Enabling Same Faction Battles

  • S8-matchmaking-changes

However, after a period of time where a match has not been found against a rival Faction, we will open up the search to include battles against a crew in the same Faction as you.

Well here we go. The team spirit of fighting the opposing faction being sacrificed for faster matchmaking. There are other ways of improving the queue times (giving bonus reward to less populated faction, making the starting position of hourglass random, introducing additional factions and letting them all fight each other - Sea Dogs could had been revived for that, placing Galleon crews against two duo sloops etc), but we have to remove the one cool part of pvp update that improved chances of cooperation. Disappointing.

  • bunches of participants were seeing people they knew and seeing people multiple times starting literally the first day.

That def shouldn't be happening day 1 and then day 2 and on with new content that was getting hyped, it's just not something that drives activity, it's qol for pvp, it was never really going to be what it was hyped to be, it doesn't appeal to enough different groups.

They gotta do what they gotta do to keep it moving, incentives are great but it was struggling since day one to get interest, incentives aren't enough.

  • Yay 2%!

Plus...you can still team up and cooperate.

I'd rather see less "whaaaaa pvp on demand takes too long" posts...

  • Well. Oh well.
As aspected for the future. When we get rid of Flameheart and the war is over, these battles are gonna need a new reason to be around.

So why not allow “fight anyone” idea?

  • @wolfmanbush It was to be expected that the mode would not be overpopulated.

    1. PvP in SoT stopped being fun when guns and animation-cancel double-gun meta got popular. It may be fun for the minority of players that do it, like streamers, but for the rest it's not fun being killed in a second.

    2. The carrot is large at the end, yet not large enough and cut in enough pieces for such anti-casual progression both in time and skill. Saying it's long-term goal isn't gonna magically make being killed for other players' amusemen fun - especially when you could be having fun in the game doing other activities. It just becomes long-term torture and so logically sane players are not bothering.

Pvp on demand itself is great addition. Yet it can't work well when the grind is so long and the journey tedious.

@BurnBacon Switching the experience from free for all to faction war is something SoT always needed to make the waters less bloody. FFA is just the same old bloodbath.

  • I dont think that fighting against reapers as athenas or visa versa is the one cool part. Im willing to bet that a lot of people would argue either emerging from the water, or battles on demand is the cool part, not what side you are facing.

  • I don’t think this is encouraging people to betray their faction, this is only for invasion battles. This should make sure the system is consistently working.

If this means you get rep for attacking other athena ships out on the open water, I’d have a problem. But if it’s just for invasions, it only helps.

  • I hope we will be able to sell athena emissary flags we earn from sinking other guardians to the mysterious stranger.

  • @unleet1 Unfortunately double guns have the best odds of winning so people are somewhat forced to use it to compete. There may be joy in winning, but the feeling of combat itself is no good.

@KlutchxKing518 It's all about subtle associations. When the war is Athenas vs Reapers crews are more likely to interact positively with their faction (even seen some pirates complain that there is pressure to cooperate and that they feel bad sinking in-faction). With the matchmaking changed to include same faction fights, crews of the same faction are just another source of progression without second thought.

this entirely depends on the scenario and the person playing

outside of being situational it's more of a stigma around the sword, people are unique in combat, everyone has their strengths and weakness with all weapons
