Mysterious crazy incident/battle, cheat, mod, poorly rendered/loadgame mechanics, What's your take? (long story)

  • Hi Casual, merchant alliance sloop player here. Playing on/off since SoT came out.
So Usually I'm playing solo for the complex experience, playing with emisary status, and sometimes when i feel like it a good amount of cargo on board.
I'm used to be hunted, I'm used to defend and sometimes seek revenge when sunk and killed. I've been in a fair share of ruffles and have seen my share of tactics, tricks, polite players, evil nasty players and crazy behavior.
However yesterday I experienced 2 inccidents (same gameplay session, same server). I've never encounted before, they maybe seperate or related.

    Incident 1.
So early on my voyages I've encountered a legendary pirate ship (sloop) with the standard skin, nothing unusual there, of course he spotted me and started to chase me (standard again), I started to evade (standard) However in the EXTREMELY VERY short time he was in firing range he landed two perfect shots on my captatains wheel, we are talking far far away in a semi disturbed ocean, me evading with a range of maneuvers. He stopped the chase after a while.
I've been shot at a billion times but this was soooo accurate pinpoint, it just seemed so out of place. what do you guys think, skill, aimbot, what?

Incident 2 the crazy weird one.
After a while ingame I became emisary lvl 5, super juicy target, even worse alot of juicy loot and cargo, my guess i around the 80-150k mark. So naturally I set course for a somewhat safe outpost, Sanctuary was the choice I landed on due to the player activity. No reapers present on the map and everything seemed fine on the recon sweep in the waters around Sanctuary outpost.
As I aproached the dock a horific sight came into the rendering distance ,ALOT of cargo/treasure (several ships worth)in the water at the dock, and a mermaid.
Of course I cancelled the plan to dock and offload my prescious cargo at Sanctuary Outpost. Full speed ahead with full sails, suddenly I spotted a rowboat in the water (single player), Evaded him easily. after some distance had been placed between me and the outpost I checked the waters for enemy ships (no one in sight) I also checked for stowaways, all clear.
I put the ship at stand still fully raised sails and scouted the horizon (D4 near Sandy Shallows). Nothing there. I decided a new course a pass by at Golden Sands Outpost if safe dock otherwise Plunder outpost.
I Set full sail, Checked for stowaways and the horizon for enemy ships (all clear). Suddenly Out of nowhere and I do mean out of nowhere a Yellow Galleon popped up (extremely close). Almost like an instant apearance/loading of the ship.
It seemed unmanned (completely empty), not even a captain at the wheel, at first I thought NPC ship, but this one was off, there was holes in the sails but the sails were stiff. It fired upon me, So I unloaded my cannon all hits, It was so close I succesfully landed 4 throws easily with 3 firebombs and a single blunder bomb.
No effect at all, no fire, nothing, nada. even though they were clear hits. no reaction to the damage the cannon shots have caused from the ship.
I was extremely busy, sailing maneuvering, shooting, reparing.
In the last step of the fight I got shot off my ship. I thought I'll just mermaid back and hopefully save my ship, suddenly i Got killed with a swift saber stab out of nowhere by none other than that the rowbow guy (or atleast same skin) from sanctuary outpost, however no rowboat to see, It felt like he could see me thorugh the waves easily.
I spawned back in at Sanctuary outpost (now no loot in the water at the dock)..... ohh swift revenge I thought. I sailed out to where my ship and the enemy (enemies?) would have been. Nothing, Nada, all clear not a trace. No ship on the horizon, Islands or else, calm as before the storm began. I even checked every single island in the battle area (C5,6,7 and D5,6,7) and some more in the surounding area (Square area from B4 to H11.) No ships, players or activities. nothing.
I've spent the time looking through pictures of ship costumization but haven't found one that matched the yellow weirdness of the ship.

I have not once experienced something like this i SoT, I've been chased, shot to the extremes before by other players and npc's (all hail the sudden 3 galleon npc challenge :-P)
But this just stuck out like a sore thumb, everything just seemed off.
I have no idea what kind of crazyness this was, but I was HEAVYLY Outmatched on all fronts, usually I at least make a dent.
Have any out there encountered something similar?
Is it some sort of badly loaded/rendered emisary challenge, I don't know about?
Somehow I can't stop thinking if the pirate from incident 1 was the same as incident 2.

  • Nothing out of the ordinary here. Thinking that hitting a long range cannon shot is some kind of cheat is a clear indication that you have a heavy bias towards calling something a cheat without erring on the side of the other player just being skillful or lucky, so the rest of your story is littered with the same bias.

Without seeing video, I doubt there is anything funny going on in either of your stories.

  • In the first scenario you describe a ship that is a good distance away. The player loses control of the shot once they fire. That means anything that changes your ship’s position (maneuvers, waves, etc.) cannot be accounted for after they fire the cannon. Basically, if you did any maneuvering while the balls were in flight (“we are talking far far away in a semi disturbed ocean, me evading with a range of maneuvers”), then you unknowingly moved to ensure the balls struck your helm. It sounds like it was combination of skill plus luck. No aimbotting indicated here.

  • @ghostpaw Excellent this is what I'm looking for an answer. Thank you.

  • in an environment that has some players that are very skilled, servers that are very inconsistent, and a lot of good and bad luck between I always just avoid assuming cheating because of it so rarely being provable and there being so many possibilities outside of cheating

that doesn't mean there isn't cheating I just find it pretty pointless and bitter to accuse people of it without there being clear evidence and there is very rarely clear evidence from your side of the battle.

Some people are just more skilled and having a bunch of extra people against a solo isn't exactly hard to look impressive because of all the extra bodies.

  • @wolfmanbush Thank you for your answer, server inconsistency would explain incident 2 as well.
I'm not accusing, sorry if it came off as such, just looking for answers, when I'm playing on/off the game changes alot bewteen my active gaming streaks. For all I know an aim assist could have been added to the game.
Thank you again for your answer.

  • It's possible the second issue you had was a ship exiting a tall tale.

  • @ajm123 Thank you for your answer :-) That would explain the ship coming out of nowhere :-) Just my luck :-P :-D

  • One question, did you have a rowboat on your ship?
I don't see any evidence of cheating happening in your story. The first incident sounds like what @Ghostpaw said, skill plus luck, the second part sounds like maybe a npc galleon and the possibility you had a tucker. Some of those guys are really good and are skilled at using your own rowboat against you. That might not be the answer to what happened, but it's the best I can come up with other than it was a series of unfortunate events for you.

  • @pollyoliverperk

I did not have a rowboat onboard due to the fear of tuckers :-)
But it seems you are right with a series of unfortunate events for me, I'm starting to realize, I'm sort of a master of running into those. It seems I was unlucky with my locations, routes, opponents and possibly some server funkyness to help it along.
Tipping the scale way off in the wrong direction for me :-P :-/
Thank you for your answer :-)

  • The cloud Event that looks like a ship... that one spawns in a ship with yellow sails if I am correct. Have only done it once with a sloop months ago... not a good idea 😅
    I could be wrong...

  • @madman-neebee I really appreciate how open you are to alternate possibilities. So many come here 100% certain they know what occurred and get upset when others offer different interpretations. Thank you for being open-minded and for being so considerate. Cheers! I am glad you are here with us.

  • @lordplinde That Is also a possiblity, and with my luck it would not be unlikely :-P :-)
Thank you for your answer :-)

    Yeah thats right... Applause 👏

  • @ghostpaw Thank you so much :-) In my world you have to stay open minded you never know when you encounter something you don't understand or might have an wrong angle to, only way to learn is to chew on every explanation until the truth is uncovered.
It would seem like I'm really good at finding these situations or series of unfortunate events.
Thank you for your balistics answer and this reply :-)
    Cheers! Raises Tankard :-)
