Stuck in the air due to Kraken event

  • Hi, you lousy, slobbering mongrels.

Today, I was playing gold hoarders emissary for about 3 hours or so. I had done the vault on Mermaid's Hideout and was travelling south, intending to steer eastwards to sell all my loot at Plunder when I ran into a Kraken encounter.

I didn't expect trouble (I've killed Kraken before), but this time was different. I was shooting the arms and everything seemed to go fine until... I got picked up by one of the arms. I got the animation with the mouth sorta closing around me and expected to get spit out. That didn't happen.

Instead, the arm just disappeared and I got stuck in the air. I could no longer defend my ship or move or jump or kill myself. I wasn't taking damage and the game didn't seem to register me as stuck either (respawning me in my ship).

So, I basically had to watch my ship sink with all my loot gained from the last 3 or so hours. I couldn't reclaim that loot because the only way to escape my predicament seemed to be to leave the game. And so I did.

I recorded a video after my sloop went down (to have something to show support).

As a new player who very much enjoys the game when it works, I still have to admit that these kind of bugs are definite motivation killers in terms of sticking with the game. Not long ago, I encountered a bug where I did not get paid for selling my loot haul. I don't mind players killing and robbing me (it's a fair cop), but it sometimes feels like the bugs are out to get me. I got a job that's not youtubing SoT-content and I also got kids and limited time with this game, so I want the time I have to mean something more than an excercise in futility.

So anyways, I hope you'll excuse my complaining. Now: being still limited in my Kraken experience, is this common? Does anyone have a tip to how I can avoid this bug in the future?

It's a bug that's been around for awhile and it doesn't happen all the time, which is probably why it's still in the game - hard to reproduce steps make it hard to eliminate.

Just go below deck while one of the limbs is trying to suck you off of the deck, you'll never get pulled up into the air and as a result can't get stuck.

If you do get stuck again, force close the game and restart it. This should give you the option to rejoin your session, which will hopefully place you back on the ship before it sinks.

Such an easy, elegant solution. Thanks, D3ADST1CK!

  • Team work!!

  • @beatrman

    Harpoon to the rescue!!

Although I think OP was solo at the time...

  • Hiding below deck is a valid way to avoid it but also if you hit the tentacle thats getting ready to suck with just one cannonball it will retreat that tentacle. Just gotta be proactive

  • Yes this is an old bug from when they first added the kraken to the game, as others stated go below deck (or captain quarters on the galleon) to avoid getting sucked up and use the sniper and or pistol to do some damage to it if you have line of sight on that one. If you have one or more crew on your ship at the time the harpoon can be used to pull you back to the ship if it has line of site as well.

  • Thanks for more useful replies. I can confirm that I was flying solo.

I asked for recompense from Rare for the hours of treasure hunting lost (arr, gimme gold) and while they answered me with an email they were looking into it (Kraken bug), they conveniently didn't address my request for compensation.

If you're you're not gonna be good at squashing bugs that screw people over, I do think you should at least get good at repairing relationships with players.
