What are RARE's next gen console plans for sea of thieves?

  • We all know later this year the new console is being released...
They just did a game reveal the other day and one of them showcased was one called Call of the Sea.
This looked like a next gen sea of thieves almost, and got me wondering....
What are the long long long term plans for this franchise? Does rare have any plans to massively overhaul the game for next gen? Or will the next gen console release finally be what ends up killing the game as people will move on to the latest and greatest and leave this game behind? I would hate to see a game i have put so much time in fade away for not keeping up with next gen tech.

  • They'll likely maintain updates with bilge rat type voyages and the occasional big update with a new feature until they are ready to announce Sea of Thieve 2: Electric Boogaloo.

The next console is going to be able to run this game still so they aren't really forced into a new release right away.

  • @shuoink Have been wondering the exact same thing. What happens when December hits...

  • @d3adst1ck yeah i get they can keep the game alive for awhile after the next gen release. the problem is people will quit playing, the fan base will largely move on to whatever next gen looking pirate type game comes out and leave this one in the dust. its almost making me want to stop playing now. i dont want to keep putting time into this if come december it metaphorically dissapears. guess well see

  • @shuoink It's on PC, coming to Steam soon, and games on PC can have long lifespans with minimal support. TF2 is over a decade old, rarely gets updated, and still has people playing it and spending money in the marketplace.

  • what i am really saying is i sure hope there is a long term plan to move this over to next gen with some serious upgrades, otherwise yes it will end up fading away over time, at least for me personally

  • Rare are filling a gap for content for Microsoft Studios, as is Undead Labs with their free updates, whilst the rest of the studios are all working on new games for next gen..
Without these two studios, there would be very little content from any of the Microsoft studio's teams in pre next gen 2020.
Both studios were once very vocal about NOT WANTING to do monthly updates.. But now they have too it would seem.
And once next gen drops, and new games surface, Rare will be more than likely be much more focused on their projects as they need to deliver new games roughly every 3-4 years.
This game will probably be on steam by then and might stay alive a while if it is popular there. But I personally don't see it being too popular on Xbox by 2021.
Looking at what has dropped on Gamepass in the last few months, it's probably sliding down the Xbox charts now too, more so once the world lifts from lock down.

Looking to the future now, and what Everwild will bring from Rare.

  • There will probably be a port at some point, but the steam release, as well as some other signs from the developers, show Rare as desperately trying to break free of Microsoft's control, which is a good thing because (insert opinion here), blah blah blah, we all know why.
