[Ranking / Statistics] What statistics will we be able to see & how will they lead us to Legendary status?

  • Perhaps I have not stumbled upon the answer to my question because I did not search well enough, yet still I think there are many questions here that need to be answered.

How exactly can I set myself apart to become a Legend FIRST! What must I do and or/not do to assure my chance at getting those famous sails with ghosts flying through them?

It has been clarified that they want to give everyone a fair chance or "equal ground", but there will always be things that set us apart.... such as that one person who has insanely positive K/D ratio, or the one who never engages combat but manages to make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. Different play styles should have different rewards, different titles, different levels of punishment or reward in the road to attaining Legendary status.

    REAL TALK:
What statistics will the game keep track of?
    Player Kills / Deaths?
Enemy Ships sunk / Personal Ships Lost
Will they give credit for ship sinking to everyone in the party or the last person who placed the last hole in their ship?

The moment I learned about"Legendary" status, I promised myself & my friends that I would watch every single video, learn every single navigation/sailing trick and lead them efficiently enough to become famously known as The Unsinkable Captain Dardeus of The Elusive Raven. Not the Deadly, not the Ruthless, but "The Unsinkable".
I have seen firsthand that under the right leadership, the right crew can accomplish amazing things together. The key and essence of teamwork is in the synergy that is created through collaborative efforts. This game is pretty darn good at rewarding those kinds of collaborative efforts , and if you add strong and efficient leadership to the mix - there is nothing you & your crew can't do.
In a scenario where you have a ship going through a storm with 15x Captain Chests, and two galleons on their tail , if you want to survive you gotta work together like pros and trust in each other, trust in the captain, but trust in every single member to do their own part. This is what I am looking forward to most in this game, testing the synergy I can accomplish with my friends, testing my capacity to lead, and doing it in such a way that we never lose our own ship, never lose our loot. Perhaps we don't get too many kills, perhaps we get a cowardly rep... but the kind of legend I want to be at first is one that legit, never loses. In order to do that, I need stats, I need lots of stats. To understand, to learn, and to improve. I'm not asking for the in-depth level of PUBG and other games on the market today, but definitely a few layers...and as of right now, it seems like the only "Competitive Statistic" or unit of measurement we can identify is the amount of Faction Reputation we have accumulated and the clothes that set us apart.

TL/DR: I want to know what statistics this game is going to keep track of, what statistics will be displayed in leaderboards, and which statistics outside of Faction Reputation will lead us to Legend Status. The goal I have... the route I'm thinking of taking is one where I'll be playing the game in such a way that we never lose our ship. Perhaps we keep a high Death to Kills ratio as individual crew members, however the ship never goes down. I want to see that reflected somewhere.

As far as we know, the game won't be keeping track of any of those statistics. They're more likely to do overarching statistics, like the one we've seen from the closed beta/alpha, that sum up what everyone has been doing.

From what they've divulged, it seems that legendary pirate status won't have to do with killing/sinking the most players/ships but rather with the reputation you build up with the trading companies. And then somewhere along the way, you stumble upon something that starts you on the journey to become "Legend". It doesn't seem, or was said, to have anything to do with statistics.

But, we simply don't know yet so these are all just educated guesses.

Sea of Thieves isn't about statistics. It's exactly as you say: Sea of Thieves is about your reputation with factions, the clothes on your back, the titles we'll be able to earn and the reputation you've built for yourself.

It isn't about competitive statistics, as Rare believes this would only lead to negative behaviour. This is also why they won't include leaderboards, as they believe it would also lead to negative behaviour. Negative behaviour as in people demeaning others for their position on a virtual leaderboard or for their stats. Rather than just enjoying the game Sea of Thieves, it then becomes about your stats and how to bump up your numbers. Not their intention.

If you want to improve your combat skill, my suggestion is to just do it a lot. Try different things, practice it often, and just build experience with combat. That will help more than any statistic ever could, in my experience.

    Hope that answers your question(s).

Thank you for your answer. In many ways it does answer my question, in others not so much. There should always be some series of statistics that the game keeps track of, or at least something the player can see themselves (even if it isnt public for all). I understand the focal point of the game is in the fun, however - Faction Rep cant be the only unit of measurement in this game.... that just seems like a really bad idea.

  • @dardojs89 eh I feel different. SoT is striving away from the whole COD/ranking/stats "I'm better than ye" mentality. Toxicity in online gaming is a big problem these days and even in SoT it exists and it isn't out yet. If there were ANY stats it would be best to be private.

Stats tears a game community apart as people will look for those numbers to try and validate their worthiness in crews etc. You'll have folk asking what your k/d rate is or whatever metric the game will use to try and place you into the world. I can only see bad coming from it.

  • The person who owns the most cosmetic improvement items will be classed as a legend.

  • @rooby-dooby-dew I can understand the mentality that it leads to toxicity, but I know for a lot of players, it's just a personal objective to strive for. Some of us play spread sheet simulators for fun :D

voyages is [y] rank. I'd be happy enough with knowing I've accomplished [x] voyahes and [y] player kills or whatever

The aim is to build reputation with the Trading Companies which will lead you on the journey to becoming a Legendary Pirate and also Athena's Fortune -

    BECOMING A LEGEND
Every Trading Company is unique, as are the opportunities they offer. On one voyage you may be asked to acquire merchant cargo and safeguard it through perilous waters, while another will see you intent on hunting hostiles to claim a bounty. As their names become famed and their status ever more celebrated, well-practised pirates tend to set their sights on an even greater goal: tracking down the fabled Athena's Fortune!

  • @katttruewalker Yeah, but you have to see that having a better hat is so important to some.

  • @davejc64 Different people have different motivations, for myself I play for fun and find it uniquely refreshing that there's a level playing field for all, all the time.

I don't have to worry about my ship being the best and most powerful on the seas, I don't have to fret that I'm missing out on max level because I just don't have the time and it means half the game is locked off to me because of that.
I don't have to fear being sniped by the pirate who no life's the game and has the bis gear or most powerful weapons, or even disadvantaged because I'm a new pirate in a world full of experienced ones.

I can jump in whenever I want to, hunt a little gold, buy some items, gain some reputation and enjoy the sailing and company of friends in a beautiful world.

  • @katttruewalker Again, that's all fair, but surely there's no harm in displaying just basic counters of only your own information? Again, some of us get enjoyment out of spreadsheet simulator type mechanics (4x games, jrpgs, etc) and just get a sense of achievement from watching that number tick up.

EDIT It's worth mentioning I'm not advocating for legend statust o be tied to these stats, I'd just like to see them somewhere

  • @paul-endri I can well understand that, but personally, I don't think it's in keeping with the type of game Rare are creating here. We know there will be achievements however, just perhaps not the fps type stats we're used to seeing in some games.

  • @katttruewalker You missed the importance of being able to spawn kill should the opportunity arise.

  • @davejc64 Other possible non pvp statistics:

    • Distance sailed
    • Fastest speed achieved
    • voyages completed
    • world chests found
    • Islands explored
    • Items Acquired
    • Map % travelled
    • Total Gold Acquired
    • Total Gold Spent
    • Voyages abadoned
    • Pints of Grog drank
    • Shanties played
    • Most people involved in a shanty
    • longest concurrent crew
    • Longest up time
  • @dardojs89 To become a pirate legend will probably be a criteria youll be told about in the full game when it comes out, maybe like a checklist of some sort, jsut speculating. For now we are all in the dark about it

Did see a video where it was mentioned that in taverns (the legend one specifically) theyll be posters that get updated with achievements of certain players. Maybe who has the most kills, collected the most tressure that week and such, Be cool anyway.
