Feedback to developers on Devils Roar from a Solo Slooper.

  • It feels like a Russian Roullette where half the revolver is loaded instead of one bullet.

What happened. Was just trying to do Merchants, but some Brig would sink me, when I had no treasure or anything worth taking, even asked them not to, because why waste resources on me?
Anyway they did (wish I had my crew ) So I decided to go to devils roar for some solo slooping fun.

I am nowhere on the level of really hard core players, but I am not a noob neither (Modest 100hours atm +-), especially when it comes to aiming and already got the hang of other things too. (level 50 horders, 45 Souls)

As soon as I reach Devils Roar (4skelly quest). I probably died 15 times trying to fight them and the RNG World. My ship sank twice if I recall correctly, cought fire 4 times. Spent almost all of the resources repairing.
And of course the volcano only becomes active when you get there. So I also somehow lost 2 skulls as they were nowhere to be found, when they steam geyser killed them for me.

I understand that Devils Roar is meant to be harder, but not impossible please.

I always wondered why nobody plays there and especially seasoned players. This is why dear Developers, it feels like everything is desingned to work against you all the time.

Imo - Keep it as it is, maybe even make it a bit harder, but then drastically increase the rewards for quests there and I mean by a lot, so the risks would be worth it.

Otherwise, tone it down a bit as it doesn't make much sense imo.

Pirates of the Devils Roar, do you have any tips for when hell breaks loose out there?

Sorry for the Rent, but thought to share in hopes of making this experience better.

  • @zig-zag-ltu ashen loot is worth double the value of its normal counterpart. Solo = hard mode, devils roar is almost as you admitted meant to be hard, combining this just makes it extra difficult/annoying.

    • as far as tips go, use rowboats to get to islands and then you can always mermaid back to your unanchored boat.
    • stock up before hand
    • bring a friend(s)
    • when on the island always have a bucket of non boiling water
    • if you go solo, when the island starts to shake be ready to leave rather than waiting to see if its an eruption or not. you will slowly learn what kinda time you have and can take more and more risks as you get comfortable.
  • @captain-coel

ashen loot is worth double - should be like 4x given the difficulty ^^ or even more

as far as tips go, use rowboats to get to islands and then you can always mermaid back to your unanchored boat. - Those Volcanos shoot quite far, do you acctually do that yourself? I was thinking about it, then thought I am not rowing for 15 minutes and back. ^^ This sounds like a chore more than a video game, and given this is not a PVE, and you can get ganked by people who will sink an empty ship, does not seem like a smart thing to do either (but yeah i get it, nobody playes Devils roar for probably the reasons I wrote earlier)

stock up before hand - Always mate!

bring a friend(s) - Nobody could play at that time, and they have played this game a bit longer than me, but they had enough of Devils Roar for same reasons too, we do it together twice a month at most.

when on the island always have a bucket of non boiling water - Good tip, thank you, haven't thought about it before, but this would not have helped me much on that instance.

if you go solo, when the island starts to shake be ready to leave rather than waiting to see if its an eruption or not. you will slowly learn what kinda time you have and can take more and more risks as you get comfortable. - This seems to be the only option, but then the double loot will become less worth than normal one.

I understand that everything has a workaround, especially if you have all the time in the world.

But Imo if Devils Roar received some Love from the Devs, it would be a lot more populated and people like me could only complain about getting ganked by other crews rather than RNG Jesus.

  • @zig-zag-ltu they have already made the roar easier twice. I honestly think the area is too easy and the loot value is fine because gold becomes pointless eventually.

if its too hard for you I would suggest not soloing there.

  • @captain-coel No, I like a challange, but don't think they balanced it properly yet. Do you perhaps know any streamers who do it often so I could steal with eyes from them? Or any developers trying their creation ^^?

But please don't tell me that when you do go there, you see other ships?
And it's the newest update this game has, even the title screen has that theme. Yet nobody is there.

I understand what you mean as well bro, not trying to complain as much as it seems, just to point out that this is an area only for really experienced pirates. Who usually don't go there as they find other things more fun and rewarding. So very few pirates ever really go there. An area of this size, should be catered for more people.

But then again, this is experience from London,UK where day time I play with EU/Asia - nightime east coast US and another region I can't remember right now mostly. (most likely)

P.S. This does not happen every time, I have solo slooped there many times and usually can handle the RNG pretty well. But sometimes all hell breaks loose and I litterally felt powerless, but did not want to back down.

Thanks for replying to my post :) would love to hear more opinions.

  • @zig-zag-ltu

@Captain-Coel pretty much covered the basics of threading the waters there.

If you believe that the DR is hard now... you should have seen it when it came out. Shooting homing missiles instead of volcano debris was what volcanoes were.

It is a bit more difficult, but not impossible. Practice and get a feel for it, the roar has it's own pace to it.

  • @zig-zag-ltu I very rarely see other ships in the roar. but thats true for most of the world given the servers are capped at 6 ships.

I don't know any streamers that go to the roar, but I don't watch streamers, I'd rather be playing.

If as you put it "all hell breaks loose" and you can survive, is that a bad thing? last time I sank to pve was a volcano, kraken, meg, and skelly sloop. my buddy and I still laugh at the 50-70k we lost.

I like the idea that a threat or threat combo can still provide a challenge. All of the individual pve threats are pretty easy, even enemies such as skeleton lords or ashen lords are more spongy than difficult.

My advice is to let it occasionally beat you up, makes beating it all the sweeter.

  • @captain-coel @CotU42 Thank you, Gents! Definetley helps to approach it with a different mindset. Maybe if I get a full Ashen set, it will help me to make peace with the Vulcanoes xD.

If I could suggest one thing that I think would make sense to implement, without ruining the difficulty setting for more experienced players is to make Volcanoes errupt at Midnight everyday as those lands are cursed(game time) (not sure how this would affect FPS for people)
And to compensate that tiny bit of danger lost, by spawning more skelletons or more stormy weather. So at the end things would be just as hard for a noob.
Maybe it is balanced right at the moment. But it feels like this, with more randomness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiUX7gnEb_w ^^

Anyways, Thank you for being patient with me and for your tips, will fire up my sloop shortly and set sail to get some Ashen treasures.

  • @zig-zag-ltu that is once every 24 minutes, thats still easier than before and even with increased skeletons it still sounds like a nerf. It makes it very predictable and that just sounds easy.
