills to fight back and win.

  • I'll say it again here, but something was suggested somewhere :

    • win or loss, reward bonus allegiance based on the supplies used by the other crew during the fight (only food and wood, not cannonballs)

    This would :

    • Deter running (hit stuff, if you're only repairing and eating, you're giving your opponent XP)
    • Reward long and epic fights (the fight lasted 1h+ but he used 50+ planks and 5 pineapples ? Good)
    • Not feel like a waste of time when the fight lasts more than 5 mins (OK he's running away to reset and I can't stop him from doing that ? It's a nuisance but hey, at least if I hit him more and make him use his supps, more XP for me...)
    • Entice people to play the mode (OK I know I'm bad/new and will probably sink 9 times out of 10 but at least if I can make him repair a bit....)
    • Deter loss farming (I was decided to farm only losses but if I can hahve a small bonus by shoting my opponent once or twice...)
    • Even toxic players (the ones that kkept your ship afloat just to sail it out of bounds before the update) will try to play risky, not using that much wood, for example...

And all of this would give lower-tier players enough confidence maybe to go back at it and actually improve
