Updates are stale...

  • I think we need more ways to interact with the world. I want updates that change the meta introducing new tools that can turn the tide of battle or speed up questing or just how the game is played overall. Updates like harpoon, rowboat, wicked barrels, emissary absolutely changed how questing and pvp was approached. This season stuff is alright I guess you get cosmetics but doesn’t fundamentally change the game season to season. If you look at a game like fortnite and the way it approaches seasons I think is much more powerful including map changes, as well as new tools at your disposal. Although people will think fortnite isn’t a fair comparison due to budget possibly. I think the season pass should have some premium cosmetics that you won’t be able to unlock after the season ends which would definitely be much more lucrative for the company and more desirable from consumer POV. I think this game should also go free to play.

  • I'm just gonna say wait until Season Two tomorrow. Although, you might argue back that you already know, you are an Insider. But then, Insider might be ruining the updates for you.

  • Using Fortnite as an example of how to improve this game is like recommending kryptonite on a diet plan for superman

The unique experience is why people are here. It's not for everyone but it's what keeps people around.

  • @wolfmanbush does it keep people around? I think SoT has some end game problems, although not really what my main pain point is. I think updates should introduce new gameplay mechanics to keep the game fresh.

I see it the other way around

I think constant pushing of content for casuals has sacrificed consistency

There is a lot of content and a lot of things to do. What we don't have are consistent servers. We don't have consistent content when it comes to performance.

Our big content addition was a voyage that has not properly functioned at a consistent rate literally the entire season.

Servers are laggy and buggy as all heck which greatly harms the competitive environment.

Content quality (outside of performance) imo is one of the best and most consistent parts of the game. They have great content.

Constant content keeps the gamepass tryouts high and the events keep activity flowing so it all looks good on paper but they still need the loyalists that stick with them through thick and thin to have some consistency on these servers so there is a backbone to the base

  • @wolfmanbush I see your point, I also realize that people play this game in different ways so the content may be incredible to some. You also are saying it’s fresh for people coming from game pass and enjoying it as a new player you’re absolutely right. I am no longer a new player and feel the game lacks meaningful changes for veteran players. Yes I do understand there fundamental server problems but I don’t think they remove the charm from the game. I would just like to approach the same goals in more ways. As I was saying the rowboat and harpoon did when they were introduced.

6 months ago they weren't as big of a deal
a year ago they weren't as big of a deal

I'd say within the last 6 months especially the last 3 or 4 the bugs/server consistency issues have been a real QoL issue for more and more people

It's not just high level competitive combat dealing with it anymore it's a lot of the base in general.

I think a lot of it is growing pains and will get better at least I hope so but at this moment in time I think it's a real patience tester out there

  • @starchyaunt495 Another thing about adding new content is new bugs.

  • Got to stop comparing games to other games.

Some can pull of such tactics while others can not.

  • @rockaceyt true, but doesn’t mean you shouldn’t update.

  • Firstly, there are many things to do. I assure you that if you just log in, with nothing planed to do, and just set sail, you will find yourself playing shanties with a bunch of other pirates while watching the sunset, or right in the middle of action, fighting two other ships, a skeleton fleet and a meg in a storm, or maybe discovering ancient, long - forgotten secrets while completing one of the Tall Tales.
Secondly, bugs. People will scream at the devs pretty much every update when they didn't magically fix each and every problem of the game, but will complain even MORE when an update is dedicated to bug fixes (remember the August Update?) and doesn't add new content. Now is not the time to completely revolutionize the combat system or anything like that. In my humble opinion, we must be patient for the devs (who are working from home) to fix the game, and then evolve it even more. I'd rather have a good game with the content it has now, than a completely unstable game with more content.
And my last point, more content could be easily overwhelming for new players, especially involving combat.
So now imagine an unstable, buggy game, with sooo much stuff you have to learn how to use that you feel just overwhelmed, but also don't want to waste your time playing a game where every other day you will lose a battle (and your loot) due to a simple glitch.
P.S.: This is just my opinion, and what I believe is good for the game. Have fun with the new Season, pirate!

This is the second time in 2 days, that I catch you replying without fully understanding the other party's concept. Strange, usually you write on-point replies. It looks almost as if you're in a rush to mandatory be the first one to reply.

@starchyaunt495 was very much correct to provide Fortnite as an example.

Fortnite started out being extremely poor in what it offers to the players. Not much else but plain woods on the map. Very few weapons. No vehicles. No grapple hooks. Basically nada, the game had almost no life in it. It was like an APLHA version of what Fortnite is today.

Can you think of any other games that also had the same development? OH! THAT'S RIGHT!! Sea of Thieves of course!! What SoT is today, has almost nothing to do with what it was Day1 of its official release.

OP's point was not about comparing games and experiences. He gave FN as a development example, and again, he was very much correct to do so. Because Fortnite are the absolute monsters when it comes to pumping content out. They understand that you can't only change the game visually, it has to change gameplay-wise as well. This is why with each consecutive season FN grew not only in cosmetics, but also in variety, mechanics and player experiences.

This is the exact same thing I discussed with many people around here when Season 1 landed and I stepped out and called it "underwhelming".

You can't slide in a bunch of cosmetics and call that content. No, that's just more cosmetics. It would be new content if you actually had to do new things to obtain these new cosmetics. But allas, it was just more cosmetics, which we obtain through the saaame old methods.

Or maybe it's time to pull our heads out of the bag, and read properly and with clear minds what others say! How about that huh?

Please read my comment above, it applies 101% to you as well.

  • @wolfmanbush

I think constant pushing of content for casuals has sacrificed consistency

Then I am sorry to inform you, but you think contradictory to our WHOLE WORLD!

Consistency is achieved through constant evolution, and by staying ahead of others. If your "logic" was remotely relevant to reality, then Microsoft wouldn't have the need to move past Windows 3.1, as that was considered 'top-of-the-top' back in the day. But guess what, had they done that, we wouldn't even know who they are/were in present days.

I just can't believe this Bushmen way of thinking! Of course we ourslves, as well as the game, must keep moving up and forward! Otherwise we'll end up... well... just where the Bushmens are now, ironically...

But this has NOTHING to do with the topic! The fact that Rare can't deal with their own bugs and server health, DOES NOT terminate the content drought of this game...

Content quality (outside of performance) imo is one of the best and most consistent parts of the game. They have great content.

    LMFTFY:
"Content quality (outside of performance) imo isWAS one of the best and most consistent parts of the game. They haveHAD great content."

After playing the same thing thousands of times, one changes his overal concept of "best" and "most" ...

Constant content keeps the gamepass tryouts high and the events keep activity flowing so it all looks good on paper but they still need the loyalists that stick with them through thick and thin to have some consistency on these servers so there is a backbone to the base

Again, Bushmen thinking. The backbone of this game isn't going to disappear because the game keeps evolving and introducing more and new fun stuff to do. At the very least, the "backbone" will grow even bigger this way.

I mean saying stuff like "we don't need more and new things to do" is just as equally absurd as saying "Fortnite had a horrible development strategy and execution".

  • @greengrimz Exactly! New skins are not content.

  • They are kinda stale ngl.

But I am still grateful for Rare that they brought in the stuff I have seen wished for a few times in the forum.
It could be just the wierd not necessarily epic feeling, random cosmetics I do not care about.
This "Lucky dude" stuff ( do not know the name in the english client ).

Looks so random to me. ^^

    • And I would have really liked 'v-shaped sails' with the current plunder-pass.

    Come on...
... write "bankrupt beggar" on them if I you need to, designer.
I do not care. I just want the functionality. ^_^

And I do not know when I will have farmed another 4 million gold to buy those edgelord-sails 'just for their shape' !!
