Game Crash at Rare Screen at launch......help

  • @the1andonlylily If you try to start the game again after it crashed, does it open the window again?

I'd like to know because in my case it doesn't. I've opened another thread (https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/113969/error-couldn-t-start-a-dcom-server-game-doesn-t-start) because I believe the problem I (or we) have is different, given we don't have any of the Sonic programs.

  • @burning36 It opens again for me usually, sometimes for longer than others. It will open for only half of a second sometimes, and other times the window will be open for around 3 seconds. It seems to vary for some reason. But it still always crashes on the splash screen, and I didn't have this issue until I updated the game.

  • @burning36 Fixed it! Had the same probleme for 2 Days and did everything even deleted Sonic Radar.

But after the Deletion via the App & Features there was still stuff left on my PC from those programs.

Go into the Search bar, Type "services" look for "Nahimic Service" - Right Click - Properties and deactivate it. Restart PC and see if that helps!

  • @theshjami I can confirm that I also did this and it worked.
Go to Task Manager, Processes, Nahimic Services, and end ALL Nahimic tasks (for me there were 5, 1x Nahimic Services, 2x NahimicSvc32, 2x NahimicSvc64). This fixed it for me.

To prevent this issue from occurring each time you reboot your PC:
Go to Task Manager, Services, find Nahimic Service, right-click and click Open Services, find Nahimic Service, right-click and open Properties, and in the Startup type menu select Disabled, click Apply and OK.

I truly hope this fixes everyone's issues. I have been struggling with it for 2 days and finally found a fix. Good luck to everyone! (Also worth mentioning that I have uninstalled Sonic Radar and Studio)

  • @theshjami That's very kind of you to mention me. I've looked through everything: Apps & Features, processes, in the services list, but there's no Nahimic and no Sonic, even looked through it manually.

I'll try to find out what Nahimic and Sonic are. I believe they are audio drivers or something. Maybe one of my audio drivers disrupt Sea of Thieves the same way Nahimic/Sonic do. I have little knowledge of those so I'm kind of stepping in the dark here.

  • @burning36 Let me know if you have any luck, I'm going to keep looking for solutions as well

  • @rarecsm Hey, I'm having a similar problem. My game starts and sits on the screen that has the skull and says "Sea of Thieves" but then after around 3 minutes crashes. I've reinstalled the game 3 times, updated my windows, all my drivers, and rebooted my pc 8 times. I'm not sure what to do.

  • @mau5robinson thanks mate

  • @ziggystardus828 Worked for ya?

  • @mau5robinson yes it did ! thanks a million !!!

  • @theshjami It's saying that I can't stop the service for some reason.

  • Came to this forum to find help for this issue. Uninstalling Sonic Studio 3 immediately fixed the problem for me! Thank you!!!

  • @theshjami MAN!! You are a life saver, and this totally worked. After right at a week of not having access, I am good to go. Sincerely thank you!

  • @burning36 I reinstalled it and it launched but the graphics are broken

  • @the1andonlylily I'm glad you got the game to work again. I have good news too, I solved my problem as well. Maybe we should sail together to celebrate. :D

For anyone who still can't launch the game, I described my solution here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/113969/error-couldn-t-start-a-dcom-server-game-doesn-t-start/2

Short version: It seems like the latest update changed Sea of Thieves install path to disk C, but in my case, all the game files are on disk D. I solved the issue by moving Sea of Thieves install path back to where the game files are, using the "Apps & Features" application. The link above describes how to do that more detailed.

  • @theshjami thank you! this worked for me.
I didnt uninstalled Sonic Radar on disabled the "Nahimic Service", restarted and the game finally worked.

This was after trying eveything here: https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115015775927-Sea-of-Thieves-not-Launching

and reinstalling the game 3 times (which is painful on Australian Internet).

Also worth noting that Sonic Radar did update around 3 days ago when the problem started.

    Thanks, Zac

  • Hi - wondering if anyone can help because i've exhausted so many options at this point..

    Here's what's happening..

The game won't launch. We arrive at the first sea of thieves black screen with skull and then it closes after a few seconds. However, VERY rarely (1/50 attempts to launch) it loads through rare screens even the intro video and gets to "enlisting pirates" then immediately crashes afterwards.

THINGS ALREADY TRIED (credit to @burning36 for most of this list, i've added other methods tried too):
    Updated Windows
reinstalled SoT to C drive several times
Moved file from C to alternative drive via apps and features in case file locations/install path had messed up somehow
    reinstalled SoT to alternative drive
    wsreset.exe
app reset of Sea of Thieves
    a lot of computer reboots
in services.msc, set Plug & Play to automatic start in properties
change region and language to USA and English (USA)
downloaded a random free app from the Microsoft store
try launching SoT from Desktop & Microsoft Storeu
    unticked/ticked automatic timezone recognition, rebooted
    updated NVIDIA graphics driver
    disabled NVIDIA Geforce overlay
    disabled "Gaming" mode
disabled game bar to record videos, screenshots etc
disabled "record in the background" option
    executed some powershell commands
no such program as a Sonic Radar or Studio installed on my computer
no such Nahimic files on computer that could be conflicting
Checked no security software might be conflicting
Checked no conflicts with MSI Afterburner/Readyboost
Checked no other microsoft accounts logged to the same computer/made sure to local account also

Any further ideas or suggestions very welcome as you can see I've tried a lot of options & pretty sure this is not all of them too although most I can remember

    Thanks,
    Millie

  • @parma4891 I just want to confirm that I am having this Exact same issue. I have exhausted all these lists as well as talking with microsoft in case it was an issue with the store (which is horrendous). I did a full, clean reinstall of windows and got the game running, until I wanted to use the computer for anything else. Updates, drives etc.

Checking and unchecking "Set time automatically" and then immediately rebooting my pc, then launching SoT does take me past the splash however crashing once loading begins. Says some file is missing. And of course, there's no reasonable method to repair these properly like with Steam games for example.

It's a real downer. Absolutely love the game however, would really love to see some more activity from devs to establish what's going on here. A lot of folks really struggling with this error.

  • @vc-rang3r - I've sent off files via email requested by the support team so i'll let you know if we hear back from them with solutions/fix

    best,
    parma4891

  • @parma4891 So after my third fresh install of windows SoT is now working consistently.

I did NOT install the optional windows update KB4550945 this time round. Can you let me know if you had installed this?

Also, what antivirus and firewall are you using?

  • @vc-rang3r I haven't installed that optional windows update. I have ZoneAlarm & malware bytes but have tried fresh install of SoT with both of those disabled and still no luck.

  • For me worked UNINSTALL antivirus (Zone Alarm). Disable AV or give game to whitelist was not working.
