Okay so a lot of people say that it’s a bannable offense, others say it isn’t.. what is the real answer I’ve been thinking about playing with it cause it seems less cluster phobic but I’ve never put it on yet. My friend has it and she says it isn’t bannable but again not sure. I would honestly like a response from someone that works at Rare, works on the game, or knows a lot about rare to answer this question so I know for sure. Thank you!
I’ve seen a lot of this and I have a question about 120 FOV...

@mferr11 oof well my friend is now wanting to take it off. Is there any way too?
Probably uninstall then reinstall. Would remove the modded file.
@stormforcer don't kid yourself - if Xbox players had the ability to exploit some of them would to. It is a sad human nature that some folks find the need to cheat.

Just shows pc players cheat
Guess you don’t know about the device that allows Xbox players to stay in Xbox controller lobbys with a keyboard and mouse...
@kommodoreyenser These devices also give you sticky aim assist on both mouse and controller; these peripheral devices tend to be a lot more prevalent than people using altered game files.
@punchytootle said in I’ve seen a lot of this and I have a question about 120 FOV...:
@kommodoreyenser there aren't any "controller lobbies"
Incorrect. If you have cross play opted out and you connect a keyboard and mouse, it will in fact force you into cross play servers. That is unless you use a certain box that spoofs a controller signal...

Yes, it is. The sad thing is that Iron recently made a video saying it is not bannable and everyone believed him over Rare.
I never said it's not bannable lol. It's a bit of a gray area and to be honest I'm not sure if it is. Technically it shouldn't be because it isn't ACTUALLY against the rules in any of the TOS and user agreements for sea of thieves, xbox, and microsoft. Although Rare does have a bit of a reputation for falsely banning players just because of spam reports.
@ironn-yt Yeah but still the amount of people who actually believe you are correct about this actually did it lol... imagine
Imagine using scare tactics of banning people for 120 FOV when it's natively supported on ultra-wide monitors... Sea of Thieves even promoted playing with Ultra-wide themselves...
So we banning everyone who uses a ultra-wide and is getting an unfair advantage?
And before anyone says on ultra-wide you lose a bit of vertical fov... Horizontal FOV is more valuable and gives more in-game information than vertical does.

Cherry picking a 3 year old tweet from before launch when they ended up never adding 120 FoV support for their own reasons. (Xbox One being able to run at such a setting considering this is an Xbox/Microsoft game more than likely and crossplay was one of their main targets with the game)
So we banning everyone who uses a ultra-wide and is getting an unfair advantage?
No, they are banning for editing a file. If you are playing on ultrawide without doing this you have nothing to worry about. This is honestly the easiest thing for them to check for just like 3rd party programs btw. Don't be surprised if someone reports you on suspicion and then a ban happens.
@kommodoreyenser You missed the point mate. I don't care if others use 120 FOV. I have not, but just think it's silly that people cry about 120 FOV when people have the exact same "advantage" whilst using an ultra-wide monitor...
Heck I think you actually see a lot more left and right with an ultrawide. Why aren't people kicking a fuss up about that?
For those that are editing the config file, that's up to them and only affects them. So why do others care?
Oh they care because it's seen as an unfair advantage. Something that is also natively supported by Rare with an ultra-wide :))))Can we please lock all these 120 FOV Posts, they keep popping up everywhere, and pretty sure you've made it clear NUMEROUS times it's never going to happen, and it's not allowed to edit game files for an advantage.

Even though it says it's not allowed in Microsoft's TOS. (sure they do not tell punishments for it)
mods like @Musicmee have already confirmed that people have been banned for it and @mferr11 went as far as to contacting SoT's support team to ask if it is and like you can see from post above they said it's ban-able.Although Rare does have a bit of a reputation for falsely banning players just because of spam reports.
I hate to agree with you on this one but it's something that has happened to every company at some point.

Please tell me more about how with 90 FoV setting stretched onto a 3440 monitor gives you more FoV?
As far as the rest of the world is aware, 90 FoV is just that, doesn't matter what resolution you put it on, you will still be looking through the same "window" as everyone else regardless of how stretched or squished it makes it from 3440 all the way down to 1080p. If you have some info to the contrary, lets see a pic of the screen and a SS of your settings menu.
@rabbitsshadow Its not cheating. 120 fov gives no one an advantage whatsoever. I don't use fov in fear of my account being banned but I've seen streamers who use it. It doesn't give them an advantage. My friend, who uses 120 fov, told me that the only reason he uses it is because he's claustrophobic and he didn't like 90 fov. He didn't do it to see his enemies better, he just did it because he felt uncomfortable with 90 fov. I honestly agree. I'm claustrophobic too, but I'm too afraid of my account being banned to do it. I honestly wish rare would just come out with 120 fov instead of banning people for modifying the game files.
It does give an Advantage as it OPENS UP your Peripheral vision in game. You can go back and forth from 60-90 and see a massive difference, so from 90-120 is even more. Regardless of anybody's opinion if you believe it or not, I do not care personally because it doesn't effect me..
The issue here that people are just not understanding is that you have to EDIT GAME FILES to get 120 which is against Microsoft TOS, which can get you Banned.
@kommodoreyenser That just isn't true at all. 21:9 (ultra-wide) 100% gives more FoV. Or at least in the sense of what you can see on the left or right side of the viewmodels. Which is literally what this "120 FoV exploit is doing".
My point is, people are playing freely with the same "unfair advantage" on an ultra-wide, but no one complains about them...Yes, I personally think it gives an advantage as you can see more information (if an enemy is further to the left or right when they would normally be out of frame).
However, I also understand that it feels a lot nicer to play with. Especially on PC due to being so close to your monitor compared to being sat far away on a console.
Here is what I see happening and what I think should happen:
Rare creates a way to block the config modification by setting limits or checking for the config value change. No bans take place, but it simply gets patched.
Epic Games (Fortnite) did the exact same thing. No one was ever banned, however they simply found a way to stop PC players being tempted to do it.Evening all...
Sorry, I let this thread go on far too long...
The official line is, modifying the games files in any way is strictly against the Microsoft Xbox Terms of Service and anyone found to be doing so may have action taken against their account.
Yes, buying a monitor that supports it does give you the same effect, but legally modifying the configuration files yourself is strictly against the terms laid out in black and white.
Until this is officially supported, modifying the file to do this is a no-no!
I hope this clears it up!
