@riftenwatcher There's also footsteps that lead to a riddle that get you a cool lantern!
The Mystery Begins!
Hello,
So Grumpywolf and I have been working on this together and today I found something that finally gets us on track. Others have mentioned it but here it is. Sea dog's rest has changed. After the 2000 retweets, the island has changed. First of all, Lesedi is here now she seems to be sad about his death so scratch her from the suspect's list. Most importantly the music box is now playing the same music in the second tweet from Rare. Then I noticed that there were footsteps leading to something, it was a letter. You can see it in the photos below. But it has A riddle that says from Red shell into water deep. It's pretty easy to figure out (I won't tell you how). Once you do you get a lantern that seems to give you the ability to see things similar to the lantern from the "A Pirate's Life" tall tale. And as you will see when you walk to the body of Demarco an eerie message "Who Killed Demarco." I assume we need to take this lantern to other places to discover more Clues. Let's get to the bottom of this guys.
@criminalsolid39 I assumed we'd have to search around as well but it seems Rare has chosen possibly the most boring route for this and we need to get the new tweet to 3,000 likes.
Ugh they are so close to greatness with this it's so frustrating
Seriously??? I just spent hours on Sea Dogs Rest trying to activate something with snakes killing me, getting drunk and suddenly, the island changed and there were footsteps and Lesedi. And I thought, wow, I must have triggered that. But retweets????? I am not continuing this if retweets are the way to "solve" the mystery!
@reznor-tph Indeed! I was thinking of getting the lantern to check key islands, yet it seems to be locked under the media wall requirements.
@grumpyw01f
The symbol kind of looks like a Battlegill to me. I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks that or not though.I found a clue by complete accident. After scuttling our ship we were at put at shark bait cove. Specifically the northwest outer island. We thought we may as well take a look with the new lantern and what did we find? A note stuck to a wooden gravestone by a dagger that only appears while the lantern is equipped. The Note said…..Of course it is, right from the start, it has been.
@criminalsolid39
Check the Sea of Thieves Murder Mystery wiki page. People have found a bunch of messages on various islands next to tombstones.Okay yeah the bit where we needed to retweet things is kinda silly in my opinion. I'd say they could have had it to where if someone found a clue and posted it from all the clues Rare posted THEN things would progress through.
I am however glad to see Lesedi is okay.... ish. I feel bad that she's in a wreck, but we'll find out who killed her brother so help me!
@tatapolus @satanicnemesis @reznor-tph @metal-ravage
The retweets are kind of boring... but it's better than not knowing when the next clue is at all.
The clue is "Seek the Dead." We can still jump on that while waiting for the next mission.@grumpyw01f Yes that leads you to graveyards through different islands. The one at Flintlock was interesting...
"You're the last person I expected to see out here. Don't tell me you're becoming sentimental after all this time? You said yourself we were done. He made that perfectly clear. So? I lied. This isn't a joke. Of course it is, it has been, right from the start. Just listen, none of this feels right..."
hmmmmm
Sounds like Demarco may have been discussing something, or maybe someone was discussing about killing Demarco in the first place. If it's the latter then one of them has to be our killer.
With that all in mind still no clue on what any of the other clues meant: The NEWS in the video, the 1989 album, and now a discussion? What could it all mean...?
I agree, I'm not a fan of the social media strategy Rare is utilizing. If I'm being honest, it feels a little unprofessional.
@capt-brookes, @GrumpyW01f
I'm of the opinion the conversations we have access to are between the murderer (like you mentioned, Capt. Brookes) and a third party. (I still don't think it's Amaranta. Maybe someone from the Dark Brethren?) I think the "He" in the Flintlock Peninsula quote "He made that perfectly clear" is Flameheart Jr. I will say though, I can't shake the feeling that we are in for a plot twist of some kind. (I don't think it will be as wild as Captain Falcore's theory, but has anyone seen Dimitri since the Sea Dogs closed?) I'm also certain we can take Lesedi's name off the suspect list. I hope they don't kill her too. I feel like Rare could use her character for a future project.Okay so I'm pretty new to this and I'm pretty sure what trifles I've found have already been discussed by those much smarter and more on their game than I am, but here goes.
-Footprints and a note leading away from DeMarco's resting place. The note reads, "From red shell into waters deep, the truth shall be revealed" (or something along those lines.) I swam all around the island, pretty deep, and I couldn't find anything. Perhaps I took that hint too literally?
-The music box by his body has begun to play "Seek the Dead". I thought maybe the Ferryman might know something, but that's been a dead end (so far).
-There are some drawings stashed in rocks at the Reaper's Hideout, I'm not sure if they were there before because I barely ever go to Reaper's. Any veteran Reapers who know the island, feel free to correct me if they have always been there.
As many of us know, Lasedi is now at Sea Dog's Rest. I happened upon her today and it absolutely broke my heart to see her like that. I left her a fruit crate, some silks, and a chalice I found while rooting around the island.I have no idea what I'm doing or what people have found out so far but I am excited to see where it goes. Cheers!

“On Lone cove if you use the Fallen Sea Dog lantern by the grave to the northeast in the graveyard a note with a dagger appears and reads “You’re the last person I expect to see out here.” There is also a blue ritual skull with a gold hoarder key symbol in the cave by the rowboat.” (Video and text quoted from shadow gamer AB)
@courtingnose1 From the clue "Seek the dead" it's obvious that you have to check the graveyards in different islands.
@metal-ravage This is essentially what the wiki says about it. (By the way these aren’t the only gravestone clues as I removed some of more well hidden ones if you want the full version go to the wiki page)
“When the tweet captioned "Are we seeing things?" reached 2000 retweets, a number of occurrences began to happen immediately.The music box on Sea Dog's Rest begins to play Seek the Dead on repeat.
A sorrowful Lesedi appears on the north west beach. When spoken to she says "I can't... not right now... Just leave me alone...".
Footprints lead from the music box to a nearby note behind a rock. The note reads "From shell of red into water of deep, the truth shall come to light...".
A red shell on the south east beach points towards an Old Sailor's Chest underwater in the ocean.
When interacted with, the chest permanently rewards the Fallen Sea Dog Lantern to keep.
The Fallen Sea Dog Lantern can be used to reveal text written on the north beach reading "WHO KILLED DEMARCO?".
The lantern can be used to reveal notes attached to graves on islands all over the Sea of Thieves.
You're the last person I expected here. (Lone Cove)
You thought I'd just let this go. (Wanderer's Refuge)
You said yourself we were done. (Crooked Masts)
So? I lied. (Kraken's Fall)
Just listen! None of this feels right... (Ruby's Fall)
Don't tell me you're becoming sentimental after all this time. (Sunken Grove)
This isn't a joke! (Thieves' Haven)
Of course it is. Right from the start, it has been. (Shark Bait Cove)
He made that perfectly clear. (Flintlock Peninsula) “I think the question we should really be asking ourselves isn't "Who killed DeMarco?" but rather "Why kill DeMarco?", and I think by solving that question we can easily deduce who killed him and what they gain out of it so lets think up of possible candidates and possible motivations they have.
The Reapers (and Flameheart): They could be a likely candidate to murdering Demarco but why? The Reapers and the Sea Dogs don't really seem to ever interact with one another nor have any reason to attack the other, the possibility however might be because of Lesedi. Think about it, Lesedi finding out her brothers death would render her really emotionally unstable and as such easy to manipulate so if the Reapers killed DeMarco, then they can just tell Lesedi that "Your father was the one who took your brothers life" and because of her emotional state, she might end up believing them and consider joining the Reapers side as a result, unaware of the truth behind her brothers death.
The Dark Brethren: Another possibility with most likely the same reason as the Reapers, to manipulate and recruit Lesedi.
Amaranta: The reason would be fairly obvious, she absolutely despises DeMarco so she has a good enough reason to kill him, but she also hates his sister as well so why leave her? Of course there is the possibility that whilst Rare is hinting towards Amaranta, I'm going with a bet that this is a Bait and Switch and that Amaranta didn't kill DeMarco, its a trope I know all too well.
Lesedi: Lesedi herself could be the one who killed DeMarco, after all he did close the Arena without telling her so she would be pretty mad about that. Heck its a possibility that she killed DeMarco not on purpose but possibly accidently in a fit of rage and after realising what she's done, well she breaks down completely with guilt over her killing her brother, either that or she's faking her grief.
The Pirate Lord: The Pirate Lord himself could be another candidate given what DeMarco said about meeting his father soon, its likely that the Pirate Lord killed DeMarco at the latters request to join with him, maybe with the possibility of requiring more help and perhaps a way to enter the Sea of the Damned to find a way to beat Flameheart for good, alternatively the Pirate Lord could have killed him out of malicious intent though highly unlikely.
Stitcher Jim: This is the one I deem very unlikely but still a possibility, Stitcher Jim could have been the one to kill DeMarco and its not out of the question for him to do so out of revenge against the Pirate Lord, it makes sense in a way because whilst Lesedi is the more vicious one (making her more dangerous), DeMarco has a more flamboyant and kinder personality meaning he's likely less of a threat and a very easy target.
DeMarco himself: Yep, I'm going with the possibility of DeMarco having killed himself and as to why though, it could be any number of things such as joining with the Pirate Lord or even acting as a spy against the Reapers, alternatively he could be pulling a Stanley (Anyone whose read IT or watched remake films would know what I'm talking about) in which his death is meant to act as motivation for everyone to unite together against a common enemy.
Alternatively it could be none of the ones I suggested and it might be someone unexpected or even someone we've never seen before, guess we'll just have to wait and see.
@lucky11
That's the feeling I got from the notes, too. A third party forcing someone to murder DeMarco. Someone who used to work for them and thought they were done. This makes me think it's not Amaranta, because if contracted, she would have no problems killing DeMarco... unless she's the mastermind.
The "He made that perfectly clear" makes me think it's the Servant talking about Flameheart.
I'm eager to find more clues and connect some dots.
