We must save the Sea of Thieves!

  • It’s a niche game, you love it or you find it incomprehensibly boring. I don’t, for example, recommend it to people who are more FPS/Battle Royale motivated. I’m hoping this year brings additional features, rather than rehashing of content whilst shoving cosmetics that don’t typically motivate me down my throat. I know nothing about development, but this game has not changed in any substantial way since the inclusion of emissaries.

  • @needsmokes said:

To be fair, most of that list should of been introduced into the game at launch considering the price tag the game had.

Tell that to Microsoft, who likely forced Rare to release early in order to boost their mid-year numbers.

Um, Seasonal progression? It helps you feel a sense of accomplishment in a much shorter span of time, so you can feel good about shorter sessions instead of struggling with hours of progress you might potentially lose.

  • i have never written a review before and i , sadly, won't for Sea of Thieves. The reason why is because the way i see and feel the game may be totally experienced differently by a New Pirate...

You see , my fear would be that i would write a review filled with all the wonderful times i have had for years with this game but... Now that most Pirates are , and stay silent as gravestones , my Pleasure and Fun is reduced to my interactions of my own crew and what the AI of the game offers us...

A second , even bigger fear , is that i would try to persuade people to pay their money down and they walk into their first game into a bunch of Pirates that ruthlessly spawncamp these Pirates while uttering verbal sewercontent to them...

This is a game that is filled to it's neck with very experienced Pirates , With Pirates who shoot faster than my shadow and won't grant one chance towards the newcomer who will experience the game as harder than run faceforward into a brick wall.

i would rather try to setup somekind of "initiation" towards New Pirates , just as the Old and Forgotten Code once ordered us " The Old will Guide the New Ones " or something along that line...

i would rather form somekind of first sailing experience where New Pirates can learn how to sail , with some tips and tricks , press them on their Hearts to keep an eye , at all time , towards the Horizon and teach them that working in team and together will lead to more fortune , then dropping anchor or loot in the Sea because they have no clue what to do in this game...

This game has grown so much that any new Pirate that has followed your Good , and by no doubt Well Meant Reviews ,but they will drown by the amount of new things they have to swallow and mostly , and sadly ,on their own , in a Solo Sloop Maiden Experience that may lead to a bitter dissapointment...

Yes , i know , i can read LFG's on Xbox and search for New Players , but some lie and try to make you ridiculous in their sad stream...

Instead of giving away Empty , Meaningless titles , Rare better should try to create a band of Patient and Guiding Pirates who would love to take New Players under their wings to teach them the Basics of this Game , that would be much better than a review that is written about all the Wonderful , and filled with truth, Adventures that one truely can have in this game , while leaving the negative Adventures out...

A review on a Game that can either reach Heavenly Heights sometimes , by those who you encounter on the Sea and have interactions with , while for the same coin you can have a horrible evening filled with persons who take their game far too serious and use verbal abuse or spawn and cheats like no tomorrow . Such kind of review is very difficult to write in order to motivate others to buy ...

It would be better to guide New Pirates on their first Seamiles and teach them with kind intents and prepare them for what possibly can come from over the Horizon.

  • So you want to hide the fact that people payed for this game n it was trash? you cant cover up the fact they released a dud with the most toxic community ever.. at least now it got something to do before you get spawn killed

The Sea isn't perfect (What game is?), but it's far from being garbage. It wasn't a dud either; it was novel in its implementation. Barebones, it certainly was, but not anymore. As for the community, most are not toxic at all; they're just playing their game. For example, spawn-killing is a legitimate tactic to ensure loot and/or supplies are stolen or to ensure that you can't prevent your ship from sinking. Don't want to be spawn-killed? Then learn how to guard your ladders!

  • @galactic-geek No.

    Elaborate.

Literally the least "toxic" community I've ever encountered while gaming.

Mainly because the forums are heavily moderated when it comes to insults and the game is designed in such a way that you hardly ever see anyone in adventure mode.

If SOT is most anything when it comes to community it's the most guilty of confusing acceptable gameplay with toxic behavior

    As far as quality goes.
The quality of the experience relies on the personality of the pirate. Have an imagination? know how to take a loss? know how to make a positive out of a negative? have perseverance? Enjoy immense amount of freedom while pirating? this is the game for them

  • @galactic-geek I don't take orders from forum kids. Word.

It wasn't an order, and I'm not a kid. I do teach them, though. Fin.

I don’t even recognise SoT anymore as the game I originally fell in love with.

When I first joined the community, I had such severe social anxiety issues I was all but petrified to engage In conversations on the forums. I lurked for weeks before I built up the courage to make an account and try my luck as an alpha tester.

It was the community what pushed me into it. Never had I met such caring and compassionate people who wanted to uplift people and share in grand adventures and shenanigans.
Gameplay skills or efficiency at sailing meant nothing.

But now, or at least my last experiences with the game, it seemed it just became corporate.
The higher ups seemed more interested in Stream views and money.

The old community slowly dwindled and faded into obscurity due to lack of engagement. The toxicity in the game went unaddressed and the overall experience just got diluted and merged into literally every other game out there:

“Streamer views, battle passes and store items”

It’s a shame, but no matter what I will always remember all the good times!

Those times when it didn’t matter if you was good or bad all that mattered was having fun!

When it didn’t matter if you had a known stream or not you could make your mark on the world and be immortalised in it.

When you could sail side by side with the developers, and share in there passion for the game.
    And so so much more!

Actually writing about it now makes me so grateful I was able to be apart of it all back then. It really is a shame how it all turned out.

Remember when they said SoT was going to be the friendliest game ever... xD hard to write that without laughing now.

We will have to sail at some point George, in memory for what was. 🍻

  • I find it a little frustrating that IGN re-reviewed Sea of Thieves in 2020 one month before they added the amazing emissary system. (The score wasn’t bad though) I just hope if they do so again this year, that they wait until after season 2 is out.
But IGN’s Xbox team appears to have all but forgotten the game. They didn’t even include it in their 25 best Xbox games. They ranked a bunch of cross platforms over it. Such a shame.

  • @galactic-geek I suspect this thread has become rife with trolls, who are all dumping on a game that they clearly care enough about to be on the forum of. I wish people felt more comfortable expressing their wants and desires for the game without needing to pair them with sarcasm and bitterness. As if those qualities are more likely to get their desired reaction from the developers, than basic politeness. The game is in a fun state right now, and I’m excited to see what it can become next.

  • @knifelife That former community of nice-minded pirates is still there. It's just harder to find with the influx of newer pirates. Also, I don't see the additions of the Emporium, Seasons, and other financial aspects as a negative. They have helped grow both the game and community. And yes, along with growth come the bad apples too, but it's important to understand the differences between what's actually toxic and what's just being #BeMorePirate. I find that a lot of sailors upon the Sea take things far too personally.

There's a reason for that - they're biased in favor of Sony's platform, and have been for years. I would probably be too, if Sony paid me off. It's the sole reason that I stopped reading their content.

If given a platform, people will provide their opinion and ideas. Sadly, this also means that those who are emotionally frought are more likely to speak out, or an idea that is not completely well thought out will be shared. I have seen it time and time again in multiple online forums and communities. They start off meaning well, but then the negative toxicity drives out many folks, leaving the once-great community a former shell of what it once was, if not removed altogether.

A bit dark, I admit, but that's what happens when good people do nothing in light of such things.

  • the day they fix hit reg and bring back six ship servers.. and I'll give them a high review... not until then...

I meant no disrespect to the current community, I probably worded my issues wrong.
Maybe I’m just stuck in a nostalgia loop like one of those old men always going on about the “Good ole days” haha

I guess what I meant is, for me personally it just seems like the game lost its essence. The direction changed and while that’s what some people wanted. It didn’t align with my hopes and expectations.
But you can’t please everyone in gaming.

@mostexpendable When you ask people to review a game which has a troubled launch and failed to meet the hype it generated there will be people who will disagree and share there grievances.

    That’s doesn’t make them trolls..

yes only trolls can be trolls lol

  • @treefittymonsta Your profile says you've made 2.1 thousand posts in the forum of this game. But you clearly don't think the developers have made something worthy of a good review? Come on, dude? Bitterness isn't the only way to make a point.

  • @knifelife Look I think asking for a review is a bit much too. But the bitterness displayed by people who are here because they clearly enjoy the game. I shall change my phrasing. Not trolls. Sooks. Yep - sooks.

This reply confuses me if I’m being honest.
(I never was the sharpest sword in the shop)

Couldn’t you elaborate a little more please? :)

@combatxkitty Let’s not forget about: Smite and Overwatch. I honestly never knew what true toxicity was until I played them! xD

Also what happened to tagging people around here? Is my phone broke or something?
