Sometimes when I'm trying to talk to another crew, their voices end up being very low, even with the game's sound settings maxed out. Using the system that writes on the screen often doesn't help, as the technology is good, but my language has a lot of commonly used slangs, so sometimes it's hard to understand what others say.
My idea would be to use the speaking trumpet as a hearing aid. Instead of using it to speak quietly with another crew member, change this option to put it in the ear and be able to hear the sounds with a greater volume.
