Compass-pacing should be introduced in the tutorial

  • Mostly as the title says, but as a relatively new player it took me far too long before I figured out how to hold the compass out to count paces when required. Since tutorial island already has you finding a "treasure chest", it would be sensible to include either a popup when you first open your compass (Like the basic tutorial popup that the fishing rod starts) or a simple puzzle within tutorial island teaching you how to use your compass to count paces.

A lot of the other interactions in the game (grabbing flames from your lantern, lighting beacons, building fires) are explained through the interaction prompts, while unless I missed it nothing in-game explains how to use the compass to count paces.

  • There are a lot, A LOT! of things the game doesn’t tell you but either discover or figure out by other means.

Expansion of the Maiden Voyage is well needed.

  • It could be added as a loading screen tip, too.

  • This is 1 of those things that, I kid you not, took me MONTHS to figure out after I started sailing. When I did, my mind was 🤯.

  • @jayteacakes over one and a half year after launch we had NO tutorial whatsoever...we had to figure out EVERYTHING on our own
People are so lazy to find things out on theyr own these days...

  • @schwammlgott

Doesn't mean it shouldn't be covered. It's not that rewarding to discover basic features of the game through trial and error.

This is honestly a small problem with how the game is tutorialized. Lots of stuff vital to playing this game isn't even hinted at. Simple stuff like raising a lantern had me running to the wiki to figure out when I first started playing. I simply never considered that pressing m2 was an option in the first place. Honestly I thought you just had to take it out.

I wouldn't have needed to be babied and hand held but a simple "pressing mouse 2 let's you use some equipment to its fullest. Count steps, raise a glass, or show a crewmate something interesting" would have been awesome to see during the Maiden Voyage.

  • @jayteacakes I agree, I think I accidentally stumbled on it in a YouTube video and it blew my mind!

Having a mini tutorial pop up when you first select that equipment (as your rightly point out, it does with the fishing rod) would be the best solution for this I feel.

@Schwammlgott this is a small QoL update to the game to help newer players. 2 years ago when I started playing, everyone was in the same boat (see what I did there....) about knowing how to use different equipment etc. We're now 2 years down the line, the game has grown massively so newer players have so much more to learn all at once, much more than we did (we learnt as they released the features). I really don't see what harm this would do.

  • i think there are too many things like this to include in the tutorial mission. imo, the tutorial fulfils its task of laying out the basics. i reckon anything more would start to overwhelm a newbie with 'tips and tricks' and have a negative impact on lesson retention. if not, why not include dummy sails? animation-cancelling? anchor-turns? loot-sprinting? sword-charging? coloured lamps? how about some basic naval combat tactics? where does it end? some things are just best left to be learnt on the seas.

i do agree with @Awyrlas that some sort of invitation to explore secondary functions on various equipments would go a long way.

  • @Awyrlas The real question is why didn't you ever try pressing m2, especially with it being such a prominent input?

  • @galactic-geek

I just never thought about it at the time. I thought simply taking out my lantern was enough and that the riddle was just using flowery language. I spent a lot more time thinking I was in the wrong place or had read something wrong than I did thinking I needed to use another input.

It's also not obvious that the lantern would have a secondary input like the guns or sword. Turning it on and off with M1 seemed to be the most interactivity I was going to get out of it.

It's the same reason why it took me till at least the last week or two to discover counting paces despite playing almost daily for over a month now. It's just not an obvious use for the compass. Despite being referenced several times in universe it just sounded like flowery language for tapping the 'W' key several times or counting seconds until I got to the spot I needed to dig at.

  • @awyrlas Well, welcome to seasoned pirate status, I guess... 😅

  • Half the fun is figuring all of this out for yourself.

  • @galactic-geek

In just under 100 hours too! I should try speedrunning. 🤣

    @vin-delanos

The nuances of the game, sure. But the equipment basics? No one feels good finding out about that stuff two dozen sessions in. New players shouldn't have to rely entirely on word of mouth to learn how to count paces with their compass.

Now that's not to say the devs need to treat the players like they're stupid. They don't need to be hand fed this sort of stuff, but even just a little direction goes a long way.
