Meta Critic 67. (Wow)

  • I knew this game was bad but 67? That's very bad for a first party studio review. This could be the end of rare. How long can M$ support a studio that outputs games like this.
On a plus note. Skull and Bones looks promising. We should find out more at E3.
Glad I got it free with game pass.

  • @sg-riverdan Meh I dont really care for those reviews. As the reviewers have obviously not had a chance to get to the higher tiers of the game.
Now to be fair there has been some server load issues and they should be dinged for that, they are owned by a corporation that has the largest cloud infrastructure on this planet and Microsoft should have answered and added some more virtual servers from Azure quick fast (and maybe they did). But I dont really agree with the one bad review it got in that pool of 6 on metacritic.
And how long MS will support them depends on revenues generated, and I think RARESOFT has done just fine in that arena.

and this game is pretty awesome, how long it maintains its community will depend on what RARE does going forth, but other then not jumping right on that game server issue I think this is one of the smoothest online only game releases I have ever seen.

  • They have a point. The game is pretty bare bones at the moment. MS pushed out a game that anywhere else would have been branded as Early Access, or at the very most Alpha, and made people pay full price for it. I thought the content in the Beta was just a tiny portion of the total, you know, for testing purposes. But nope, that was basically all of it.

  • Glad I got it free with game pass.

    This.

Do we really need to start another debate over what the game's actual goal and content is supposed to be? Because RARE has made it plenty clear.

It doesn't matter what their plan is when their pirate game launches at full price and has a grand total of two ships. It's not okay to launch without content, even if you say "Don't worry, we'll add more down the line." Creating content should be done BEFORE the game launches, not after.

  • Well I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I dont really find the game to be bare b***d myself. I have played many other games that have less features and content that I have also enjoyed. I paid full price for this game (twice. once for me and another for a friend who is down in luck on his coins) and I dont have any regrets about it. RARE was pretty clear about what was in the game from the start if you watched any of their communication. If folks wanna be angry about that, I guess that a choice they have to make. I have already logged about 20 or so great hours with the title even if you account for having to buy 2 copies, thats still only 6 bucks an hour, and I am nowhere near done. When I am finally finished I think my investment will be pennies on the hour, and that my friend is cheap entertainment.

  • People honestly love to complain. They want all games to be perfect. I have had very little time with the game, but the 2 hours I spent playing yesterday were a ton of fun. If you get a good group going, then it’s definitely an enjoyable experience. Have off work tomorrow, so I will definitely be spending more time playing the game, can’t wait!

  • Microsoft banked on increasing their gamepass subscriptions because of this game. I am willing to bet they have a significantly lower subscription number, because of SoT.
I keep my Gamepass because this game showed promise. I just cancelled my subscription. I am sure I will not be the only gamer to do so.

  • @sg-riverdan sums it up https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2018/03/21/xbox-ones-sea-of-thieves-is-no-more-than-10-of-a-finished-game/#13fbd1e26beb

i love the game but he does have some valid points

  • @sg-riverdan isn’t skull and bones an arena combat style game? Lol hard pass.

What is there to do besides pvp and grinding? Visit an island and what, stand on it for a while and look at how empty it is?

    Quests with unique gameplay.
    Enemies with unique mechanics
    Unique cosmetics
    Unique weapons
    Unique ships
    Just for a few

See there's b****r all content, and what is there is often just copy pasted to make it appear that there is more.

Now what usually happens at this point is that people start going on about either
    A) use your imaginaaaaaation
    Or
    B) it's only just released/beta/alpha

To address a) you aren't talking about content, you're talking about potential fun and that's there for sure.
Nobody is complaining about that (even though it's heavily dependent upon multiplayer with bros)

    To b)
Great, so 90% of the game is locked behind legendary status?
Well I've been fooled by the same claims during alpha/beta. Why the hell would anyone believe that all the content is present but locked, and isn't just gonna be another recolour of the four existing cosmetics?

I know Dice and Cards have been requested, and they might be added further down the line.

Grab a few gunpowder barrels and kamikaze into another ship. Find someone to have a race with! Try befriending another crew and share a drink and a shanty.

  • @sg-riverdan Why on earth would you think that? They had almost a million new subscribers to that service because of this game, lets say just 10% or hell even 5% keep those subscriptions to play some of the other titles offered.....that is 1 mil a month if 10% keep and half a mil a month for 5%.
I think Microsoft knows exactly what they are doing. they have always made great coin from xbox live and their other subscription offering, thats kind of the model of the new Microsoft under Nadella-services instead of static stuff, and its been working pretty well for them.
But I could be wrong, millions of people may in fact log into this site or Metacritic or whatever and cancel that gamepass because they read your post or some other bad review. Or you could be absolutely delusional.
Only time will reveal the horrid truth.

I'm certainly imagining all the fun I'm going to have in Sea of Thieves when I purchase it!

I had a great time with my friends when I played in the Final Beta; two of them were literally laughing their rears off the entire voyage as we dodged trigger-happy galleons and dug up buried treasure, while drinking and serenading whoever was at the helm.

I almost feel sorry for you, unable to make your own fun.

  • Obviously the game needs more content, but I'm enjoying it.

Being that I'm a big pirate fan - this fills the hole left by "Black Flag".

I do wish they had chosen to set this in the Caribbean as opposed to some mythical location, but that's not the end of the world for me.

Skull-and-Bones looks nice, but it's essentially an arena combat game. Even with my love of piracy, that has extremely limited appeal to me.

  • @sg-riverdan I feel this is why there are so many server issues. Rare knew what kind of numbers to have their servers ready for. There was no telling how many people would use their free pass to play this game, just so happens Microsoft gave a free pass to basically everyone.

  • Skull and Bones looks good but you can't leave your ship, it's strickly ship combat based. There's too many y haters out there Sea of Thieves is awesome!!! Ba ba ba ba ba, I'm loving it!

  • Sorry, not a lemming that lets others decide whether or not I will like a game. I can think for myself thanks. Love the game.

    Why even have quests?
Why not just imagine you're doing them?

    That's just it!

It's a framework that you build off of yourself. RARE gave us the tools, and it's up to us to use them however we want. You don't even need to do the quests; you can just run around the world exploring and picking up random chests if you want to. Or you can be straight PvP-only and hunt down other pirates for the thrill of it.

If all you see is a few quests, of course it's going to get repetitive and feel lacking, since that's all you're focusing on. You're not trying to make it fun as you go.

If you seriously can't have fun yourself without the game holding your hand the entire way, clearly you spent too much of your childhood free time in front of whatever gaming platform you use.

  • A lot of the reviews I have read have been pretty spot on. Tons of potential but did not capitalize on it out of the gates.

  • @janusgod you have a very limited imagination.

Me and this crew of people I had never met before just finished doing a skeleton fort and were all in good spirits after cashing it all in, then we saw this random Scooner and started chasing it in our galleon.

I had the blue lantern equipped which gave me a hilarious idea. I went to the front of the ship and kept toggling my own lantern and one of the ship's lanterns in an alternating pattern to simulate police lights, and when we got close enough we went "WEE WOO WEE WOO WEE WOO THIS IS THE POLICE! PULL OVER AND STOP YOUR VESSEL NOW!!" and when we finally got him to stop, we went over to him and said it was dangerous to sail without his lights on, so we were giving him a ticket, which he proceeded to pay us with a castaway chest. We were all laughing pretty hard, both crews, at the whole thing because of how ridiculous it all was.

You've forgotten how to make your own fun. You've forgotten the satisfaction of discovering things without the game straight up telling you directly. And that's a damn shame.

  • Counter strike had a measly two objectives, plant bomb, disarm bomb. Was it fun? Hell yeah!

People have different tastes, coz some critic gave poor score means nothing, that's just his opinion. I tried on gamepass and will definitely purchase full. 9/10

  • Skull and bones looks horrible and it’s made by Ubisoft whose horrible

  • They should've not released this game yet without more content. Imo.

    This what happens. :c

  • Although I think it’s very much deserving of of a low review score. I do think the reviews should revisit the game a year down the line. Fingers crossed we’re still going strong.

For what it’s worth, my experience on SoT’s last night was a 10/10 game. But not everyone will have the same experience and I may never again tbh. Potentially a great game with a lack of fun and variety.

  • @janusgod Yeah microsoft made you pay full price for the game. Sucks when they log into my live account and purchase a game for me without my permission.
