Spanish translation is wrong - Crook's Hollow Riddle

  • Had a treasure Hunt riddle at Crook's Hollow where we were tasked (by the translation) to find battling scarabs, which are nowhere to be found.

I dug in the battling crabs just because i'm experienced and i know the translation is wrong many times.

I'm not asking you to hire more translators, nor to double-check all of your riddles, i ask again if you would add a setting on the options menu to swap my language ingame to English.

    Thanks,
    Captain gmorata

  • Spanish is a pretty common language. It is disappointing that there are so many instances in the game of poor translation that you know to be wary of it.

  • @ghostpaw

There's misleading stuff like Ashen Guardians and Key Masters not being translated yet their loot is (Cofre / llave Cinérea).

The most annoying one would be island names, with no consistency at all, for example:
1- "Puesto de avanzada de Sanctuary" [could translate full name -Santuario-]
2- Crow's Nest Fortress [could be Fuerte de la cofa] vs. Fuerte de los Condenados/Fortaleza Arenas Abrasadoras [which are the only forts translated]
3- Seaposts being mostly translated vs devil's roars ones being in english. [Puesto comercial La Excelencia vs Brian's Bazaar/Roaring Traders]

There's more instances like the aforementioned riddles and some "Text-Commands Wheel" which aren't translated . . .

    Kind regards,
    Captain gmorata

  • I have been reporting a lot of spanish text problems using tickets since more than one year.

The one you are talking, the "fighting beetles" that it is a clue of a gold hoarder quest. I reported it 2 times.

As you can see, they didn't care.

  • @guepard4

I know they can't fix everything instantly.

Yet giving an option to allow swapping on settings / before loading in would be amazing, seen it on most games, even for really old ones.

Youths learning second languages would also be very thankful for it im pretty sure.

Instantly? I reported it more than 1 year ago. It's just change one word. ONE SINGLE WORD. "escarabajos" to "cangrejos"

  • @Guepard4
If it was another language with a more active playerbase [French/Portuguese/etc] (I've only met less than 5 spanish pirates on my adventures so far!) they'd fix it quickly.

The thing is we (Spain) are a minority on Xbox/Pc-Xbox, yet I believe their service is really popular in South America because of the low prices and gamepass…

There's no big spanish streamer who plays the game either, so visibility on such issues is low.
We don't even know the name for a spanish community manager...

Hope to see you on the seas someday!
    Kind multilingual regards,
    Captain gmorata

  • The thing is, text is very easy to replace. And Spanish is a very common language. If there are not many Spanish speaking players then it may be because the game doesn’t make sense when played in Spanish. I can’t imagine how frustrating it would be, spending a lot of time trying to work out a riddle, then learning you would have solved it quickly if they had only used the correct words. I can overlook a lot of issues, but these things are important. Professional translators are not hard to find.

  • Many such mistakes, for example "El Oso" in Thieves Haven.
Still, the best way to report it is with the feedback ticket.

  • @quietrobot
Thanks for the link, even if they take 2 years to check it, they'll probably do after many complaints!

Yet I made the post to ask for the option to change languages because I learnt plenty of english accents & slang through videogames… I'm even starting to learn japanese through some games/music I bought in Japan when I made a tour there.

The one time I got an official response on the forum about this they suggested changing my whole computer's language to "fix" it, yet I don't believe that is something we should be required to do.

Rare is a big studio yet this has been an issue since Banjo & Kazooe: Nuts and bolts or even older games.

    Kind regards,
    Captain gmorata

  • If it just a simple word that's the issue, they should be able to change it rather quickly.

  • @gmorata Yes, sometimes I do that, at least in W10 it is much simpler to change the language (settings - time and language).
If anyone is interested we have a group on telegram / discord (affiliate alliance).

  • As a Spanish player myself I find that there is no point in literally translating the island names. They would get silly names and would ruin the communication if you ever find a foreign player and want to tell them somewhere to go.

The game might have some minor translation failures but as I said, they are not a huge problem. They might need to fix some issues like the Crook's Hollow riddle you said, but the rest is fine for me.

By the way, I think there is an option to change the in game language on the Xbox game settings (not the game settings). I will edit the answer if I find it cause I am not sure at all and can't look for it atm.

  • @gmorata there are actually 2 fighting krabs in the southwest beach on a rock...

Yes he said that, but in Spanish the riddle states 'fighting scarabs/beetles'

So they just changed the species...that's handable, there are far worse translation fails in the game

  • @schwammlgott

I was just pointing out some of the translation issues to make my point clearer…
Yet again you have mistaken the intent of the claim I've made.

We want an option on the menu (maybe before loading the game at all) to swap languages. I'd love to play in English, French or Japanese as those are all secondary languages I've been able to learn. It's pretty obvius that I want Spanish mistakes ironed out too but most importantly I'm talking about the educational value videogames have for secondary languages.

I've met some Finnish pirate (14y.o.) who was starting to learn Spanish and would love to try the game in our language too…

I even had -Pirate(English)- set up as my Facebook language for a really long time. 11/10 would recommend.

    @Capt-Pilotes
You're right about the confusing aspect when trying to tell islands with a multilangual crew, yet I was trying to point out that there is no rule when it comes to translation between updates on the game. The newest content got translated yet the old ones aren't.
Reaper's Hideout in Spanish is El escondite de la parca but for example when you hold a gift and use the quick-text-wheel it gets translated to any language for everyone onboard.

    Kind regards,
    Captain gmorata.

  • @gmorata would make things easier to translate, if you play, for example, the english version and see what they really meant...

But I guess you can change it to another language. Problem is, you have to change the whole system to that language...at least on XBox it should work that way

  • @schwammlgott

I can double check with a quick Google search for the english version

I wouldn't mind having an Xbox set up in english (in which I'm fluent), yet my computer is also for work and I like having it in my first language (who would have known huh?).

When you change the XBox language in the main settings, every game should be in english, or whatever language you want, but I guess you have to restart the console after the change, so it doesn't work mid-game

  • @schwammlgott
I play on PC as stated in the quote you made...
