To "The" or not to "The"

  • So far I have not yet bought a ship (been sailing on my kids' captained ships) but I am very much stuck on how to name my new gold- and time-sink. Traditionally there is no "The" in a ship name; the The-less name (like "Clueless Noob") is painted on the hull and everyone looks and says "Oh, there's the 'Clueless Noob'". However, in SoT it seems that whenever the name is displayed in-game, it is exactly as entered; if I want "The Clueless Noob captained by Sn0kanon" I will have to name it "The Clueless Noob".

Reckon I am overthinking this, but does anyone else have any thoughts/experience/real sea dog knowledge to share about how they named their ship?

  • I excluded 'The'.

  • not to the

and I don't use titles either

I like it nice and clean

  • "The Clueless Noob" is most apt. Because only a clueless noob would include “the” in the name a ship.

The one exception is I know of is a former US navy ship called “The Sullivans” which was named after four brothers killed in a single naval action. The “The” referred to THE brothers - not the ship herself.

  • @sn0kanon iv done both my galleon is “the” less and my brig has “The”
    Galleon: Smuggler’s Cask
    Brig: The Rogue’s Gambit

  • Historically, most ships didn't have "the", but the game is set up in a way, that either "the" or no "the" is fine. There will be no "the the" on the seas, unless you make one yourself.

    Personally, I went without.

  • The real question is does the game remove The if you include The.. I think someone said the game automatically adds "The" to the banners so if someone looked at you through a spyglass or boarded your ship it would be like "The The Black Pearl"

  • @roborob-r66y I have not seen a banner yet with “The” added. Presumably Rare decided that was more predictable, preventing a bunch of “the The”s without additional coding (not to mention it’s probably a huge pain for localization).

The game doesn't add it anywhere. If you add a title, it would become The Black Pearl, The Mighty

  • By normal means, everyone I know of always says "The" followed by the ship name.
So...if I start seeing "The Flying Hunter" Im gonna claim it as, The "The Flying Hunter"
Sounds silly but that how I read it.

  • I believe that the The in the name of a ship is automatically implied and doesn't need to be added. If you look up most ship naval vessels when the name is printed on the ship they rarely use The in the title. The ship is considered a entity itself. It's like placing The in front of a persons name.

  • Yeahhh... No "The"

My ship is the Melodic Marauder... The the is implied.

  • Good point about localization! If I name my sloop “John B”, to an English speaker it would be The John B, to a Frenchman, Le John B, to a Spaniard El John B, etc.

So "hoist up the John B sails. See how the main sail sets.
    Call for the Captain ashore
Let me go home, let me go home
I want to go home, yeah yeah
Well I feel so broke up
    I want to go home"

    Epic song!

  • @sn0kanon no to using the word "the" in the ship name. For my crew when we see ships with it, we sink them regardless and inform them they should not use the word "the".

  • To The Or Not To The - great ship name! It's even 20 digits! 😅

  • @galactic-geek frickin’ genius!

‘Cept I would be hunted into eternity by @Captain-Coel 😥

  • By the way, for the record this thread pretty much confirmed my inclination to not use “the”. Appreciate the discussion!

The To The Or Not To Be is the perfect example to not to be the.

  • Mine is The Lupine Corsair so I guess that I am for the The . Although I didn’t agonise about whether to include a ‘The’ but eventually decided to fort personal preference as I’m a solo slooper so I don’t often have a crew.

  • @sn0kanon as a writer I wouldn't use "the" on a name. It's usually Implied when someone is talking about it.

Saying that I did call my sloop "The Raven"

    My brig is "Ruby Dancer"
