Bring back Overachiever Sails as unlock.

  • I already know many of the responses for this thread will be filled with “Don’t release exclusive and limited timed things” or “you had to be there.” This sail is kind of a one off, it’s not tied to an event of any kind.

Back in December 2018, seven achievements were changed to become easier to unlock. If you unlocked one of those seven before December 14, you would unlock the “Overachiever” sail. Now that Rare is releasing event cosmetics after the event, just tied to some tedious commendations, I think it is time to rerelease these sails tied to tedious achievements.

I propose that the sails unlock to anyone who gets every “vanilla” achievement in the game. Folks who earned the sail early by finishing one of those seven had it easy, while everyone else will need to do the grind of “Sailing 1000 nautical miles” for each of the trading companies.

That is truly being an overachiever. By unlocking all the achievements the game had to offer at the time.

Also, if you really want to increase the grind, include the “Legendary Hunter of the Sea of Thieves” achievement as a requirement.

Don’t lock the overachiever sails away only to people who unlocked 1 achievement during the time. Open it back up to everyone who REALLY wants to be an overachiever.

  • @hazerblade you kind of already know, you had to be there.

But they have made even doing all the achievements easy, the new quests complete faster than old ones. Also they are keeping old event cosmetics locked and just adding recolors.

  • Though there should definitely be more unlockable cosmetics tied to commendations, bringing back the Overachiever Sails would make them much less valuable.

For those who got it, they were extremely special, it was much tougher to complete all the commendations then.

I believe requiring to unlock every vanilla achievement would maintain the sails “value.” It shows dedication to the game. Someone who spent days, months, heck YEARS in this game. I would argue it would be MORE impressive to get the sails now than back in 2018.

Some of the vanilla achievements are sitting at a “.01% of gamers unlocked this achievement.” This game has been out for 3 years! You would imagine those achievements would have a higher unlocked percentage. Especially since Rare “made it easier with the new voyages.”

Let’s face it, the community gets too wrapped up in limited exclusives and “you had to be there” mentality. This Sail is not one of those. It’s not story driven like hungering deep or cursed sails. It wasn’t a special voyage like the mercenary voyages. It’s tied to the game’s achievements. Something EVERYONE earns throughout their time on the sea. Not a “you had to be there.”

Also, if I recall correctly, Rare had switched it from having to unlock ALL SEVEN of the changed achievements down to one because the community deemed it “too hard.” Rare rewarded those who were there at the time, but if you want to earn them now, you gotta do it all.

  • @hazerblade “everyone who had to unlock the original had it easy”

    You what mate ?

There was a limited amount of time to unlock one or multiple of the commendations/achievements that had plain and simple insane requirements to complete.

Your proposal is to give everyone an infinite of amount of time to complete all the vanilla commendations/achievements....
Which are all much less grindy or changed to be more accommodating....

And further more due to continued updates all of the original achievements have become easier and less grindy due to: alliances, increased loot values, emmisary system, more differentiation in voyages etc etc etc

This can be summed up as:

Limited time + high grind factor on some achievements/comms
    Or
Unlimited time + low grind factor on some more achievements/comms

The cosmetics coming from the latter is infinitely less valuable then the first

Answer is simply No, these where a landmark giveaway for people that put a heck of alot of time into the game in the first year and supported the game trough and trough.

Same for Year 1 pirate legends who got the golden PL livery.

Same for Day 1 patches, launch crew EOR’s

These things have value due to their scarcity and unavailability, the game is about cosmetics and only about that on a progression level (apart from narrative stuff)

    These unique cosmetics tell a story;

    “I was there”
    “I had to do this”
    Etc
    Etc
    Etc

  • I was there and I missed them by a mere 4 chests and 1 day because I was "crazy enough to do a Gilded Athena instead of a Gilded Gold Hoarder" prior to the end of the event. I was cheated out of something I should have had. For that incredibly selfish reason, I fully and wholeheartedly support the OP's request.

...and for the record, I have been playing nearly daily since closed alpha and still have yet to unlock all of the achievements. It is still quite the accomplishment. Personally, I think the OP's request is quite reasonable, and that the sails would still be quite Rare.

You missed the context of “easy” by having people who earn it now having to do all the grind achievements. Despite having “infinite” time to unlock them, why is it that they still have a low unlocked percentage?

“One” achievement at the time vs. “all achievements” is easier. The only people who had it rough were new players at the time. Most day one players were close to unlocking those achievements by December with the changes, just had to grind harder for a week or two. All the achievements is not a “grind for a week or two.” It’s months of grinding. Dedicating toward one achievement then switching to another.

Thing is, it celebrates the same “I was there.” They achieved the same achievements, if not MORE than some of the day one players.

This isn’t like a “1 year anniversary” event, where you log in and get the items. It’s similar to the “1 year pirate legend” but I would argue it’s more grind than that.

Despite it, I know it won’t happen. It is a cosmetic game after all, but I have all the limited time stuff. I am in the minority when it comes to having these exclusive cosmetics come back in some form for newer folks, just tied to more tedium.

  • @hazerblade Just a thought. Wouldn't a better compromise be a different set of overachiever sails for people who finish all the achievements? This would likely not upset those of us that have the overachiever sails and it would make those of us who have completed all the xbox achievements happy.

edit. I fall into both categories.

  • @captain-coel this would be a good idea, even it is was simply a green or so version of the old orange ones.

@Hazerblade the over achiever sails was of OVER achieving the new values, which cant be done anymore because the old values are... wel gone.

A different set of sails like Coel advised above would be best, reintroducing an old cosmetic for which the old requirement cant be achieved anymore will get quite a few people salty.

But you weren’t “overachieving” when to get them you just had to unlock the achievement by that date. True, the folks that had more than what the minimum was had to turn in 1 more of whatever the achievement called for. I do concede that it is a valid argument for those who had WAY more than the new value for “Overachieving.” However, getting all achievements is also “overachieving.”

A new colored sail would be nice. I do like what Rare is doing with events now. You can always earn the new stuff with commendations after the fact, such as the Fate of Souls and Frostbite sets.

  • @galactic-geek I'm having a hard time figuring out how you were cheated.

Exclusive cosmetics should stay exclusive or they're not exclusive, pretty simple. The only cosmetics I bother to use are the time-limited ones i've got because they're unique.

  • @blackbeard-lufy I was cheated because Athena voyages get you more, or better, stuff. But in this case, it didn't give me enough of the right stuff.

  • @galactic-geek So why didn't you just go get 4 more chests elsewhere?

  • @blackbeard-lufy Because I didn't realize I was that close until the event was over. There also wasn't as much loot back then.

  • @galactic-geek 4 chests was still quite easy to come by 'back then'. I feel for your loss, but I stand by exclusives staying exclusive. I'd be salty as the seas if they started giving away my sexy black dog stuff. It devalues it and makes it less 'cool' imo.

  • I sure your not aware but the missions had to found on random islands. You could barely find them.

Those that I did find I Turned in.

Right now the crate of wood missions from messages in the bottle I’m 48 out of 50 I still haven’t completed. I spend voyages just finding messages in the bottles. One day I had 3 pages of messages in the bottle and not one wood crate mission was found.

I can see a rerelease of the sails in a different color but not the original.

I missed The devils roar release due to work missed the whole six weeks I’m not crying about the figurehead I missed. I’m disappointed I couldn’t participate but that’s life. The game has choices for us. You decide to do it or not.

  • No way. The requirements to get those was insane. That would be completely unfair to the people that earned them year 1
