The Mystery Begins!

  • I say we may have to wait abit.
Give time for players to discover the spyglass…
Because we found it rather quickly XD

Maybe this weekend or next week something will be revealed

  • Anyone else notice only 3 of the coins with arrows on them are on the X side while the rest are the skull side? Maybe they triangulate somewhere?

  • @stegalin Well, if we single out those ones, those ones being Discovery Ridge, Sea Dog's Rest and Crook's Hollow, we end up with this.

    alt text

  • hmm… what‘s with the two silver coins at The Glorious Sea Dog?
And I am still trying to figure out the meaning of „I just need to switch the skulls“. What skulls? The skulls of Harry Handles and William Davies? Or is she talking about the skulls which are on the coins?

  • I think what the next step is is to wait for Lesedi to 'switch the skulls' like she mentioned in the video. We found where her spyglass is, and it seems like after she's done with that something is gonna happen where we can finally use this spyglass. I can't think of anything else or anywhere else to use this spyglass on... :(

  • I had 2 ideas to no use yet. Might help others.

    1. Do you think the coin letters and number of coins per letter indicate locations on the map?
    2. Coins have X and Skull sides that may be relevant.
    3. Number of coins might allude to time of day in relevance to arrow.

I've tried these at Sea Dog's Rest to no avail. Again might help someone else. Though I am having a great time with this. It may also be nothing more in game than the spyglass atm. It would be far better to have everything in already so players aren't guessing if there's anything to actually discover yet.

  • @icytid3s i felt like the skulls in question were in some sort of location in the realm of the ferry and she was using them to send messages back out. OoS helped by retrieving one of the messages. Just my thoughts.

  • @quietrobot Where is this located?

  • I might have stumbled upon something, but I'm not sure if it's new or not. Have these skulls always been on this tree? I'm over at Castaway Isle.

@capt-brookes Interesting thought. Perhaps it is a way to make the community wait until something else is done by her (aka, "the devs")

I interpreted as she was unable to accomplish that task and WE had to switch "the skulls". I thought the two coins in SDT were pointing to their location, but I didn't come up with anything in my search.

The one coin definitely is pointing in the direction of uncharted K-9 island, but the other doesn't quite align with uncharted N-13.
Regardless, aimlessly pointing the spyglass at things in these locations led to nothing of interest.

EDIT: Can you interact with those skulls at all?

No there's no prompts to interact with them. I thought maybe those skulls may be a clue, and I used the spyglass and aligned the eye with them in certain spots. Didn't turn up anything at all.

  • Ok here's my wild-brain theory,

The video message she left mentions "I know where the lies are buried, this message should find you there".. meaning we should find THIS message(or a least the lantern with the skull on top featured in the video) at whatever location these arrows are pointing us to.
Once in our possession we SWITCH the skull on top with another one (nearby?). That in turn will give us a new message telling us where to aim the spyglass, dig, and find where the "lies are buried".

I know the coins initially eluded to the location of the spyglass, but she says "Use my spyglass, follow the coins". To me, we need to get the spyglass first THEN follow the coins. The coins obviously serving dual purpose then.
Follow them where, and to what order... there's the rub.

I'm currently looking closer at the video to see if any location details can me taken from it; that may or may not align with some of the arrows.

  • That kinda struck me curious too. Use my spyglass is mentioned before follow the coins. Maybe we need to follow one direction at the Sea Dog tavern, follow the route, find ??? and then do the same with the other direction?

Also @twistedstisster does that mean we need to get the lantern out again? I tried to find where the notes were before, but they're all gone when you use the lantern again.

I'll need to hop on when I get back from work later tonight and see where the coins can lead me if I follow the paths from the tavern.

  • @capt-brookes said in The Mystery Begins!:

Also @twistedstisster does that mean we need to get the lantern out again?

I don't think so. Personally I think it's all about the coins and the spyglass. Still, I do pull out the lantern just in case I'm missing something, but I don't expect to find anything.

My question is, if we follow the arrows, does it start and end at SDT? making a loop? if we trace them all on a map, does it "Draw" something out? I know Experementor did something like that below. Nothing stands out to me.

  • @d3adst1ck said in The Mystery Begins!:

@lululinn That effect is just a glitch with the lighting system. I'm pretty sure the trapmaker spyglass from the Tall Tale does the same thing.

The spyglass should be used to locate a dig spot somewhere in the world. The problem is that we don't know what we are supposed to focus the eye on. Also not sure whether the greyed out nose and other eye are supposed to focus on something else, which would ensure we get the correct angle.

The markings look more like a geographical height map then a lighting glitch. I haven't been able to find any screen shots of the trapmaker spyglass to compare the two however.

I don't think it should be dismissed as just a glitch so readily.

  • I saw a few photos here where the person determining the direction the coin is pointing to is holding the compass passively to show the direction. I just want to point out that the compass needle does not move between holding passively and holding it in your face, but passively does not point in the same direction, because you hold it off to the side a bit. This may have thrown off the map lines that were previously posted if they were determined just by holding the compass passively.

    I hope this makes sense.

  • @stegalin Yeah that was something Id thought about when the map was reposted. These lines could be inaccurate. Its not like it prompts you to place your compass down next to the coins and take a heading. So if there's a point of interest near a line, or near a cross section, then its worth exploring.

  • For the sake of argument. I popped over to Plunder Valley and grabbed the Trapmakers Spyglass again. It lacks any artifacting. I do recall seeing weird lighting issues with it when I last did that tall tale. But whatever it was is gone now. I cant produce any artifacting with it the same way we did with Lesedi's Spyglass.

The Following is some image comparisons.

    1. Trapmakers
    2. Lesedi
    3. The Shape of the Artifacting inside of the eye. Compared with Thieves Haven.

    Trapmakers Spyglass Sample
    Lesedi's Spyglass
    Comparison with Thieves Haven

I will also add. That I took these screenshots looking at the exact same angle for both spyglasses. I could not produce even slightly similar visuals on the Trapmakers Spyglass.

    I hope this makes sense.

It does. I've spent some time using the arrows trying to redraw lines on the map. Without being able to independently verify each direction from the photos (atm), I've been pretty liberal with my angles; trying several combinations to see if any pattern or path appears. Nothing seems to be manifesting. It almost starts to look like a star but quickly falls apart.
Most coins point to an island with another coin (or two with liberal angles), the kicker is that Crooks Hollow (R) and the Howling Wolf (P) don't even come close. It breaks any through line I could try to make.

I feel I need go confirm these directions to see if any are more off than I accounted for.

If anyone has any suggested connection let me know.

Also, I just tried rearranging the letters of PRISONER regardless of arrow pointing.
I get "RR IS OPEN" or "RS IN ROPE"
So...ya know... that's busting this mystery wide open. LOL.

  • Okay, soooo... something I should have mentioned before that was rather silly. When people said they found the spyglass I was tinkering with the pile of coins at Sea Dogs Rest and tested something out. At first I thought it was arranged in the letter N but then I had another thought:

From the way the coins were lined up, I decided to look at the arrangement while facing North. Doing so I went back to my map and circled the grid in the same style the coins were lined up. It was odd sure, but after circling the last coin, with the way it was pointing, it seemed to have lead me to Crooked Masts.

Again it sounds rather crazy, but that's how I found that out :p

EDIT: I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING! (Apologies if you guys already knew this) The coin at the Sea Dog Tavern pointing North by North West was supposed to lead us to the Howling Wolf ship wreck, which lead us to the letter P and the next arrow!

Why did it take me this long to find that out?! x.x

  • @twistedstisster if you need a place to start I would say check the directions like this against the 3 coins/islands that have the X side up with the arrow and see if they triangulate better than the current map. That’s my best guess at this point. A small area already exists, if all three are shifted slight counter clockwise currently to account for the difference they currently all point to everyone’s favorite island, Old faithful. But that is me eyeballing it.

  • There haven't been any clues found in the Shore of Gold, have there?

  • I've glued together a large map with all islands marked and named for us to use. I hope it proves useful. Next step is to go through and mark out islands and directions indicated by coins as accurately as we can.

    alt text

  • @finsup220 Doesnt hurt to check but it wouldn't make sense storywise because it's implied we travel to the shores of gold way before demarco died - seing as the skull of the gold hoarder is used in adventures that in turn reference demarco's death.

  • Started to bring in details into the map. marked islands with corresponding letter and the side the coins are marked on.
    alt text

  • I tried to update the map.
Red line for the coins with the skull.
Yellow line for the coins with the x.
Green line for the coin at Sea Dog Tavern.

    Alt. Text

  • @icytid3s Nice. Yeah I got confused about Howling wolf at first as that's where the letter P is. And not only have we not zeroed out on the dagger tooth, the triangle actually got larger. And now that I finally jumped at the skele throne at the marauder's arch too...
Actually, my line seems like it would end up crossing over Shark Bate Cove at the far end. Which makes it miss Shark Fin Camp, as well as the Sea Dog Tavern, but go directly over Shipwreck Bay. I'll visit all 8 when I have time and see what my map ends up like for comparison.
weird. Still, chances are we're missing something.
