Field of View needs to be able to go higher to mitigate motion sickness. Even 100 would be helpful.

  • Plain and simple: some people (perhaps a significant number) experience motion sickness when playing with lower FoV numbers.

    People can claim that its drummed up or fake, but I promise you, just as some people get motion sick in cars, or sea sick on boats, or air sick on planes, or motion sick in VR; you can absolutely get motion sick with FOV that is too low.

    Also, I'm not even sure that it's an issue with the "90" FOV value. I believe that there may be a miscalculation of the FoV in ultrawide setups. If I'm not mistaken, one of the previous fixes was to edit a userspace file and change the FOV calculation from the X-axis to the Y-axis on the monitor. This would base the FOV on the vertical part of the aspect ratio, not the horizontal (which is equivalent between ultrawides and normal monitors, 21:9 vs 16:9). The 21 part of that aspect ratio may be causing the same FoV values to appear much lower on widescreen setups.

    This has been talked about for years. Just do a reddit search or a Google search.

    Regardless of past "community fixes" or "bannable offenses" (I'm not addressing any of that), this game sorely needs a higher FoV slider. We're not even talking about anything excessive, just up to 100 or 105.

    Some people claim that the artificial limit is based around the available aspect ratios on TVs and consoles. Because consoles can't utilize higher FOV efficiently (or perhaps due to technological limitations?), they artificially restrict in the application. This of course applies to PCs too, because the application doesn't seem to differentiate or hasn't been told to differentiate between PC and non-PC environments.

    Regardless of the true reasoning, development is intentionally ignoring part of their userbase and not addressing a problem. They could add a method/function to increase FOV support for all players or just certain environments.

    They have two approaches:

    • Ignore the problem and leave some people unhappy and most indifferent.
    • Add a way to address problem, and leave some people happy and most indifferent.

    Seems pretty obvious that one approach has a higher net positive outcome?

  • The FOV modification for Steam players was never intentional and has been removed in order to restore the intended settings of Sea of Thieves.

    There are no intentions to change this in future.
