Pacifist mode for story missions

  • Since Arena got removed the normal mode is basically unplayable in my opinion. You park on an isle to do a quest and some randoms start sinking your empty ship even if there is no loot on board. It's just to grief us. Today we got sank like 10 times without having loot and just trying to enjoy the quests.
My idea would be to get a "pacifist" mode. If one puts the white flag all crew members as well as the ship get immune to pvp damage but also can not deal pvp damage. (being emessary for any fraction removes the ability to put on the white flag). This would help to reduce the toxicity and griefing ingame and also make the game more enjoayable for player who just want to experince a sailing game and the stories connected to the world. Lately I really feel like my gaming experince is suffering and I feel more frustrated than enjoying the gaming. Switching server often does not help, since almost every sever has at least one ship whoich plays like that.

  • I'd much rather that they move all of the Tall Tales (since that's what I assume you're referring to) over to their own servers where there is otherwise no progression or loot whatsoever.

Just 5 (or 6) ships sailing around together with the ability to progress only in Tall Tales.

  • @sirguyxiii3268 Or you know watch the horizon and keep an eye out for ships.

  • In my experience, if you're trying to do Tall Tales and are getting chased, most pirates will respond favorably to a bribe.

Cannon over, tell them you're doing Tall Tales, and offer for them to come loot your supplies. Easy peasy.

  • @sirguyxiii3268 that’s fine as long as you get zero commendations, zero gold, zero doubloons, and absolutely nothing out of it except for the experience

  • The white flag feature as introduced by RDR online can't work in a game based on players' interaction. In SOT everytime you join a session you take on risks and rewards. Just keep a weathered eye in that horizon while following your path.

There is no peace for pirates, until Davy Jones' watery embrace!

  • @sirguyxiii3268 The problem with a 'pacifist' mode, is that any so-called griefing could be even worse. Someone can board your ship and sail it away, and because you've turned off PvP, you can't stop them. Or they could keep anchoring your ship when you try to move and you wouldn't be able to stop them. They would have free reign to do whatever they want on your ship.

If they were going to do anything with Tall Tales, then they should probably be instanced, like the PotC ones, however, the normal Tall Tales take place on islands within the game world, so they'd have to instance the entire map, rather than a small area like PotC, which I doubt they would do.

Given that you have checkpoints on Tall Tales these days, having your ship sunk isn't really as much of a problem. At worse, you just sail to your current/next location and carry on.

Some of us completed all the Tall Tales five times before checkpoints were even a thing!

I wish you luck in your future attempts to complete these!

  • @robby0316 that would be very fair. It's just really annoying to be stuck at at a Tall Tale and redoing the same part over and over again just because some Galleon decided to do a drive-by at your anchored sloop.

  • @sweetsandman This idea is even better! But wouldn't it be more work for the devs though - implementing new servers just for Tales instead of adding something to the current game mode?

  • If you could only wish for such a mode they already made their mind up no PvE only mode and no more Arena PvP mode. :(

  • Post lockdown in a second probably due to the near PvE server nature of the request, but idk, claiming the "inb4 lock" ticket here just in case!

I could potentially see instanced Tall Tale servers, like they tested for APL, limited to tall tales (which I think they said no to anyway)...

but this is the MOST BROKEN way of """"fixing"""" this issue I've ever seen

You park on an isle to do a quest and some randoms start sinking your empty ship

That's your own fault for leaving it there and not checking your surroundings.

even if there is no loot on board. It's just to grief us

How do you know they checked if you had loot or not? You were on the island, no?

If one puts the white flag all crew members as well as the ship get immune to pvp damage but also can not deal pvp damage

So if you vote it up at the start of a session you just get a free pve server for as long as you're using that flag...? What's to stop players just trolling by taking everything off of your ship too? What's stopping you from taking things off of their ship and holding it not being able to get killed with it? This is the most game breaking sentence in your entire post.

This would help to reduce the toxicity and griefing ingame

I feel like toxicity and griefing are being blown up to bigger proportion that actually what occurred. Toxicity is most commonly from mic or text communications, not actions, which is what the griefing is, but the only griefing in this game is red sea running and spawn camping (assuming it's not to secure a sink, but "just because"), which both benefit nobody in a situation in any way, so is harmful to the gameplay cycle...

Being sunk 10 times (assuming it's over a long time period and by different crews....??) isn't a situation that breaks the gameplay cycle; it's a part of the game you signed up for. Sinking will happen, and has happened, to everyone, no way to get better without taking a loss.

  • Ahoy, going to be dropping anchor on this thread as there is a post about Rare's thoughts on PvPvE (including a link to the Sea of Thieves Podcast that discusses it) here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/136693/pvpve-the-team-s-thoughts/1

You can read an article by Joe here in regards to Private/Custom Servers.

    Thank you.
