Portable Harpoon/Grappling Hook

  • Hello there pirates!

Today I randomly came up with an idea that could be pretty cool.

My idea, is a portable Harpoon/Grappling Hook. This will be a new weapon just like the Cutlasses and guns. So you can either have a Grappling Hook and a Cutlass, or a Grappling Hook and a gun.

    Features of the Grappling Hook:

    • This new weapon can be equipped in one of the two weapon slots.
    • The range of this weapon is shorter than the Harpoon on your ship. (Probably half of the range)
    • Using this weapon on loot will cause the loot to come towards you.
    • Using this weapon on an enemy player, causes the player to come towards you and deals 25 damage.
    • Using this weapon on a Skeleton deals 25 damage to the skeleton.
    • Using this weapon on a solid surface, causes the user to move towards the surface that is grappled.
    • The weapon has a reload time of 4.0 seconds after each shot, to prepare it for the next use.

    Something worth checking:

    • Can't this weapon be used to cheat on Tall Tales. I think most of the Tall Tales are safe, except for dungeon-like Tales like the Shores of Gold and Heart of Fire. But most of the rooms are already blocked of so you can't jump out of the area etc.

What this weapon can also be used for:

    • This weapon can be used in an unique way for future Tall Tales or Quests and can open up some new gameplay experiences.

What if we don't want this to be a standard weapon like the guns/cutlass?

    • This weapon can be obtained through a challenging way, and once obtained, can be used for this play session and/or sold to the Merchant for 5,000-8,000 Gold.

I think this new weapon can be used in really interesting ways and I am looking forward to hear what you think about this idea!

  • This isn't Legend of Zelda. I don't think we need Pirates using personal grappling guns to zip around everywhere.

  • @blam320 I like the guys thinking though. A new weapon in the game would be refreshing and it'd be interesting to see how it would play out on combat. :) also I don't mean for this to sound sassy but the Legend Of Zelda didn't invent grapple hooks :P

I'm aware of that but it's one of the better-known examples.

I'd prefer some slightly more historically accurate weapons to round out our selection options, like a boarding axe.

  • @blam320 a boarding axe is a decent idea. Game balance wise maybe it could have a longer swing time but deals a lot of damage. :)

  • I like the idea of making it an emergent gameplay item rather than a basic weapon.

  • Imagine this, but in SoT:

It's all bit much, so no thanks.

  • @galactic-geek The idea of the Weapon wasn't to swing around mountains and swing everywhere you want, but just like with the loot, it'll just release once you get to the point. So no swinging, but can be used to get up to a higher platform. Also, the range is nothing like in the first video XD

  • YES, YES, AND YES!!!

I totally love your idea! With one very small exception:

All I read over here is "blablablabllblablbabllalba" . Just give me my hand harpoon for boarding already!!!

I did giggle! But he include a 4sec reload cooldown though, so no swinging for you mister!

It's still broken. Getting onto high rocks or ledges where sword and blunder and bombs can't easily reach you? Or how about boarding? We wouldn't need ladders anymore!

    No thanks.

  • Eliminate the "pulls you to target" part completely, and maybe make it so it stuns another player and pulls them a few steps toward you instead of pulling them all the way to you. Make this a tool to retrieve loot that gets stuck halfway down a cliff when you tried to drop it to the beach below. It would be way too effective to board ships and shortcut tall tales, but pulling something OFF a ship should be fair play.

Since the range isn't as far as the Harpoon, half of it, the pulling the target to you really isn't that bad, because it most likely is only up to 8 steps. The range is enough to get to the second floor in a fort for example.

Yeah, for the loot it would be awesome. For both loot that got stuck, or getting the loot out of the water.

I think most Tall Tales are safe, maybe the Trickster, Shores of Gold and Heart of Fire have some spaces that need to be closed of.

Boarding also isn't that bad. If you want to grapple onto the ship, you need to be above it, so you could jump or dash as well. If you want to harpoon from out of the water, you only get 1 chance to board, because of the reloading time. And once you are on board, you can only have 1 other weapon, so you could be taken down pretty easily. And maybe you can get a short stun time after using the hook, just like after dashing. :D
