number of cannons is disproportionate

  • Number of cannons on galleon: 4 and max number of players 4
Number of cannons on brig: 2 and max number of players 3
Number of cannons on sloop: 1 and max number of players 2

Why is the galleon the only ship where the number of cannons matches the number of players on the ship? Sloop should have 2 cannons and brig 3 cannons. It would raise the skill ceiling by making multi-tasking more prevalent and beneficial.

  • @jmiller1314 Eh, your numbers are off.
    Cannons/players
    Galleon: 8/4
    Brig 4/3
    Sloop 2/2

    The numbers are balanced.

  • @supersnipper60 Yeah, I was about to say the same thing, but you beat me to it!

    Math - it's useful!

  • @supersnipper60
no? Theres a max of 4 players on a galleon and 3 on a brig. Is this a troll?

  • @jmiller1314 What do you mean "is this a troll." There are four players max to a gally and three players max to a brig.

  • @SuperSnipper60 nvm, what I meant was increase the amount of cannons on each side of the ship

  • @supersnipper60 The number of cannons on each side of the ship is disproportionate to the number of players on a ship, that’s why I only referred to the cannons on one side of the ship.

  • @jmiller1314 So a duo crew should use 2 cannons? What about repairs, or steering, or sails.

  • I don't think that the amount of cannons should be raised on sloop or brig, but rather the galleon should lose one cannon per side. It doesn't seem right that only one out of three ship types has the ability to have its full crew on one set of cannons.

  • @supersnipper60 read my original post where I stated that it would raise the skill ceiling by increasing multi-tasking. No one said that you have to use both cannons on one side of a sloop if you’re not good enough.

  • Hey there @jmiller1314,

the difference in numbers of cannons on the Galleon (in relation to it's crew size) compared to the numbers of cannons on the Brigantine and Sloop most likely stems from changes that were made during the development cycle of the game.

If you take a look at the Sea of Thieves E3 Announce Trailer from 2015 you'll notice that the size of the Galleon crew was at one point 5 players instead of 4.

That number was most likely reduced for balancing reasons and from the data the team gathered regarding crew dynamics and such.
What didn't change was the existing aesthetics of the Galleon.
That's why the Galleon still has 8 cannons with only 4 crew members while the later developed Sloop and Brigantine had their numbers already adjusted to their respective crew sizes.

Stuff changes during development, that's all there is to it.

  • Great feedback, @thor-von-blitz!

@jmiller1314 Another way to look at it is that each ship has its own strengths - the sloop has manueverability, and the brig has speed, for example. The advantage the galleon has, though, is firepower - so with that in mind, it makes absolute sense that they'd have the extra cannon per side.

  • @jmiller1314

You got reality foreign people here thinking the Brig and sloop, especially the sloop will become an extreme monster with just one more cannon on each side.
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/116899/sloop-suggestion-cannons-and-sails
They are all naive and don't know what they are talking about.

I saw a few days ago how a Galleon was safed from 3 ballast balls while it had many holes on the upper deck but the crew reacted coordinated and I could not believe how the Galleon was safed even from that.

Even though this is what people say is the sloops sole strenght.
" Coming back from near annihilation. "

Those people truly want to say
" I cannot coordinate with more than just one person and because I personally feel stronger on a sloop as on a Galleon, because of this the sloop is strong enough. "
Do not listen to them. They have no clue what they are talking about.

Oh wow... an anti-fun suggestion. (-_-)

Did not expected to ever such a thing here.
Pretty disappointing. Galleons are boring enough as it is for me.
Do not take a cannon from them it would make this fat, sluggish whale even more boring.

  • ...Last I checked,
    Sloop has 2 cannons.
    Brig has 4 cannons
    Galleon has 8 cannons.
One cannon for each player, on one side of the ship.

  • Full things flawed when you don’t know how many cannons are actually on the galleon tho...you think there is 4 cannons on a galleon? 😄

  • @odyssee-mit-tee So because people do not agree with your idea, they do not know what they are talking about? Great logic there champ

  • Sloop is easy to manouver, it is already the strongest ship in the game imo (also my favourite), if it had 1 more cannon per side it would just be OP. As I said it easy to manouver and you just need 1 player doing it, that player could always go to the cannon and have double the firepower without losing too much since he can quickly go back and adjust the wheel or the sails when he wants.
On the other hand Galleon has 4 cannons but it requires all the player to manouver the ship efficiently, this means that even if it has 4 cannons per side it will mostly be 2-3 people on cannons while 1 is steering and 1 may be repairing if the situation is bad, having 4 cannons per side becomes usefull only once your Galleon is in a good position.

How long will you play the dunce? 😄
And not mention you know he just meant one side? 😄

  • @odyssee-mit-tee you’re cute. Keep trying. You will get there

  • This would of been play tested to death before release.
    Same for barrel placements etc.

    Its all for balance.

Plus why would you need more than 4 cannons on any given side when there is 4 players max?
